Official cast photograph

A genuine 1988 cast photograph exists, but I have not found evidence that CBS formally labelled it “Season 16.” It is nevertheless the closest period-appropriate ensemble photograph available.

Main storylines

Victor, Nikki, Leanna and Ruthless

Jack secretly encourages Leanna Love to write Ruthless: The Victor Newman Story, an exposé designed to destroy Victor. Leanna includes intimate details about Victor’s relationship with Ashley and Ashley’s abortion. Victor initially blames Nikki for the scandal and hurriedly obtains what he believes is a divorce.

Victor takes Leanna to Las Vegas and marries her in October 1988. The marriage is later declared invalid because Victor and Nikki’s divorce was never legally completed. The revelation does not immediately end Victor and Leanna’s relationship, but Victor eventually discovers Leanna’s involvement with Jack and her responsibility for Ruthless. (Jackson Dynasty)

The battle for Jabot

Victor retaliates against Jack for his role in the publication of Ruthless. He manoeuvres himself into control of Jabot, removes Jack from power and places Brad Carlton above him in the company hierarchy.

The corporate warfare intensifies the longstanding Newman–Abbott rivalry and leaves John caught between protecting the family company and dealing with Jack’s increasingly reckless schemes.

Brad’s kidnapping and Traci’s miscarriage

Brad’s former wife Lisa Mansfield returns and attempts to reclaim him. After Brad rejects her offer of a new life in Chicago, Lisa drugs him and imprisons him in a cage inside an isolated mountain cabin.

Believing Brad has abandoned her, a pregnant Traci suffers a miscarriage and turns to Tim Sullivan for comfort. Lauren eventually traces Lisa to the cabin, only to be imprisoned alongside Brad. Jack follows Lauren and rescues them before Lisa can kill them with gas. Lisa disappears on March 3, 1989. (Wikipedia)

Nina, Phillip and baby Chance

Jill and Katherine remain united in their determination to keep Nina away from Phillip. They question the paternity of her baby, offer her money to leave Genoa City and employ Chase Benson to seduce her.

Nina refuses to abandon her son. When baby Phillip—later known as Chance—becomes seriously ill, Phillip supports Nina and gradually begins to see her differently. Their eventual romance and marriage belong principally to Season 17.

Jessica Blair’s AIDS storyline

Christine’s estranged mother, Jessica Blair, arrives in Genoa City and reveals that she is living with AIDS. Initially, Jessica keeps her illness secret from Christine and John Abbott, with whom she falls in love.

She is treated by Dr. Scott Grainger. The story also begins uncovering Jessica’s past relationship with Scott’s father, Jim Grainger, and the eventual revelation that Scott and Christine are half-siblings. Jessica’s illness and family reunion continue into Season 17. (Wikipedia)

Ashley and Steven

Ashley marries psychiatrist Steven Lassiter after moving away from Victor. Leanna, one of Steven’s former patients, remains dangerously obsessed with him and hostile toward Ashley.

The marriage ends tragically when Steven is shot by the disturbed son of one of his patients. Steven dies on December 2, 1988, leaving Ashley widowed. (Wikipedia)

Paul and Cassandra

Paul falls in love with mysterious interior designer Cassandra Hall. He is stunned to discover that she is married to his wealthy client, George Rawlins.

George, who is unable to father a child, asks Paul to impregnate Cassandra. The arrangement produces an emotionally charged triangle involving love, money, deceit and George’s increasing suspicions. George’s murder and Paul’s prosecution occur after the end of Season 16.

Births

  • Nicholas Christian Newman — born on screen December 31, 1988, to Victor and Nikki Newman. His birth year was subsequently revised several times as the character was aged. (Fandom)
  • Phillip Robert Chancellor IV, later called Chance — born on screen March 15, 1988, to Nina Webster and Phillip Chancellor III. His birth technically occurred during the closing days of Season 15, although many yearly retrospectives group it with the 1988–89 stories. (Fandom)

Recasts and SORAS

  • Ashley Abbott: Eileen Davidson left the role in December 1988. Brenda Epperson assumed the part immediately afterward. This was a conventional adult recast, not a SORAS.
  • Nicholas Newman: introduced as a newborn and played by infants. Marco and Stefan Flores are generally credited as the first identifiable child performers in 1989.
  • Phillip “Chance” Chancellor IV: Chuckie and Kenny Gravino played the infant during this period.
  • No major SORAS occurred during Season 16. Victoria Newman and the other established children remained approximately within their existing age ranges.

New characters

  • Lisa Mansfield — first on-screen appearance: March 31, 1988; Brad’s previously unseen former wife.
  • George Rawlins — introduced in spring 1988 as Cassandra’s wealthy husband.
  • Chase Benson — introduced in July 1988, hired to seduce Nina.
  • Nicholas Newman — born December 31, 1988.
  • Jim Grainger — introduced in early 1989 as Scott’s father and Jessica’s former lover.

Lynne Bassett, Scott Grainger and Cassandra Rawlins debuted in March 1988, shortly before the commonly accepted beginning of Season 16, but remained important throughout it. Lisa’s documented run was March 31, 1988–March 3, 1989. (Wikipedia)

Departures

  • Steven Lassiter portrayed by Rod Arrants — killed; final appearance December 2, 1988.
  • Lisa Mansfield portrayed by Lynne Harbaugh — fled after Brad and Lauren were rescued; final appearance March 3, 1989.
  • Andy Richards portrayed by Steven Ford — moved to Pittsburgh after Farren chose to remain with her daughter; his appearances became intermittent.
  • Traci Abbott portrayed by Beth Maitland — temporarily left Genoa City after rejecting both Brad and Tim.
  • Eileen Davidson as Ashley Abbott — departed in December 1988, although Ashley remained through an immediate recast.

Returns

  • Lisa Mansfield entered the story as Brad’s returning former wife, although this was her first actual on-screen appearance.
  • Michael Crawford portrayed by Colby Chester returned in December 1988 after an earlier absence.
  • Casey Reed portrayed by Roberta Leighton made further family-related appearances.
  • Matt Miller portrayed by Robert Parucha appeared again around the Newman family.

Marriages

  • Victor Newman and Leanna Love — Las Vegas, October 1988. The marriage was invalid because Victor’s divorce from Nikki had not been legally finalised. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • John Abbott and Jessica Blair — married in late 1988 after John learned about Jessica’s AIDS diagnosis. They divorced in 1989 so Jessica could fulfil her wish to remarry Jim Grainger before her death.
  • Skip Evans and Carol Robbins — married around early 1989, with the support of the Abbott family.

Two weddings often associated with “1988” actually precede Season 16 under the anniversary-based chronology:

  • Katherine Chancellor and Rex Sterling — February 25, 1988. (IMDb)
  • Ashley Abbott and Steven Lassiter — early 1988, before the season’s March 28 starting point.

Deaths

  • Steven Lassiter — shot by the son of one of his former patients; died December 2, 1988. (Wikipedia)
  • Traci and Brad’s unborn child — Traci miscarried while Brad was being held captive by Lisa.
  • There were no other firmly documented deaths of established characters during the season. George Rawlins, Phillip Chancellor III, Derek Stuart and Jessica Blair died during the following broadcast cycle.

The mysterious Faren regained her memory and arranged to reconcile with her first husband, Evan, and to be a mother to their daughter, Betsy. Evan’s housekeeper and lover, Janet, felt rejected by Evan because he had promised to marry her. Angered, she fired a gun at Faren, but shot and killed Evan instead. Faren told Andy Richards that she needed to stay with her daughter to avoid adding any further trauma to her life. Andy abided by Faren’s wishes and moved to Pittsburgh.

Lauren wasn’t thrilled to learn that Traci was pregnant with Brad’s baby. But Brad Carlton had bigger problems than Lauren. Lisa, his ex-wife, wanted him back. Brad divorced Lisa after he had been paid a huge sum of money by his ex-father in-law, who didn’t approve of Brad. Lisa, however, was determined to resume her life with Brad. She arranged for him to be offered a lucrative job in Chicago. Instead, Brad accepted a job from Lauren. Eventually, Lisa went off the deep end and kidnapped Brad. She held him prisoner in a deserted lodge for several weeks. Meanwhile, Brad’s apparent desertion caused Traci to miscarry. In order to get through her loss, Traci turned to her writing, and to her former lover, Tim Sullivan.

After Jack Abbott’s scheme to swindle the Mergeron stock away from Victor Newman backfired, Jack was hounded by the IRS. There was, however, a bright side. Brittany, Jack’s auditor, soon felt an attraction toward the playboy and began dating him.

Marc Mergeron, who experienced a series of financial setbacks, became romantically involved with JoAnna, who soon began footing his bills. When Lauren learned that her mother was supporting Marc, she schemed to end that relationship. Her first step was to give Marc a job as a male model for the Fenmore Department Store chain. Marc also modeled for Jabot, but his arrogance eventually cost him the lucrative assignment.

Jill Abbott chose to ignore company procedure during the launching of her men’s line at Jabot. She spent huge sums of money to promote the new products, which enraged her ex-husband, John Abbott. Meanwhile, Jill pursued an affair with her handsome assistant, David Kimball.

Katherine Chancellor discovered that Rex Sterling had been hired by Jill to romance her. Nevertheless, she accepted Rex’s marriage proposal, which infuriated Jill, who was hoping for a proposal herself from Rex.

In a surprise move, Jill and Katherine teamed up to scheme against Nina Webster, who was pregnant with Phillip Chancellor’s baby. Katherine offered the pregnant young woman room and board in her home. To Nina’s disappointment, her living space was a cramped room in the attic. During Nina’s stay, Katherine and Jill tried unsuccessfully to prove that another man had fathered the young woman’s baby. They also offered Nina a huge sum of money to move to another part of the world, but Nina refused to take the bait. She was convinced that Phillip would eventually marry her and be a father to their baby son. Jill also arranged for a young man named Chase to romance Nina. Jill hoped that Chase would succeed in taking Nina away on a romantic vacation for three weeks, which would provide enough time to have Nina legally charged with deserting her baby. Nina, however, cut the vacation short when she discovered that baby Phillip was seriously ill. Phillip stood by Nina during the ordeal, which fueled her hope that they’d marry. Fortunately, the baby survived the illness.

Cricket’s mom, Jessica, arrived in Genoa City after she had dropped out of her daughter’s life for several years. Initially, Cricket didn’t want anything to do with Jessica, but sentiment got the better of the young model and they were soon reconciled. Jessica and John Abbott also fell in love. Jessica, however, neglected to tell her daughter or John that she was suffering from AIDS. Her secret came out when Jessica was suddenly hospitalized with a serious illness. She was treated by Dr. Scott Grainger.

Leanna Love, a former mental patient of Dr. Steven Lassiter, surfaced in Genoa City. Steven and Ashley Abbott had met and fallen in love. Leanne, however, believed that she was madly in love with and hated Ashley with a deadly passion. Her plans did not work, and eventually, Leanna abandoned her plans and her lunacy. She became involved with Jack Abbott, who arranged for Leanna to write a sensational tell-all biography, “Ruthless: The Victor Newman Story,” which would destroy Victor. Ironically, the wealthy businessman, who didn’t know about Leanna’s project, also hired her to write an authorized biography of his life. Without Jack’s consent, or knowledge, Leanna added an extra chapter to the unauthorized book that chronicled Ashley’s ill-fated affair with Victor, and included details about the young woman’s abortion.

Victor decided to postpone divorcing Nikki after he learned that Ashley had married Steven Lassiter. Nikki, who was also pregnant with Victor’s baby, hoped that Victor would eventually drop his divorce plans and resume their marriage. But when “Ruthless” hit the bookstores, Victor assumed that Nikki was responsible for the dirt on Ashley. In order to take the media’s attention off Ashley, Victor quickly divorced Nikki. In a surprise move, he married Leanna Love. Nikki, however, discovered that her divorce from Victor wasn’t legal. Meanwhile, Steven was killed, leaving Ashley a widow.

Paul Williams fell for a mysterious and beautiful woman named Cassandra. When Paul learned that Cassandra was an interior designer, he hired her to decorate his office. Soon after, Paul became romantically involved with Cassandra, but she was unwilling to take things beyond being just lovers. One evening, while dining at the home of George Rawlings, a client of Paul’s, the young private eye was surprised to discover that Cassandra was Rawlings’ wife. While socializing with George, the older gentleman confided to Paul that he was impotent. Nevertheless, George wanted to raise a child with Cassandra. To Paul’s surprise, George asked him to father the baby!

Cast photograph

This 1987 ensemble photograph is the closest surviving contemporary cast portrait corresponding to Season 15. It includes several characters introduced during the season, notably Rex Sterling and Steven Lassiter. It has not been possible to confirm that CBS formally labelled it the official “Season 15” photograph.

Major storylines

Nikki deceives Victor about her recovery

Nikki learned that the potentially fatal illness from which she had been suffering was in remission. Before she could tell Victor, she saw him embracing Ashley and assumed that he wanted to resume his relationship with her.

Convinced that Victor had reunited with her only because he believed she was dying, Nikki concealed her recovery. She also resumed her affair with Jack and conspired with him to obtain Victor’s shares in Mergeron Enterprises.

Douglas Austin discovered Nikki and Jack’s relationship. Victor eventually learned that Nikki was no longer ill and was furious that she had deceived him. He announced that he intended to divorce her.

Ashley and Steven

Ashley continued to recover from her nervous breakdown with the support of Dr. Steven Lassiter. Steven followed her to Genoa City and declared his love for her.

Ashley gradually accepted that her relationship with Victor was over and agreed to marry Steven. Their wedding took place in early 1988.

The marriage devastated Steven’s former patient Leanna Love, who believed that Steven belonged to her.

Leanna Love’s obsession

Leanna arrived in Genoa City on October 21, 1987. She was a former psychiatric patient of Steven’s and had developed an obsessive attachment to him.

She regarded Ashley as her romantic rival and attempted to undermine the relationship. Her increasingly unstable behaviour threatened Ashley and Steven’s wedding plans.

Leanna would subsequently become involved with Jack and begin writing Ruthless: The Victor Newman Story, but most of the book storyline unfolded after March 31, 1988. (Fandom)

Phillip, Cricket, Danny and Nina

Phillip Chancellor III fell in love with Cricket, although she remained emotionally connected to Danny.

Phillip began drinking to overcome his insecurity. After causing a car accident while intoxicated, Cricket claimed that she had been driving in order to protect him. Phillip eventually admitted the truth.

Cricket temporarily moved into Katherine’s home to support Phillip while he attempted to stop drinking. Their relationship became increasingly strained, and Cricket spent more time with Danny.

Nina deliberately got Phillip drunk and seduced him. When Cricket finally decided that she wanted to marry Phillip, Nina revealed their sexual encounter and later announced that she was pregnant.

Nina’s pregnancy

Katherine and Jill were horrified to learn that Nina was carrying Phillip’s child. Despite their intense rivalry, they joined forces in an effort to remove Nina from Phillip’s life.

Katherine allowed Nina to live at the Chancellor mansion but placed her in an uncomfortable attic room. Jill and Katherine tried to prove that someone else had fathered the baby and offered Nina money to leave Genoa City.

Nina refused because she remained convinced that Phillip would eventually marry her and raise their child.

The birth of Phillip “Chance” Chancellor IV

Nina gave birth to Phillip Chancellor III’s son in March 1988. The baby was named Phillip Robert Chancellor IV and later became known as Chance Chancellor.

His birth permanently connected Nina to the Chancellor family and intensified the conflict between Nina, Jill, Katherine and Cricket.

Jill recruits Rex Sterling

After Phillip chose to remain with Katherine, Jill sought revenge against her longtime rival.

She found a homeless man named Brian Romalotti and transformed him into the apparently wealthy and sophisticated Rex Sterling. Jill paid him to court Katherine, hoping that he would humiliate her.

The scheme did not unfold as Jill expected: Rex genuinely grew fond of Katherine, while Jill herself developed feelings for him.

Jill’s recast and the Jabot men’s line

Jill continued developing her men’s cosmetics line at Jabot, frequently ignoring company procedures and spending large sums on promotion.

She hired David Kimble as her assistant and became attracted to him. David encouraged the relationship because he wanted access to Jill’s connections and money.

During this storyline, Jess Walton replaced Brenda Dickson as Jill.

Brad, Traci and Lauren

While Traci was studying at Stanford, Lauren told Brad that Traci was becoming involved with her former lover, Tim Sullivan.

Feeling rejected and suspicious, Brad allowed Lauren to seduce him. Traci eventually returned to Genoa City and reconciled with Brad, but Lauren remained determined to continue their affair.

Traci subsequently became pregnant with Brad’s child. The pregnancy and Brad’s increasingly complicated past would become major elements of the following season.

Farren regains her memory

Farren gradually remembered that her real name was Michelle Sanderson and that she had previously been married to Evan Sanderson. She also remembered their daughter, Betsy.

Farren decided to reunite with Evan and become a mother to Betsy. This effectively ended her marriage to Andy Richards.

Evan’s housekeeper and lover, Janet Piersall, was furious because Evan had promised to marry her. Janet attempted to shoot Farren but accidentally killed Evan instead.

After Evan’s death, Farren chose to remain with Betsy. Andy respected her decision and left for Pittsburgh.

Cricket reunites with her mother

Cricket’s estranged mother, Jessica Blair, arrived in Genoa City in January 1988.

Cricket initially rejected Jessica because she had been absent for much of her daughter’s life. They gradually reconciled, while Jessica became close to John Abbott.

Jessica concealed the fact that she was living with AIDS. Her condition was revealed after she became seriously ill and was hospitalised.

Scott Grainger arrives

Dr. Scott Grainger began treating Jessica in March 1988. His connection to Jessica and Cricket would later be revealed to be much more complicated than either woman initially realised.

Scott subsequently became an important love interest for Lauren Fenmore, but that relationship developed after this season.

Paul meets Cassandra

Near the end of the season, Paul met a mysterious interior designer named Cassandra Rawlins.

He hired Cassandra to decorate his office, and they became romantically involved. Cassandra refused to explain why she would not fully commit to him.

The truth—that Cassandra was married to the wealthy George Rawlins—would emerge during the following season.

Lauren placed a personals ad in the newspaper, which was designed to discover Faren’s true identity. Thanks to the ad, a man showed up, who introduced himself as Evan. Evan said that he was determined to get in touch with the Faren–the mystery woman in the ad–claiming that she was missing wife, Michelle. Lauren, however, was reluctant to assist Evan because she worried that Paul would be angry at her for meddling in Faren and Andy’s marriage. Lauren also fretted that Evan’s appearance would create complications for Andy and Faren.

Evan managed to locate Faren on his own, however, she couldn’t remember him or their daughter, Betsy. Evan finally accepted Faren’s memory loss and prepared to return home. But Faren’s memories of her former life, as Evan’s wife and Betsy’s mom, began to return.

Paul Williams finally forgave Lauren for submitting a nude photo of him to the magazine that published it as a centerfold. He also proposed that they remarry. Initially, Lauren turned down his proposal, but then had a change of heart. However, Paul decided that remarrying might not be the best thing for either of them.

Lauren focused her attention on Brad Carlton. While Brad’s wife, Traci, was away at Stanford Lauren told Brad that Traci’s former lover, Tim, was also at Stanford. Believing that his wife was having an affair, Brad allowed himself to be seduced by Lauren. Eventually, Traci returned to Genoa City and reconciled with Brad. Despite the reconciliation, Lauren was intent on continuing her affair with Brad.

After getting her ex-husband John’s approval, Jill Abbott launched a new men’s line of products under the Jabot banner. Although Jill approached her new project with enthusiasm, her personal life was in a shambles. To Jill’s disappointment, Phillip made it clear that he was interested in remaining at Katherine Chancellor’s home. Jill waged a custody battle for Phillip, which caused several unseemly details to surface, such as Katherine’s move to take away Phillip’s hefty inheritance when he was still a small boy. Despite what happened in the past, Phillip chose to stay with Katherine because she provided him with a level of security and attention that he had never received from Jill. To get back at Katherine, Jill hired a homeless man–whom she christened Rex Sterling– to pose as a wealthy gentleman and romance her nemesis. Meanwhile, Katherine also bribed a photographer to lavish Jill with attention.

Phillip was befriended by Cricket Blair and Nina Webster. Eventually, Phillip’s feelings for Cricket went beyond friendship. But Cricket didn’t return his affections because she was dating Danny Romalotti. Meanwhile, Nina waged an aggressive campaign to win Phillip’s heart. She soon had competition. Cricket and Danny agreed to date other people for the summer, and Cricket fell in love with Phillip.

During Phillip’s and Cricket’s romance, Phillip began drinking to give himself confidence. One evening, while driving Cricket home, Phillip got into an accident. Cricket told authorities that she was driving so that Phillip, who was under the influence of alcohol, wouldn’t be arrested. The negative publicity nearly cost Cricket her job as a model at Jabot. But Phillip, who had no recollection of the accident, ultimately assumed responsibility after Danny told him what actually had happened. Cricket temporarily moved into Katherine’s home to lend Phillip emotional support as he struggled to quit drinking. But the circumstances created tension and the young lovers found themselves quarreling. One evening, while Cricket was enjoying an innocent visit with Danny, Nina got Phillip drunk and seduced him.

Cricket was forced to make a decision between Phillip and Danny when both young men proposed marriage to her. While Cricket was struggling to make up her mind, Nina schemed to win Phillip. Shortly after Cricket resolved to accept Phillip’s proposal, Nina broke the news about their sexual encounter. The ploy nearly worked. Hurt by Phillip’s infidelity, Cricket arranged to return his engagement ring. At the last moment, Cricket realized how deeply she loved Phillip and she proceeded with plans to marry him. Both Katherine and Jill were delighted by the news. Nina, however, still had a trump card she hadn’t played. To Katherine’s and Jill’s horror, Nina announced that she was pregnant with Phillip’s baby.

Victor Newman continued to provide comfort to Nikki, who was stricken by a potentially life-threatening illness. Ashley Abbott, who was pregnant by Victor, declined Matt Newman’s proposal. Instead, she aborted Victor’s baby. When Victor discovered that Ashley had been pregnant with his baby and had had an abortion, he berated her. Traumatized, Ashley suffered a nervous breakdown in New York City. Since she wasn’t carrying any identification, Ashley ended up in an overcrowded mental institution, where she was treated by Dr. Lassister.

Eventually, John Abbott located his daughter, Ashley, in the New York mental institution. He arranged for her return to Genoa City. Meanwhile, Dr. Lassister, who had fallen in love with his patient, also moved to Genoa City so that he could pursue a romance with Ashley.

Nikki discovered that she was facing a possible terminal disease. Determined to make sure that her daughter, Victoria, had a mother figure in her life, Nikki ultimately accepted Ashley’s romance with Victor. But before Nikki could step aside, and open the door for Victor and Ashley to reconcile, Nikki’s doctor announced that her disease was in remission. Overjoyed, Nikki rushed to tell Victor the news. When Nikki arrived home, she accidentally saw Victor embrace Ashley.

Jumping to the wrong conclusion that Victor and Ashley were lovers again, Nikki decided that Victor was only with her because of her disease. Angered, she also decided not to tell Victor the news about her clean bill of health. She resumed her affair with Jack Abbott and conspired with him to have Victor sign over his shares of the Mergeron stock to her. Victor’s close friend, Douglas Austin, accidentally discovered Nikki’s involvement with Jack. Soon after, Nikki came down with a bad case of food poisoning and she was rushed to a doctor. Talking to Nikki’s doctor, Victor inadvertently discovered that her disease was in remission. Outraged by her deception, Victor announced that he was filing for divorce. And he was left hoping that there was still time for him to reconcile with Ashley

Cast photograph

This contemporary photograph shows members of the 1986 cast. It is more representative of Season 14 than the previously supplied 1987 photograph, which included characters introduced after March 31, 1987. However, I have not found evidence that CBS formally designated one particular picture as the official numbered “Season 14 cast photo.”

Major storylines

Jill’s affair with Jack destroys the Abbott family

John discovered that the man photographed with his wife, Jill, was his own son, Jack. Devastated by the betrayal, John ordered Jack to leave the Abbott home.

Jill used the threat of exposing the scandal publicly to secure a substantial divorce settlement and partial control of Jabot Cosmetics. Jack was ostracised by his family and blamed Jill for the destruction of his relationship with John.

When Jill was later shot in her bathroom, she accused Jack. To spare his father the humiliation of having the affair exposed in court, Jack confessed to a crime he had not committed. He was sentenced to work at a homeless shelter during the day and spend his nights in prison.

Sven shoots and kidnaps Jill

The real culprit was eventually revealed to be Sven Peterson, Jill’s former masseur.

Sven later kidnapped Jill and locked her inside a refrigerated meat locker, intending to kill her. Jack and Carl Williams found and rescued her, proving that Jack had not been responsible for the shooting. Jack was subsequently released.

Jack and Ellen

While working at the homeless shelter, Jack became close to Ellen Winters, the woman who ran it. Their friendship developed into a romance, but Ellen eventually ended the relationship because she believed Jack needed someone more sophisticated and worldly.

Brad and Traci marry

Brad Carlton, initially employed as the Abbott family’s gardener, began dating Traci. Jack suspected that Brad was interested in the Abbott fortune rather than Traci herself.

Brad obtained a position at Jabot and proved surprisingly successful. Despite Jack’s misgivings, John approved of the relationship, and Brad and Traci married on June 20, 1986.

Their marriage soon faced problems as Brad became increasingly preoccupied with his career and Traci resumed her studies. Traci also reconnected with her former lover, Tim Sullivan.

Phillip Chancellor III returns as a teenager

After spending several years at boarding school in Switzerland, Jill’s son returned to Genoa City, now portrayed as a teenager by Thom Bierdz.

Phillip avoided Jill and moved into Katherine’s mansion. Katherine persuaded him to remain in Genoa City, attend school and adopt his late father’s surname, Chancellor.

His return reopened the long-running conflict between Jill and Katherine, with both women competing for his affection and loyalty.

Nina and Rose DeVille’s illegal adoption ring

Cricket befriended two pregnant teenage runaways, Mollie and Nina. With Danny’s help, Cricket reunited Mollie with her mother.

Nina was less fortunate. She was living at a home operated by Rose DeVille, unaware that Rose was running an illegal baby-selling operation.

Nina gave birth to a son on August 12, 1986. Rose told Nina that the baby had died and secretly sold him to another family. Cricket, Danny, Paul and Carl became involved in the effort to expose Rose and locate the child.

The baby was eventually revealed, many years later, to be Ronan Malloy. (en.wikipedia.org)

Lauren, Paul and Shawn’s aftermath

After surviving Shawn Garrett’s attempt to bury her alive, Lauren struggled to repair her relationship with Paul.

Paul eventually accepted that Lauren had divorced him only because Shawn had threatened to have him killed. Lauren and Paul reconciled, although the trauma caused Lauren to lose the baby she had been carrying.

Seeking a more adventurous life, Lauren joined Paul and Andy’s private-investigation agency. She also submitted a nude photograph of Paul to a women’s magazine. The photograph won a contest and was published as a centrefold, much to Paul’s embarrassment and anger.

Andy, Farren and Diane

Andy and Diane’s marriage ended in divorce. Andy then fell in love with the mysterious singer Farren Connor, who suffered from amnesia and could not remember her former life.

Lauren remained suspicious of Farren and investigated her background. Andy and Farren nevertheless married in an impromptu ceremony at Paul’s apartment.

Lauren’s newspaper advertisement eventually attracted Evan Sanderson, who claimed that Farren was actually his missing wife, Michelle, and the mother of their daughter, Betsy.

Farren initially remembered neither Evan nor Betsy, but fragments of her previous life gradually returned, threatening her marriage to Andy.

Victor, Nikki and Ashley

Victor’s romance with Ashley became increasingly serious, while Nikki searched for a way to regain her former husband.

Victor encouraged his brother, Matt Miller, to become involved with Nikki so that Victoria would have a stable father figure. However, everything changed when Casey informed Victor that Nikki might be suffering from a terminal illness.

Believing Nikki was dying, Victor reunited with her to make her remaining time happy. Ashley then discovered that she was pregnant with Victor’s child.

Ashley’s pregnancy and breakdown

Matt offered to marry Ashley and raise Victor’s baby as his own. Ashley refused and chose to terminate the pregnancy.

When Victor learned that Ashley had been pregnant and had undergone an abortion, he furiously confronted her. Traumatised by the pregnancy, the abortion and Victor’s rejection, Ashley suffered a nervous breakdown in New York.

Because she carried no identification, she was admitted to a public psychiatric institution. There she was treated by Dr. Steven Lassiter, who developed romantic feelings for her.

John eventually found Ashley and brought her back to Genoa City. Steven followed her, hoping to continue their relationship. Steven first appeared on January 6, 1987. (kiwix.thunderforge.net)

Nikki’s illness goes into remission

Nikki prepared herself for the possibility that she would die and began to accept that Ashley might eventually take her place in Victor and Victoria’s lives.

Her doctors subsequently announced that her illness was in remission. Before Nikki could tell Victor, she saw him comforting Ashley and incorrectly concluded that they had resumed their affair.

Feeling that Victor had remained with her only because he believed she was dying, Nikki concealed her recovery and turned to Jack for emotional support.

Jill’s Jabot men’s line and David Kimble

Jill used her settlement from John to establish a men’s product line at Jabot. She hired the ambitious David Kimble as her assistant.

David was charming but calculating and was already interested in exploiting Jill’s connection to the Abbott and Chancellor fortunes. His full transformation into a murderous con artist would occur in later seasons.

Deaths

There were no confirmed deaths of major regular characters during Season 14.

Two events may cause confusion but should not be listed as deaths:

  • Nina’s newborn son was reported dead by Rose DeVille but had actually been stolen and illegally adopted.
  • Ashley terminated her pregnancy with Victor’s child; this belongs under pregnancy storylines rather than the cast death register.

Shawn Garrett forced a pregnant Lauren to divorce Paul Williams and move in with him by threatening to have Paul killed by a professional hit man. After moving in with Shawn, Lauren tried to contact Paul and let him know she still loved him. However, Shawn watched Lauren too closely to allow her to make any contact with her former husband. Lauren finally agreed to tour Japan with Shawn by her side. Initially, Shawn thought that Lauren was thrilled with touring Japan together. However, he discovered that Lauren was repulsed by him and was only trying to keep Paul alive. Angered, Shawn arranged to bury Lauren alive in San Francisco.

To locate Lauren, Paul and Andy sought the help of Tamra, a psychic friend of Lauren’s. Tamra used her psychic powers and discovered Lauren’s whereabouts. When Paul and Andy rescued Lauren, Shawn was killed in a fury of gunfire. Sadly, the ordeal caused Lauren to miscarry. At first, Paul had a difficult time accepting Lauren’s bizarre explanation for divorcing him, but after weighing the facts, Paul decided that she was telling the truth and they reconciled.

Bored with being a housewife, Lauren persuaded Paul to let her join his investigation agency as a private eye. Lauren also submitted a nude photo of her husband, with his knowledge, to a contest being held by a women’s magazine. Paul’s entry won and his photo soon appeared as a centerfold. When Paul discovered the truth, thanks to a church friend of his mom’s, he attempted to buy every available copy of the magazine and destroy them. He was also infuriated with Lauren.

Andy Richards and Diane divorced. Soon after, Andy fell in love with the mysterious Faren, a singer. Although Andy was anxious to have a relationship with Faren, she refused to make any commitments and was reluctant to discuss her past. Eventually, Faren confessed to Andy that she had lost her memory and had no recollection of her real identity. Andy accepted Faren’s story, but Lauren was suspicious. Thanks to Lauren’s suspicions, Faren underwent a battery of medical tests, but they proved inconclusive.

While Lauren encouraged a disappointed Diane to reconcile with Andy, he was only interested in having a friendship with his ex-wife. Soon after, Andy and Faren married, with Lauren’s grudging acceptance. After their honeymoon, a man showed up on Lauren’s doorstep, claiming to be Faren’s husband.

Traci Abbott was elated when Brad Carlton, the Abbotts’ sexy young gardener, asked her on a date. But Jack Abbott suspected that Brad was only interested in romancing Traci because of her link to the Abbott fortune. Despite Jack’s suspicions, Brad succeeded in landing a job at Jabot. With Traci’s assistance and encouragement, Brad excelled at his new job and won John’s approval. Soon after, Traci and Brad married. To Jack’s disappointment, Brad’s future at Jabot was made solid when he married Traci.

Cricket Blair befriended two pregnant teenage runaways, Mollie and Nina. With Danny Romalotti’s help, Cricket orchestrated a reunion between Mollie and her mom. Nina, however, wasn’t as fortunate. She lost her baby to Rose DeVille, who operated a black market baby ring. Danny and Cricket agreed to help Nina locate the people who had adopted her baby boy.

As Ashley Abbott’s romance with Victor Newman escalated, Nikki looked for ways to end her ex-husband’s relationship. When it became clear that Victor intended to marry Ashley, Nikki turned to Jack Abbott for emotional comfort, but he wasn’t interested in resuming their romance.

Victor encouraged his brother, Matt, to romance Nikki, so that his daughter Victoria would have a man in her life. However, Victor’s feelings for Nikki changed when he learned from her sister, Casey, that Nikki was suffering from a potentially terminal illness. In order to insure that Nikki’s last days were happy, Victor reconciled with her. Meanwhile, Ashley discovered that she was pregnant with Victor’s baby. Just as she was about to break the news to Victor, she accidentally heard him and Casey discussing Nikki’s health. With Victor and Nikki back together, Ashley found herself alone. Realizing the dilemma that Ashley was in, as an unwed mother, Matt volunteered to marry her.

John Abbott discovered that his son, Jack, was the man in the photos with his wife, Jill. He ordered Jack to move out. But Jill won partial control of John’s company, Jabot, as part of her hefty divorce settlement from John, after she threatened to expose to the press John’s reason for divorcing her.

Shunned by his family, and out of a job, Jack blamed Jill as the source for all of his problems. When Jill was shot in her bathroom, she accused Jack of pulling the trigger. Rather than create more hurt for his father by having his affair to Jill made public, Jack confessed to shooting Jill. He was sentenced to work during the day in a shelter for homeless people, while spending his evenings in prison. Eventually, Jack fell in love with Ellen Winters who ran the shelter. But Ellen ended their romance because she felt that Jack deserved someone more worldly and sophisticated.

Meanwhile, the culprit who shot Jill was still at large. Eventually, Jill discovered that Sven, her former masseur, had tried to kill her. Sven kidnapped Jill and locked her in a refrigerated meat locker, where he left her to die. Fortunately, Jill was rescued by Jack and Carl Williams. Soon after, Jack was released from prison.

After spending several years in a Swiss boarding school, Jill’s teenage son, Phillip, resurfaced in Genoa City for the summer. Rather than see his mother, Phillip moved in with Katherine Chancellor, who was welcomed his company. Katherine persuaded Phillip to enroll in a nearby school and he even agreed to take his father’s last name, Chancellor.

For this report, Season 13 covers March 25, 1985–March 21, 1986.

Episode count: approximately 255 original episodes.

A precise CBS episode total is difficult to establish because the programme was not originally catalogued publicly by “season”; modern databases reconstructed the seasons afterward, and contemporary pre-emptions are not fully documented.

Main plots

Jack and Jill’s affair is finally exposed

The photographs showing Jack Abbott and his stepmother Jill together had originally been taken by Lindsey Wells in November 1983. During Season 13, Katherine Chancellor finally obtained and used the evidence.

On March 3, 1986, John discovered that Jack was the man in the photographs. He confronted his son and expelled him from the Abbott home. Jill then used the potentially ruinous scandal as leverage during her divorce negotiations, eventually obtaining a substantial financial settlement and an interest in Jabot. Soap Opera Digest’s March 3 retrospective

Jack’s supposed marriage ceremony with Lindsey was part of their deception and was not a genuine lasting marriage.

Victor, Nikki, Ashley and Matt

Victor and Ashley became increasingly emotionally involved, placing Victor’s marriage to Nikki under severe pressure.

Matt Miller arrived in Genoa City in 1985 and was reunited with his older brother, Victor—formerly Christian Miller. Nikki attempted to encourage a relationship between Matt and Ashley, hoping that Matt would draw Ashley away from Victor. The plan failed. Matt was played by Robert Parucha from 1985 to 1987. Matt Miller’s character history

The later stages of Ashley’s pregnancy, abortion and Victor’s return to the supposedly dying Nikki belong primarily to the following production period and should not all be placed indiscriminately in Season 13.

Brad Carlton arrives

Brad arrived in April 1985, initially working around the Abbott estate as a gardener and pool attendant. His looks immediately attracted Traci, beginning the relationship that would eventually lead to their marriage—but that marriage occurred after this season.

Don Diamont joined the programme as Brad in 1985 and remained until 1996, later returning in 1998. Don Diamont/Brad Carlton casting history

Tyrone infiltrates Joseph Anthony’s organization

After learning that the mob had placed a contract on him, Tyrone Jackson disguised himself as a white man named Robert Tyrone. The disguise allowed him to infiltrate Joseph Anthony’s criminal organization.

While posing as Robert, Tyrone courted Anthony’s daughter Alana and persuaded her to marry him. Alana discovered his true identity on their wedding night and fled. Anthony was subsequently killed, ending much of the immediate mob threat.

Meanwhile, the apparently dangerous “Kong” was revealed as Nathan Hastings. Nathan received immunity for helping the authorities. Tyrone was disappointed to discover that Nathan had also become interested in Amy Lewis. Contemporary storyline summary

Lauren, Shawn and Paul

Shawn Garrett’s obsession with Lauren Fenmore escalated throughout 1985 and early 1986. Lauren pretended to cooperate with Shawn partly to protect Paul.

After discovering that Lauren did not genuinely love him, Shawn drugged her and attempted to bury her alive. Paul Williams and Andy Richards located and rescued her. Shawn was killed during the resulting gunfire. Soap Opera Digest retrospective

Farren Connor’s mystery

Farren Connor arrived as a mysterious young woman suffering from memory problems. Her past and true identity became a central element of Andy Richards’s storyline, ultimately developing into a romance between Andy and Farren.

Jill’s divorce representation

Attorney Michael Crawford entered the story in October 1985 when Jill retained him during the collapse of her marriage to John. Michael subsequently became personally involved with Jill. The character was portrayed by Colby Chester from 1985 to 1990. 1980s character guide

Births

No major on-screen birth is securely documented during March 25, 1985–March 21, 1986.

Phillip Chancellor III was already a child, Victoria Newman had been born in 1982, and Nicholas Newman was not born until several years later.

Recasts and SORAS

Approximate dateCharacterChange
1985Shawn GarrettTom McConnell was replaced by Grant Cramer. Cramer remained through Shawn’s death in 1986.
Early 1986Jill Foster AbbottDeborah Adair briefly substituted for Brenda Dickson; this was a temporary performer replacement rather than a story-driven recast.
1986Diane JenkinsAlex Donnelley resumed the role following Diane’s absence from the canvas.

SORAS

No major child-to-adult SORAS occurred within the strict Season 13 dates.

The frequently confused case is Phillip Chancellor III:

  • During Season 13 he was still treated as a child/young teenager.
  • May 13, 1986: Thom Bierdz debuted as the rapidly aged adult Phillip.
  • Because that occurred after March 21, it belongs to Season 14, not Season 13.

Victoria Newman remained a child and continued to be portrayed by Ashley Nicole Millan.

After discovering that the mob, headed by Mr. Anthony, had a contract on him, Tyrone Jackson disguised himself as a white man named Robert. Tyrone also used the disguise to infiltrate the mob so that he could obtain valuable information about their dealings and ultimately destroy them. While posing as Robert, Tyrone romanced Mr. Anthony’s daughter Alana. Eventually, he persuaded Alana to marry him. On their wedding night, Alana discovered the truth about Tyrone. Shocked, she left town. Mr. Anthony died, paving the way for a reconciliation between Tyrone and Amy. But to Tyrone’s disappointment, he discovered that he had a competitor for Amy’s affection, a one-time hood named Kong.

Dina Abbott Mergerson was in a constant state of agitation now that her former lover, Brent Davis, was back in town. Eventually, Ashley Abbott, Dina’s daughter, learned that Brent was her real father. Traumatized by the news, Ashley wandered through tone in a haze and was picked up by a truck driver. The driver tried to take advantage of Ashley’s unstable condition, but she managed to fend him off. Soon after, she landed a job at a roadside diner and called herself “Annie.” One afternoon, the truck driver wandered into the diner, realized Ashley’s true identity and used it to his advantage. He phoned John Abbott, said he knew of Ashley’s whereabouts and then demanded a ransom. Fortunately, Victor Newman managed to locate Ashley and rescued her from the truck driver. He returned Ashley to Genoa City, but she was no condition to go home. Instead, she stayed at the Newmans’ home, which troubled Nikki.

Ashley finally forgave her real father and not long after, Brent Davis died. After Ashley recuperated from her trauma she found herself attracted to Victor, who returned the attention. Feeling neglected, Nikki had an affair with Jack Abbott. But Nikki realized that her heart belonged to Victor and vowed to save her marriage. In order to get Ashley out of the way, Nikki tried to pair Ashley with Victor’s brother, Matt Miller. Ashley found Matt appealing, but she was too involved with Victor to think about seeing another man. Nevertheless, Ashley agreed to see Matt romantically.

Jack tried to keep his mind off Nikki by resuming his former position as president of Jabot Cosmetics. Marc Mergeron sold his shares of Mergeron Enterprises to Victor Newman for a hefty profit and left town. Victor’s former wife, Julia, also packed her bags and left with her infant daughter.

Douglas Austin found himself frustrated that Boobsie wasn’t interested in accepting his affections. Eventually, he devised a scheme that he was confident would win Boobsie’s sympathy. Douglas pretended that he was dying from a mysterious illness. Fearing that she could lose Douglas forever, Boobsie realized that she loved him. Even after Boobsie found out that Douglas had fooled her, she continued to love him. Soon after, they married.

With the incriminating photos of Jill and Jack still in her possession, Katherine Chancellor hatched a plan guaranteed to torment Jill. She cut a copy of the photos into small pieces and sent them to John Abbott, one by one. In order to protect Jack, Katherine refrained from sending the piece that would reveal his identity. When the puzzle was finally completed, John was so upset that he suffered a stroke.

Jill tried to convince John that the photo had been taken long before she married him. But John didn’t buy her story. He filed for divorce. Desperate to stay married to John, Jill pretended to slip into a deep depression. Katherine, however, convinced John that Jill was only pretending to be depressed. John ordered Jill out of his house. Realizing that things were hopeless between them, Jill tried to win as much money from John as possible. She also became romantically involved with the Abbotts sexy young gardener, Brad Carlton.

Lauren’s mother, JoAnna, returned to Genoa City, with the hope of reconciling with her former husband, Neil. But to JoAnna’s disappointment, Neil was already in love with Gina Roma. Lauren, who wanted to see her parents reunited, checked into Gina’s background and discovered that Gina was an ex-con. Lauren exposed Gina’s secret to Neil, who soon broke off their relationship. Gina vowed to get even with Lauren. But Lauren already had enough problems to content with, most notably her marriage to Paul Williams, which had hit a bumpy road.

Although Paul was anxious to start a family, Lauren only pretended that she wanted to get pregnant. Instead, she pursuing her singing career. Meanwhile, Shawn Garrett grew jealous of Lauren’s professional partnership with Danny Romalotti and sought to get him out of the picture. Shawn began slipping Danny poison, which affected his voice and jeopardized his music career. Shawn also taped Lauren’s private conversations with Paul. Lauren and Paul briefly separated, but reconciled, which infuriated Shawn. In order to keep Lauren under his control, Shawn threatened to murder Paul if Lauren didn’t abide by his wishes.

Traci Abbott pursued a music career, despite being undermined by Lauren. Traci’s marriage to Danny, however, proved to be short-lived. Traci miscarried and they divorced. Nevertheless, Traci and Danny continued to be friends. Tim tried to rekindle a romance with Traci, but Traci discovered that Tim’s new wife was pregnant. Fed up with Tim’s emotional abuse, Traci rebuffed his advances. Instead, she focused her attention on Brad Carlton.

Main plots

Victor and Nikki’s wedding

Victor Newman and Nikki Reed were finally married in an elaborate ceremony on April 13, 1984. Nikki wore an extravagant lace wedding dress with puffed sleeves, while Victor formally recognised the family he had created with Nikki and their daughter, Victoria.

The wedding became one of the programme’s defining events and established Victor and Nikki as its central supercouple. The date is confirmed in the documented history of their relationship. Victor and Nikki Newman

Eve Howard tries to stop the wedding

Eve Howard escaped from the psychiatric hospital after reading about Victor and Nikki’s wedding. She infiltrated the wedding venue by disguising herself as a member of the catering staff.

Eve planned to kill Nikki but was interrupted by Nikki’s sister, Casey Reed. She then hid inside a trunk intended for Victor and Nikki’s honeymoon trip. When the newlyweds unexpectedly changed their travel plans, Eve’s scheme collapsed and she was returned to the institution.

Rick Daros returns

Rick Daros, one of Nikki’s former lovers, returned and became involved with Eve. The two escaped from psychiatric care and targeted Victor and Nikki.

Rick’s return revived Nikki’s traumatic memories of their earlier relationship. Victor once again had to protect her from Rick’s increasingly dangerous behaviour.

Victor and Nikki’s troubled married life

Their marriage began with considerable passion but also with the problems that would define their relationship for decades:

  • Victor’s need for control;
  • Nikki’s insecurity about fitting into Victor’s social and business world;
  • the presence of former lovers;
  • Victor’s emotional distance;
  • and recurring disputes over Nikki’s independence.

The Abbott family and Dina’s return

Dina Abbott Mergeron’s presence continued to destabilise the Abbott family. Jack, Ashley and Traci had very different reactions to the mother who had abandoned them.

The story explored:

  • John’s unresolved feelings toward Dina;
  • Jack’s anger and resentment;
  • Traci’s desire for maternal affection;
  • Ashley’s questions about Dina’s past;
  • and the rivalry between Dina and Jill.

Marla Adams began playing Dina during the preceding season and remained an important part of the Abbott storyline during Season 12. Her original tenure began in 1983. Marla Adams’s original Y&R run

John and Jill Abbott’s marriage deteriorates

Jill’s marriage to John became increasingly difficult. She resented the amount of influence John’s children exercised over him, while Jack remained determined to drive her out of the Abbott household.

Jill also wanted greater status within Jabot Cosmetics. Her professional ambitions, jealousy of Dina and conflicts with Jack pushed the marriage closer to collapse.

Lindsey continued using the photographs and negatives to manipulate Jack & Jill. Jack slept with Lindsey and tried several schemes to recover the evidence, but she retained control of the negatives.

Jack Abbott’s ambitions

Jack continued scheming to strengthen his position at Jabot. His desire to control the family company frequently placed him in conflict with John and Ashley.

His behaviour was motivated by a combination of professional ambition, resentment of Jill and his determination to protect the Abbott family as he understood it.

Lauren, Danny and Traci

Lauren Fenmore and Traci Abbott competed for Danny Romalotti’s love. Lauren repeatedly humiliated Traci, particularly by mocking her appearance and weight.

Traci’s vulnerability and Danny’s protectiveness brought them closer together. Danny cared deeply about Traci but did not necessarily share the intensity of her romantic feelings.

The storyline became so controversial that Tracey E. Bregman later recalled receiving threats from viewers angered by Lauren’s treatment of Traci. Tracey E. Bregman on the storyline

Danny and Traci marry

Danny married Traci during the 1984–85 period. His decision was driven partly by affection and partly by guilt and responsibility.

Their marriage was emotionally fragile because Danny remained conflicted about Lauren, while Traci feared that she could never truly compete with her.

Paul and Lauren’s marriage

Paul Williams and Lauren Fenmore married during the 1984 portion of the season. Their relationship quickly suffered because of Lauren’s continued emotional involvement with Danny and her increasingly unpredictable behaviour.

Paul eventually realised that Lauren was not fully committed to their marriage.

Shawn Garrett’s obsession with Lauren

Shawn Garrett became obsessed with Lauren. What began as romantic attention escalated into stalking, kidnapping and psychological terror.

The story eventually led to Lauren being trapped and buried alive. Paul, Danny and the people close to Lauren searched for her before it was too late. The storyline transformed Lauren from an antagonist into a more sympathetic figure.

Amy Lewis and Tyrone Jackson

Tyrone Jackson arrived in Genoa City and became romantically involved with Amy Lewis. His introduction also expanded the show’s Black cast and laid the foundations for the organised-crime storyline that would become more prominent during Season 13.

The later story in which Tyrone disguised himself as a white man called “Robert Tyrone” and infiltrated Anthony Anthony’s criminal organisation largely belongs to the following season and should not be treated as a principal Season 12 plot.

Births

There were no major on-screen births conclusively documented during Season 12.

The children regularly seen or mentioned included:

  • Victoria Newman, daughter of Victor Newman and Nikki Reed;
  • Cole Howard, son of Eve Howard;
  • Heather Stevens, daughter of Paul Williams and April Stevens;
  • Phillip Chancellor III, son of Jill Foster and Phillip Chancellor II.

Recasts and SORAS

Jill Foster Abbott

  • Brenda Dickson portrayed Jill throughout Season 12.
  • Dickson had returned to the role in 1983 after Deborah Adair’s tenure.
  • Therefore, this was a recent recast in the programme’s history, but the change itself occurred before Season 12 began. Dickson’s documented second run lasted from 1983 to 1987. Brenda Dickson’s Y&R tenure

Victoria Newman

  • Ashley Nicole Millan continued portraying Victoria as a young child.
  • No SORAS occurred during Season 12.

Phillip Chancellor III

  • Phillip remained a child during this season.
  • His major SORAS occurred later, when Thom Bierdz began playing the teenage Phillip in 1986.

Heather Stevens

  • Heather remained a small child.
  • Surviving sources do not consistently identify every child performer used for the role.

There was therefore no major child-to-adult SORAS during Season 12.

Deaths

There were no major permanent deaths among the central contract characters during Season 12.

The deaths of figures such as Max, who accidentally impaled himself after discovering that Victor was alive, belonged to an earlier phase of the Eve Howard storyline and should not be listed as a Season 12 death.

Likewise, deaths connected with Anthony Anthony’s criminal organisation belong mainly to the subsequent 1985–86 storyline.

After a spiteful Alison revealed that Victor Newman was the true father of Nikki’s baby, Nikki’s husband, Kevin, left town. Meanwhile, Nikki continued to be in the dark about the real paternity of her daughter. Rick Daros proposed marriage to Nikki. Instead, Nikki suggested that they live together and Rick agreed. However, after Nikki moved in with Rick, he underwent a character transformation and became obsessed with her. It was soon discovered that Rick’s tyrannical jealousy drove him to murder his first wife, Melissa. Rick kidnapped Nikki and dragged her to St. Croix, a small island in the Pacific. Victor, Andy and Paul realized that Nikki’s life was in danger. They trailed her to the small island and rescued her.

Soon after, Nikki discovered that Victor was Victoria’s father, and Nikki fell in love with Victor again. Eventually, they made plans to marry, but the ceremony came close to being destroyed by Eve Howard, who had escaped the loony bin. Fortunately, Eve was recaptured, and the couple exchanged vows. After they became husband and wife, Nikki arranged for Victor to be reunited with his mother, Cora Miller. But the reconciliation was brief. Cora soon died from a terminal illness. Meanwhile, Victor lent emotional support to his pal, Douglas Austin, who was pursuing a hooker named Boobsie Calwell.

Before Victor’s reconciliation with Nikki, he became briefly involved with his ex-wife Julia. The affair was short-lived. After a one-night encounter with Eric Garrison, Julia discovered that she was pregnant. She prematurely gave birth to a baby daughter. Eric didn’t know that he was the infant’s dad and he continued to be interested in Ashley Abbott. Meanwhile, Victor learned the truth about the paternity of Julia’s baby, but he stayed silent.

Soon after, Jack Abbott divorced Patty, and he fought with his sister, Ashley, for control of Jabot. Jack’s personal life was also in shambles. His lover, Diane Jenkins, accepted a marriage proposal from Andy Richards. Jack’s turned to his young step-mom, Jill Foster Abbott, for sexual comfort. Jill, however, was so jealous of Jack’s lingering feelings for Diane that she constantly fought with him. Anxious to patch things up with Jill, Jack followed her to a remote cabin. During a heavy snowstorm, they were temporarily stranded. Their lovemaking at the cabin was captured on film by Lindsay Wells, a former lover of Jack’s. Lindsay blackmailed Jill and Jack. And Jill discovered that she was pregnant, but she miscarried. John Abbott was so irate by his wife’s behavior that he resumed seeing his first wife, Dina.

In order to obtain the incriminating photos that Lindsay took, Jack arranged to marry her in a fake ceremony. But Lindsay discovered Jack’s scheme and sold the photos to Katherine Chancellor. Jill was so worried that Katherine would share the photos with her husband, John, that she vowed to finally destroy her longtime nemesis.

Ashley stopped seeing Eric Garrison and fell for Marc Mergeron, who turned out to be her mother’s stepson. But Ashley eventually broke it off with Marc because he was too dominating. Marc became briefly involved with Jill. And Victor decided to take advantage of the tension between the Abbotts.

Paul Williams fell for Lauren Fenmore after he caught her shoplifting. Their romance caused Lauren to lose interest in Danny. Paul and Lauren married, but Lauren continued to perform with Danny Romalotti’s rock band. After the marriage, Lauren befriended Shawn Garrett, who introduced himself to her as her biggest fan.

Dina Abbott Mergerson’s former lover, Brent Davis, returned to Genoa City.

Traci Abbott recovered from her diet pill addiction. Soon after, she fell in love with her college instructor, Tim Sullivan. She became pregnant, but when she decided to break the news to Tim, she found him in bed with another woman. Feeling distraught and alone, Traci attempted suicide. Traci’s life was saved by Cricket Blair, a teen model. Traci’s friend, Danny, agreed to marry her so that the baby would be legitimate. The marriage upset Patty, who had fallen for Danny. Worried that Danny would eventually develop feelings for Traci, Patty left town. Meanwhile, Tim discovered that Traci was pregnant and tried to reconcile with her.

Amy Lewis developed a friendship with Jazz Jackson, much to the disapproval of her dad. When Jazz’s brother, Tyrone, arrived in Genoa City, Amy immediately found herself attracted to the young, black law school student. The mob, who was anxious to have Jazz working for them again, utilized a devious scheme that endangered both Tyrone’s and Jazz’s lives.

Major plots

Patty shoots Jack

The consequences of Jack Abbott’s disastrous marriage to Patty Williams dominated the beginning of the season.

Patty discovered that Jack had continued his affair with Diane Jenkins and had married her partly to convince John that he was mature enough to become president of Jabot. Already traumatised by her miscarriage, Patty confronted Jack with a gun.

Jack tried to stop Patty from killing herself and told her to shoot him instead. She shot him three times. Jack survived but was temporarily paralysed.

Patty initially repressed her memory of the shooting. Carl Williams investigated the case and suspected several other people, including Jill. Jack eventually protected Patty by refusing to press charges, but their marriage could not be repaired. Patty Williams’s early storyline

Jack’s struggle for control of Jabot

Jack continued trying to prove that he was capable of succeeding John as the head of Jabot Cosmetics. His ambition created conflict with John, Jill and the rest of the Abbott family.

The shooting temporarily weakened Jack both physically and professionally. Nevertheless, he remained determined to gain control of the company, setting up the long-running struggle over Jabot that would define the Abbott family for decades.

Dina returns to Genoa City

Dina Abbott Mergeron made her first appearance on April 22, 1983. She returned to Genoa City after years away from John and their children.

Her arrival reopened the emotional wounds caused by her abandonment of Jack, Ashley and Traci. Jack was particularly hostile, while Ashley was more willing to rebuild a relationship with her mother. Dina’s presence also complicated John’s marriage to Jill.

Marla Adams began her original regular run as Dina on April 22, 1983. Dina Abbott Mergeron’s introduction

Jill versus the Abbott children

Jill’s marriage to John placed her at the centre of the Abbott family, but Jack strongly opposed the relationship and suspected that Jill was primarily interested in John’s money and position.

Ashley and Traci also struggled with Jill’s presence in their father’s life. Dina’s return made the situation even more volatile, leaving John caught between his current wife, his former wife and his children.

Jill & Jack

Lindsey Wells’s Blackmail Storyline

November 1983: Jack Abbott and his stepmother, Jill Foster Abbott, were stranded in a mountain cabin during a snowstorm and had a one-night stand. A disguised Lindsey Wells secretly photographed them together. The precise airdate is not documented.

January 19, 1984: Lindsey made her first identified appearance. She revealed that she possessed the incriminating photographs and began blackmailing Jack and Jill, demanding money and professional advantages at Jabot in exchange for her silence.

Traci, Lauren and the bullying storyline

Lauren Fenmore became Traci Abbott’s principal rival. Confident, glamorous and often cruel, Lauren repeatedly mocked Traci’s weight and insecurity.

Traci was attracted to Danny Romalotti, while Lauren also wanted Danny’s attention. Their rivalry extended into singing, modelling and social status.

The storyline became increasingly serious as Traci’s low self-esteem left her vulnerable to college professor Tim Sullivan. Tracey E. Bregman later recalled that Lauren’s treatment of Traci produced an extraordinarily hostile reaction from viewers. Tracey E. Bregman on the storyline

Traci’s pregnancy

Traci became involved with her college professor, Tim Sullivan, and became pregnant.

Tim had no intention of building a life with her. Danny, who cared deeply for Traci, offered to marry her and give the baby his name. The pregnancy and proposed marriage led into the 1984 storyline in which Traci miscarried and her relationship with Danny ended.

Depending on the anniversary-season cut-off used, portions of the wedding and miscarriage storyline may be classified as either the end of Season 11 or the beginning of Season 12.

Danny, Patty and Traci

Following the collapse of Patty’s marriage, she renewed her relationship with Danny. However, Danny felt responsible for helping the pregnant Traci.

Danny’s decision to support Traci devastated Patty. The situation contributed to Patty’s decision to leave Genoa City and brought her original storyline to an end.

The teen set expands

The programme developed a new group of younger characters around Danny, Lauren and Traci:

  • Christine “Cricket” Blair;
  • Amy Lewis;
  • Lauren Fenmore;
  • Traci Abbott.

Cricket was introduced as a teenage model on July 15, 1983. Amy subsequently became part of the group as a friend and singer. Their arrival helped establish the teen-oriented stories that became increasingly prominent during the mid-1980s. Christine Blair’s introduction

Victor and Nikki

Victor and Nikki continued their intense but difficult relationship while raising their infant daughter, Victoria.

Victor remained controlling and emotionally guarded, while Nikki wanted security and a formal commitment. Their story moved steadily toward their first marriage, which took place in the following anniversary season, in April 1984.

Paul and the Bancroft storyline

Paul Williams became involved in the troubled Bancroft family story, principally through Allison and Kevin Bancroft.

The storyline drew Paul further into investigative work and continued his evolution from a rebellious young character into Genoa City’s principal private investigator.

Births

No confirmed live birth of a major character occurred during Season 11.

Victoria Newman, born on November 17, 1982, was already an infant during this season.

Pregnancies and miscarriages

  • Traci Abbott became pregnant by Tim Sullivan.
  • Her pregnancy led Danny Romalotti to offer to marry her and raise the child as his own.
  • Traci subsequently miscarried, although surviving summaries disagree over whether the relevant episodes aired immediately before or just after the March 1984 anniversary boundary.

Recasts and SORAS

Jill Foster Abbott

  • Deborah Adair played Jill during the early part of the season.
  • Brenda Dickson returned to the role in 1983.
  • This was an adult recast, not a SORAS.

Dickson had originated the role in 1973 before leaving in 1980. Her return re-established her as Jill for the remainder of the character’s major 1980s storylines.

Patty Williams Abbott

  • Lilibet Stern played Patty at the beginning of the season.
  • Andrea Evans assumed the role in 1983.
  • This was an adult recast, not a SORAS.

Evans played Patty through the conclusion of the character’s original storyline in 1984.

Phillip Chancellor III

  • Phillip continued to be portrayed by Jimmy Keegan.
  • His earlier reintroduction as an older child represented a mild SORAS, but no further major age jump occurred during Season 11.

Victoria Newman

  • Victoria was portrayed by unidentified infant performers.
  • The surviving credits do not consistently preserve the babies’ names.
  • No SORAS occurred during this season.

No major SORAS

Season 11 featured important recasts, but no firmly documented instance of a young child suddenly being replaced by a teenage or adult performer.

New characters

  • Dina Abbott Mergeron — April 22, 1983, portrayed by Marla Adams.
  • Christine “Cricket” Blair — July 15, 1983, portrayed by Lauralee Bell.
  • Amy Lewis — 1983, portrayed by Stephanie E. Williams.
  • Tim Sullivan — 1983, Traci’s college professor and the biological father of her unborn child.

Departures

  • Andy Richards — 1983: Steven Ford concluded his original run.
  • Allison Bancroft — 1984: Lynn Wood’s storyline ended.
  • Kevin Bancroft — 1984: Christopher Holder left when the Bancroft story concluded.
  • Patty Williams Abbott — 1984: Andrea Evans left after Patty’s marriage and relationship with Danny both collapsed.
  • Tim Sullivan — 1984: Traci’s professor disappeared from the story after abandoning her.
  • Douglas Austin — approximately 1983–1984: the character’s storyline with Julia Newman came to an end.

Returns

  • Dina Abbott Mergeron returned to Genoa City within the story, although April 22, 1983 was the character’s first on-screen appearance.
  • Brenda Dickson returned as Jill Foster Abbott in 1983 after having originated the role from 1973 to 1980.
  • Eve Howard may have appeared briefly in transitional episodes, but the surviving credits are not strong enough to confirm a substantial Season 11 return.

No other major established character made a documented long-term comeback during the season.

Marriages

Danny Romalotti and Traci Abbott

Danny agreed to marry the pregnant Traci so that her baby would have a father and the Romalotti name.

The marriage is generally dated to 1984, but the precise episode date is not securely preserved in accessible records. Some anniversary-based classifications place it at the very end of Season 11; others place it at the beginning of Season 12. The marriage was short-lived and was annulled after Traci miscarried. Danny Romalotti’s early storyline

No Victor and Nikki wedding yet

Victor and Nikki did not marry during the strict March 1983–March 1984 period. Their first wedding took place in April 1984, shortly after Season 11’s anniversary cut-off.

Deaths

No major established character is conclusively documented as dying during Season 11.

Traci lost her unborn child through miscarriage, but the exact placement of that event around the Season 11–12 boundary remains uncertain.

Season significance

Season 11 completed the programme’s transition away from the original Brooks and Foster families. The Abbotts, Newmans and Williamses were now firmly established as the central families.

The season also introduced three characters with particularly important long-term legacies:

  • Dina Abbott Mergeron;
  • Christine “Cricket” Blair;
  • Amy Lewis.

Alongside Lauren and Traci, Cricket and Amy created a younger generation of characters who would drive many of the programme’s musical, romantic and socially focused stories throughout the 1980s.

Nikki resumed stripping at The Bayou, which was hurting for business. Her husband, Kevin was outraged, but Nikki continued stripping. Fed up with the tension in her marriage, Nikki turned to Rick Daros. While Kevin and Nikki were in the midst of divorce proceedings, Kevin befriended Julia. Kevin’s mom, Alison, arranged to have Nikki’s striptease act photographed and spliced into a porn film, hoping that it would cause Nikki to lose custody of Victoria at the divorce hearing.

Jill scheme to steal her husband John’s money included bugging Jack’s office. When Jack was in the midst of an intimate encounter with Diane, Jill phoned his pregnant wife, Patti, and suggested that she pay a surprise visit to her husband at work. Patti saw Jack and Diane making love. She was so distraught that she rushed out of the office and collapsed. Patti was rushed to the hospital, where she miscarried. Jack’s dirty deeds continued when he tried to replace Ashley’s boyfriend, Brian, at Jabot with Eric Garrison. Later, Ashley and Jack were stunned to discover that the mystery woman who was trying to buy Jabot was their mother, Dina. After Patti recovered from her miscarriage, Jack resumed his affair with Diana. When Patti overheard Jack making plans to have a vasectomy, she showed up at his office with a gun and threatened to shoot herself. Instead, Patti got caught up in the heat of the moment and shot Jack. At the hospital, doctors removed two bullets from Jack’s chest. But a third bullet paralyzed him. Meanwhile, Patti wiped the incident from her mind. A subsequent surgery enabled Jack to walk again. During Jack’s absence from Jabot, John appointed Ashley president. She was so good that, when Jack returned to work, John kept Ashley as president.

Consumed with stress because of her faltering marriage, Patti began seeing a therapist. At the therapist’s suggestion, Jack agreed to help reenact the stress that triggered Patti’s blackout. When the reenactment takes place, Patti suddenly recalled that she had shot Jack and her reasons for doing so. Soon after, Patti divorced Jack and left town.

The Abbotts were thrown into turmoil when John suffered a heart attack. However, he recovered. In an effort to keep John interested in their marriage, Jill pretended that she was pregnant. Soon after, she and Jack ended up spending the night at a remote cabin and making love during a snowstorm. A stranger stood outside the cabin’s window, snapping photographs of the couple.

Paul Williams worked to clear his father, Carl, of criminal charges when Carl was set up by the mob, who resented the police detective’s efforts to smash their syndicate. Paul’s involvement with Cindy, a reformed prostitute, also nearly destroyed his family. Paul was forced into hiding by the mob. To lure Paul out, they kidnapped his mom, Mary. Fortunately, Paul and Carl rescued Mary and the mob was put behind bars–with the exception of Tony DiSalvo. The charges against Carl were dropped. Nikki agreed to marry DiSalvo, the mobster who had possession of the steamy flick that Alison had created, when he promised to destroy the tape. Paul and Andy rescued Nikki before the wedding ceremony could take place. DiSalvo was so angry that he tried to shoot Paul, but Cindy shielded Paul’s body and took the bullet instead. Before DiSalvo could fire another shot, Jazz, a friend of Paul’s, shot and killed the mobster.

Nikki’s problems continued when Alison kidnapped Victoria and fled the country. Rick tracked Alison down in England and told her to return Victoria. He revealed that Kevin wasn’t the baby’s father. Victor was. After Rick returned Victoria to Nikki, their relationship picked up steam. Victor watched as their romance continued to grow, but he resisted telling Nikki that he knew he was Victoria’s real father.

Eve and her friend Max concocted a diabolical plot to poison Victor. Julia overheard a smidgen of their plan on the phone and warned Victor that he was in danger. Julia suspected that Eve was involved in the poisoning, and eventually she proved it by having the poison that Eve administered to Victor analyzed. An antidote was found and Victor regained his health. He realized that Eve had tried to poison him so that her son, whom she believed Victor had fathered, could inherit half of his wealth. To punish Eve, Victor pretended to be dead. When Julia confided to Eve that she thought Victor was murdered, and that she wanted to exhume his body for an autopsy, Eve sent Max to the graveyard to dig up the corpse. At the cemetery, Max was so shocked to see Victor alive that he fell against a pitchfork and died. Eve was carted off to the loony bin.

Ashley broke off her romance with Brian and began seeing Eric Garrison, who was also involved with Dina. Eventually, Eric ended his affair with Dina and proposed marriage to Ashley. Dina offered to help with the wedding plans. When Eric’s possessions arrived from Paris, Dina made sure that Ashley saw a portrait of her mother that Eric had painted. On the back was an inscription, ‘All my love, Eric.’ Ashley was mortified to discover that Dina and Eric were lovers.

Ashley’s sister, Traci, struggled to lose weight so that she could win Danny’s heart. But Lauren Fenmore, who was also interested in Danny, did her best to undermine Traci’s confidence. As a last resort, Traci turned to diet pills. While Traci was under the influence of the pills, she had a car accident and was rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile, Lauren was jealous of the concern that Danny showed the seriously injured Traci. At the hospital, Traci went into convulsions.

Major plots

Jack, Patty and Diane

Jack Abbott married Patty Williams in June 1982, largely to convince John that he had become responsible enough to run Jabot. The marriage was compromised from the beginning because Jack continued his affair with Diane Jenkins.

After catching Jack and Diane together, Patty fell and suffered a miscarriage. She later overheard Jack admit that he had married her partly to improve his position at Jabot and that he was considering a vasectomy. Emotionally devastated, Patty confronted him with a gun and shot Jack three times.

Jack survived but was temporarily paralysed. Patty initially blocked out her memory of the shooting, while her father, Detective Carl Williams, investigated the crime and suspected Jill. Jack eventually protected Patty by refusing to press charges. Their marriage nevertheless disintegrated. Patty Williams character history

The expansion of the Abbott family

Season 10 greatly expanded the Abbott family:

  • Dina Abbott Mergeron, John’s estranged first wife, returned to Genoa City.
  • Ashley Abbott was introduced as John and Dina’s sophisticated daughter.
  • Traci Abbott was introduced as their shy, insecure younger daughter.
  • Marc Mergeron, Dina’s son from her later marriage, also appeared.

Dina’s return reopened the wounds caused by her abandonment of John and their children. It also complicated John’s relationship with Jill.

John and Jill

John Abbott became increasingly involved with Jill Foster. Their relationship was opposed by Jack, who distrusted Jill and feared that she would gain influence over John and Jabot.

John and Jill married during this period, making Jill the stepmother of Jack, Ashley and Traci. The marriage intensified the hostility between Jill and Jack and established one of the show’s defining family conflicts of the 1980s.

Victor, Nikki and Julia

Victor Newman’s marriage to Julia finally collapsed. Julia became involved with Douglas Austin, while Victor’s relationship with Nikki Reed grew much more serious.

Nikki became pregnant with Victor’s child. The storyline culminated in the birth of Victoria Nicole Newman, establishing the next generation of the Newman family.

Paul, Cindy and the crime story

Paul Williams became involved with Cindy Lake, a troubled young woman connected to an increasingly dangerous criminal storyline. Paul attempted to protect her while working through the truth about the people manipulating her.

The plot reinforced Paul’s gradual transformation from the rebellious young man of his earliest appearances into one of Genoa City’s principal investigators and romantic heroes.

Danny, Patty and Traci

Danny Romalotti remained emotionally connected to Patty after the collapse of her marriage. At the same time, Traci developed feelings for Danny.

This triangle laid the foundations for the following season’s story, in which Danny would marry a pregnant Traci to give her baby a name—even though he was not the child’s biological father.

Lauren and Traci

Lauren Fenmore arrived near the end of the season as a confident, privileged teenager. She quickly became Traci’s rival and began ridiculing her appearance and weight.

The rivalry developed more fully after March 1983 and became one of the programme’s best-known school-age storylines. Tracey E. Bregman has played Lauren since 1983. Tracey E. Bregman’s cast history

Births

  • Victoria Nicole Newman — November 17, 1982
Daughter of Victor Newman and Nikki Reed.

No other live birth can be firmly documented during the season.

Pregnancies and miscarriages

  • Patty Williams Abbott became pregnant by Jack Abbott but miscarried after discovering Jack with Diane Jenkins.
  • The precise broadcast date of the miscarriage is not consistently preserved in public episode records.
  • Traci Abbott’s first pregnancy belongs primarily to the subsequent storyline and should not be counted as a Season 10 birth.

Recasts and SORAS

Phillip Chancellor III

  • Jimmy Keegan assumed the role in 1983.
  • Phillip, previously portrayed as a young child, was now played as an older boy.
  • This represents a modest early SORAS, although not yet the major teenage recast that occurred later in the decade.

No major adult SORAS

There was no clear example during Season 10 of a small child being immediately replaced by a fully adult performer. The most important casting changes were the introductions of previously unseen adult Abbott children rather than conventional on-screen recasts.

Victoria Newman

  • Victoria was born during the season and was initially portrayed by unidentified or uncredited infants.
  • This was not yet a SORAS. Her major childhood and teenage recasts occurred years later.

New characters

Exact first-air dates are unavailable for several introductions.

  • Dina Abbott Mergeron — 1982, portrayed by Marla Adams.
  • Ashley Abbott — June 1982, portrayed by Eileen Davidson.
  • Traci Abbott — 1982, portrayed by Beth Maitland.
  • Marc Mergeron — 1982, portrayed by John Saxon.
  • Brian Forbes — 1982, portrayed by Jay Kerr.
  • Cindy Lake — 1982, portrayed by DeAnna Robbins.
  • Tony DiSalvo — early 1983, portrayed by Michael Corbett.
  • Amy Lewis — 1983, portrayed by Stephanie E. Williams.
  • Lauren Fenmore — January 1983, portrayed by Tracey E. Bregman.
  • Allison Bancroft — 1983, portrayed by Lynn Wood.
  • Kevin Bancroft — 1983, portrayed by Christopher Holder.
  • Phillip Chancellor III — 1983 in his Jimmy Keegan incarnation.
  • Victoria Newman — November 17, 1982, initially portrayed by uncredited infants.

Departures

  • Chris Brooks Foster — 1982: Lynne Topping ended her regular run.
  • Snapper Foster — 1982: David Hasselhoff left the programme.
  • Leslie Brooks Prentiss — 1982: Victoria Mallory concluded her original regular run.
  • Julia Newman — 1982: Meg Bennett left after Julia’s marriage to Victor ended.
  • Patty Williams Abbott — 1983: Lilibet Stern left the role near the end of her original run; Andrea Evans succeeded her later in 1983.
  • Brian Forbes — 1983: Jay Kerr’s short-term storyline concluded.
  • Cindy Lake — 1983: DeAnna Robbins departed after the conclusion of Cindy’s storyline.

These exits marked the near-complete disappearance of the original Brooks and Foster families as the Abbotts, Newmans and Williamses became the programme’s central families.

Returns

  • Dina Abbott Mergeron arrived in Genoa City in 1982 after years away from John and their children. It was her first on-screen appearance, but narratively a return to her family.
  • Eve Howard resurfaced as part of the continuing Newman-related drama.
  • Stuart Brooks continued to make appearances during the final phase of the Brooks family’s presence.
  • Liz Foster appeared intermittently as the Foster family was gradually phased out.

No major previously established character made a clearly documented long-term comeback comparable to later soap returns.

Marriages

  • Jack Abbott and Patty Williams — June 1982.
Jack married Patty partly to demonstrate his maturity to John. The marriage rapidly collapsed because of Jack’s affair with Diane and Patty’s emotional breakdown.
  • John Abbott and Jill Foster — 1982.
Their marriage made Jill part of the Abbott family and deepened her conflict with Jack.

Some reference sources assign slightly different broadcast weeks to the John–Jill wedding, but all place it within the 1982 portion of the season.

Deaths

No major regular character died during Season 10.

The season included a miscarriage—Patty and Jack’s unborn child—but no firmly documented on-screen death of an established contract character.

Season significance

Season 10 was one of the most important transitional years in the programme’s history. The Brooks and Foster families, who had dominated Y&R since 1973, were largely phased out. In their place, the series consolidated the three families that would define its future:

  • the Abbotts;
  • the Newmans;
  • the Williamses.

The introductions of Ashley, Traci, Dina and Lauren—and the birth of Victoria—made 1982–1983 a particularly consequential season for the show’s long-term mythology.

In 1982, Jill became romantically involved with Andy Richards, a handsome physical education instructor. But the more Jill got to know Andy, the more she wanted to change him. Not to content live on the wages that Andy earned, Jill urged him to consider taking a more lucrative job. When Andy proposed marriage, Jill reluctantly agreed. However, she was aghast when Andy suggested that they live in her mother’s old house to save on expenses.

To Jill’s surprise, John Abbott returned to Genoa City. John’s return was influenced by his desire to see how his son, Jack, was doing at running Jabot. To Jack’s disappointment, John announced that he wanted to resume an active role in running the company. Meanwhile, Jill decided that it was time she cleared things up with John about the night that he found her in bed with Jack. She arranged to meet with John and offered her explanation, but John had difficulty accepting it. Eventually, John gave in to Jill’s charms and spent time with her. Jill also began working at Jabot again.

By spring, John’s two daughters, Ashley and Traci, had moved back to Genoa City. Ashley took a job at Jabot, where she butted heads with Jack over his way of doing business. Concerned that people would think that she got the job because her father owned the company, Ashley worked under the name “Susan Ashley” in the lab, where she helped develop new fragrances for Jabot. Ashley became romantically involved with her co-worker, Brian. When Brian learned from Jack that Ashley was his sister, he angrily accused her of spying on him. However, they managed to clear things up and resumed their romance. Meanwhile, Traci struggled to overcome a weight problem and developed a crush on pop singer Danny Romalotti. Neither girl was particularly impressed by Jill and questioned her motives for seeing their father.

As John’s romance with Jill heated up, Andy saw the writing on the wall and stepped aside. When John proposed marriage to Jill, Jack tried to destroy that relationship by revealing that Jill had a young son, Phillip. John was surprised that Jill had withheld this information from her, but after meeting Phillip, John told Jill that he was still anxious to marry her. The ceremony was held in the Abbott house, with the disapproving Abbott children in attendance.

To the Williams’ horror, their teenage daughter Patty became involved with Jack. When Carl tried to break up their romance, a vengeful Jack retaliated by marrying Patty. Over time, Patty became disenchanted with the marriage and questioned if Jack was only interested in her for sex. Behind Patty’s back, Jack continued to see Diane Jenkins, a long-time girlfriend. At Jabot, Jack also hired Victor’s ex-wife, Julia, to succeed Chris Foster as the company’s new model, which enraged Diane because Jack had promised to appoint her the news Jabot model.

Lorie hired Robert Laurence to be her attorney and he waged a fierce battle to clear her of killing Vanessa. The tension created by the trial slowly caused Lorie and Lance’s romance to erode. Eventually, Vanessa’s diary turned up, which contained information about her plan to frame Lorie. Although Lorie regained her freedom, she lost Lance, who decided to rebuild his life away from Genoa City. Lori’s other sister, Chris, packed her bags, too, when her husband, Snapper, accepted a doctor’s position at a hospital in another state.

Soon after her trial, Lorie began seeing Victor Newman, which troubled Nikki, who felt inferior around the sophisticated and poised best-selling novelist. Even though Nikki was wildly attracted to Victor, he made it clear that their relationship was strictly platonic. Nikki, however, believed otherwise, even after Victor and Lori became romantically involved. When Victor proposed marriage to Lorie, she accepted. Before the ceremony, Victor handed Lorie a document that gave her control of Prentiss Industries. Shortly before the wedding ceremony, Victor searched for Lorie, who had suddenly disappeared. Instead, he found a letter from Lorie, informing him that she wasn’t interested in marrying him. Left behind with the letter was Victor’s engagement ring. Lorie packed her bags and arranged a meeting with Lucas before leaving town. To Lucas’s s surprise, Lorie announced that she had won control of Prentiss Industries from Victor and was returning the company to Lance.

With Lorie out of the picture, Nikki’s hopes of becoming involved with Victor were revived. Victor tried to discourage Nikki’s attraction by arranging for her to date someone closer to her own age, a young man named Kevin Bancroft. Nikki reluctantly agreed to see Kevin, but her feelings for Victor continued. Victor and Nikki eventually gave in to their mutual attraction and slept together. But afterward, Victor insisted that it wouldn’t happen again.

When Nikki discovered that she was pregnant, she claimed that Kevin was the father. Kevin, who considered himself an honorable man, proposed marriage to Nikki and she accepted. Their relationship was complicated by Kevin’s mom, Alison, who strongly disapproved of Nikki. In order to break Nikki and Kevin up, Alison arranged for Kevin’s former girlfriend, Caroline Harper, to come to Genoa City. After Kevin was injured in a car accident, Nikki, who felt responsible for the accident, stepped aside and opened the door for Kevin to become involved with Caroline again. Meanwhile, both Kevin and Victor learned that Nikki was pregnant with Victor’s baby, but both had difficulty accepting the truth. When Victor suggested to Nikki that she might benefit from spending time in a mental institution, Nikki disappeared. Eventually, Victor was able to locate Nikki and she returned to Genoa City.

Lorie’s sister Leslie became involved with Robert, which irritated his teenage daughter, Angela. For several years, Robert had led Angela to believe that her mother, Claire, was dead. But Claire was actually in a coma and tucked away at an institution. To Robert’s surprise, Claire’s doctor found a medical treatment that was able to help Claire regain consciousness and return home. Leslie was disappointed when Robert arranged for Claire to live with him. In order to help Claire’s recovery, Leslie broke off her romance with Robert.

Tony DiSalvo, a mobster, swore revenge against Carl Williams for having him arrested. Tony made it look as if Carl was accepting bribes from the mob. While Carl was on suspension from the police force, his son, Paul, worked behind the scenes to clear Carl’s name. Paul eventually infiltrated the mob. Paul also became involved with a young woman named Pam, who had played a role in framing his father, but Paul was actually in love with Cindy Lake, a vulnerable, young prostitute who assisted him in learning about the mob’s illicit activities.

Danny’s sister, Gina Romalotti, a petty criminal, surfaced in Genoa City after she had served her prison sentence. At first, Danny was reluctant to see his sister, but eventually he mended fences with her. He also arranged for Gina to secure a job singing at Jonas’ place.

The Young and the Restless Season 9

Original run: March 26, 1981 – March 25, 1982
Estimated episode count: approximately 250 episodes

A note about the episode count: CBS did not originally organise the programme into numbered seasons in the modern sense. The “season” divisions used today are retrospective and begin on the anniversary of the series’ premiere. No reliable CBS archive gives a definitive season-nine total. IMDb identifies episode #2194 as airing on October 30, 1981, which confirms the general numbering during this period, but several pre-empted broadcasts make a simple weekday calculation unreliable. Therefore, “approximately 250 episodes” is more accurate than presenting an unverified exact figure. IMDb episode #2194

The closest verified period photograph is the official 1982 cast portrait, taken during the final months of Season 9 or immediately after it. There does not appear to be a surviving CBS photograph specifically labelled “Season 9 cast.”

Major storylines

Victor, Julia and Michael: the bomb-shelter storyline

Julia Newman became increasingly unhappy in her controlling marriage to Victor. She found professional and emotional fulfilment working as a model for photographer Michael Scott, and their friendship developed into an affair.

When Julia became pregnant, Victor—who had secretly undergone a vasectomy—assumed that Michael was the father. He abducted Michael and imprisoned him in the bomb shelter beneath the Newman Ranch. Victor installed cameras and used them to observe and psychologically torment his prisoner.

Paul Williams was employed to deliver food to Michael, having been told that the prisoner was a dangerous relative. Paul eventually became suspicious. Julia discovered the truth and helped free Michael. During the confrontation, Julia fell down a staircase and miscarried.

Tests subsequently established that Victor, despite the vasectomy, had been the baby’s biological father. The revelation destroyed the Newman marriage. Julia and Michael ultimately left Genoa City separately. This storyline marked Victor’s transformation from a comparatively short-term villain into the programme’s central, psychologically complex antihero. Character history

Victor and Nikki grow closer

Nikki Reed remained involved with the respectable but comparatively dull Kevin Bancroft, while becoming increasingly fascinated by Victor. Victor was equally drawn to her, even though he frequently judged her background and behaviour.

Nikki worked as a stripper at The Bayou, where Victor secretly watched her perform. Their attraction established the foundation of the Victor–Nikki relationship, although they did not marry during this season.

Nikki’s relationship with Kevin was undermined by her feelings for Victor and by the interference of Kevin’s mother, Charlotte Ramsey.

Vanessa Prentiss frames Lorie

Vanessa learned that she was terminally ill but continued her campaign against Lorie Brooks. She knew that Lance, not Lucas, was the biological father of Leslie’s son Brooks, and recorded the secret in her journal.

Still determined to remove Lorie from her sons’ lives, Vanessa forged a hostile letter and staged evidence that would implicate Lorie. She then deliberately fell from a balcony, intending her death to look like murder.

Lorie was accused of killing Vanessa, creating the season’s principal murder investigation and courtroom storyline. Vanessa’s journal and her increasingly elaborate deceptions eventually became crucial to exposing the truth. Vanessa’s death ended K. T. Stevens’s five-year run in the role. Vanessa Prentiss history

Leslie’s breakdown and the “Priscilla” storyline

After learning that Lance was Brooks’s biological father, Leslie suffered another severe emotional collapse. She disappeared and developed amnesia, living under the name Priscilla.

She became involved with Jonas, a bar owner, without remembering her marriages or her family. Lucas later encountered her during a politically charged adventure involving the fictional country of San Leandro. Leslie returned to Genoa City but remained emotionally confused when confronted by Lorie, Lucas and her former identity.

The storyline began the final phase of the Brooks–Prentiss era, which would conclude during 1982.

Jack Abbott establishes himself at Jabot

Jack became increasingly important within the Abbott family and at Jabot Cosmetics. Ambitious, charming and sexually predatory, he frequently clashed with his father, John.

His growing relationship with Patty Williams connected the newly introduced Abbott family to the established Williams family. Their romance would become much darker in the following season, when Jack’s infidelity and Patty’s pregnancy led to marriage, an abortion crisis and Patty shooting Jack.

Paul Williams and Andy Richards

Paul continued establishing himself as a private investigator. Andy Richards became his friend and professional associate, forming the early version of the Paul-and-Andy detective partnership that would remain important throughout the 1980s.

Katherine, Jill and the Chancellor household

Katherine and Jill’s rivalry continued, although the most famous stage of their feud was still to come. Jill remained socially ambitious and determined to improve her position. Katherine struggled with loneliness, family tensions and her complicated relationships with Brock, Douglas Austin and the people surrounding the Chancellor estate.

Births

No confirmed on-screen live births

No major child is known to have been born on screen during Season 9.

Pregnancy ending in miscarriage

  • Julia Newman’s unborn child
    • Parents: Julia Newman and Victor Newman
    • Outcome: Miscarriage following Julia’s fall during Michael Scott’s escape.
    • Victor initially believed Michael was the father, but medical evidence established that Victor had fathered the child despite his vasectomy.
    • The exact broadcast date of the miscarriage has not been reliably preserved in publicly accessible episode records.

Recasts and SORAS changes

Jill Foster Abbott

  • Deborah Adair continued as Jill, having replaced Bond Gideon in 1980.
  • This was not a Season 9 recast, but Adair was still relatively new in the role and became the principal Jill of this period.
  • Brenda Dickson would return in 1983.

John Abbott

  • Brett Halsey played John during the early Abbott-family period.
  • Jerry Douglas assumed the role in 1982.
  • Available sources disagree on the exact transition date, so it may fall either at the very end of Season 9 or early in Season 10.

Patty Williams

  • Lilibet Stern played Patty during Season 9.
  • Andrea Evans took over in 1982, around the transition between Seasons 9 and 10.
  • This was a conventional recast, not a SORAS.

Brooks Prentiss

  • Leslie’s son remained a young child.
  • No clearly documented SORAS occurred during Season 9, and early child performers were often uncredited.

Cole Howard

  • Eve Howard’s son was still a child and appeared only sparingly.
  • There was no adult SORAS during this season. Cole would not return as an adult until the 1990s.

SORAS summary

No major, firmly documented child-to-adult SORAS occurred during Season 9. The adult Abbott siblings introduced in 1982 were presented as previously unseen members of the family, rather than as on-screen children who were suddenly aged.

  • Eve left Genoa City after Victor arranged financial support for her son Cole and persuaded her to stay away.
  • Her appearances were intermittent, making an exact final Season 9 date difficult to establish.

Lance, Lucas, Leslie and Lorie

The Prentiss brothers and Brooks sisters were still central during Season 9. Their definitive departures occurred across 1982, around the end of Season 9 and during Season 10, rather than in one collective exit.

Returns

  • Lance Prentiss — Dennis Cole
    • Lance returned after time away from Genoa City and again became involved with Lorie, Leslie and Vanessa.
    • His return reignited the paternity secret concerning Brooks.
  • Eve Howard — Margaret Mason
    • Eve resurfaced during the Victor–Julia crisis and attempted to re-establish a place in Victor’s life.
  • Brock Reynolds — Beau Kazer
    • Brock continued to appear intermittently rather than returning as a permanent full-time character.
  • Peggy Brooks — Pamela Peters Solow
    • Peggy made limited family-related appearances after her period as a central character had ended.

Marriages and divorces

Nikki Reed and Kevin Bancroft

Nikki and Kevin’s relationship reached the engagement or marriage stage during this general period, but surviving summaries conflict over whether their legal wedding belongs to late 1981 or 1982. Their union was brief and was undermined by Nikki’s feelings for Victor and Charlotte Ramsey’s disapproval.

For that reason, an exact wedding date should not be stated without access to CBS’s original daily scripts.

Victor and Julia Newman

  • Their marriage collapsed following Julia’s affair with Michael, Michael’s imprisonment and Julia’s miscarriage.
  • Their divorce belongs to the 1981–82 period, although an exact airdate is not reliably documented.

Leslie Brooks and Lucas Prentiss

  • Their marriage ended in divorce by 1981.
  • Leslie’s feelings for Lance and the revelation about Brooks’s paternity contributed to the breakdown. Leslie and Lucas history

No other major wedding can be firmly placed within Season 9

Jack and Patty’s marriage, one of the major Abbott–Williams events of the period, occurred later, after Patty became pregnant.

Deaths

Vanessa Prentiss

  • Date: 1981; exact episode date not securely documented online.
  • Cause: Fatal fall from a balcony.
  • Circumstances: Suicide staged to implicate Lorie Brooks in her murder.
  • Performer: K. T. Stevens.

Julia Newman’s unborn child

  • Date: 1981.
  • Cause: Miscarriage following Julia’s fall during the confrontation in which Michael Scott escaped.
  • The child was ultimately established as Victor’s.

No other major contract character is reliably documented as dying during Season 9.

Season 9 in perspective

Season 9 was a genuine turning point. The Brooks and Foster families—the foundations of the programme since 1973—were slowly being replaced by the Newmans, Abbotts and Williamses.

The season’s three decisive developments were:

  1. Victor Newman becoming the programme’s dominant male character;
  2. the expansion of Jack Abbott and the Abbott family;
  3. the final major Brooks–Prentiss storyline, culminating in Vanessa’s death.

By the beginning of Season 10, the recognisable modern architecture of The Young and the Restless—Newman versus Abbott, with the Williams and Chancellor families between them—was largely in place.

After Julia Newman became pregnant, Victor began taping his wife’s conversations with her lover, Michael Scott. When Victor’s suspicion that Julia and Michael were lovers was confirmed, he trapped Michael in a bomb shelter in the basement of his ranch home. While Michael was being held prisoner, Victor had a monitor installed. Seeing Victor and Julia together in their home on the monitor added to Michael’s torture. Eventually, Julia discovered that Michael was being held hostage. She tried to free him. When Victor intervened, they had a struggle and Julia tumbled down a flight of stairs. She was rushed to the hospital, where she miscarried. Meanwhile, Victor discovered that he had actually fathered Julia’s baby. Soon after, Julia and Michael left town.

After jumping off a cruise ship, Katherine Chancellor ended up on an island, where she was rescued by Felipe. Soon after, she fell in love with Felipe. When Katherine became ill, Felipe arranged for her to be sent to a hospital. She wanted him to move back to Genoa City with her, but Felipe wasn’t interested and sent her a farewell letter. Katherine returned home, where she enjoyed taking revenge against her cheating husband, Derek, before finally ending their marriage.

Greg Foster divorced Nikki. During the divorce, Greg had fallen for April Stevens. But Greg’s feelings for April turned hostile when she revealed that Paul Williams was the father of her daughter, Heather. When Heather became gravely ill, Greg convinced Paul to marry April and be a real father to Heather. Soon after, Heather recovered. Paul assisted April in trying to find her twin sister, who had been given up for adoption years ago. Meanwhile, Nikki took a job at a strip club, run by Cash, who was now dating Katherine Chancellor.

Leslie Prentiss reconciled with Lucas, but she had a difficult time making love with him. Lorie, who was worried about the reconciliation, had an affair with Lucas so that Leslie wouldn’t seek custody of her son Brooks. After tripping over one of Brooks’ toys, Leslie regained her memory and recalled that Lance was the father of her son. Leslie also sold her stock in Prentiss Industries to Victor Newman, who was looking to take control of the profitable company.

On a different front, Vanessa Prentiss learned that she was dying from a terminal illness. Vanessa utilized her last months to mastermind a vicious plot against Lorie. Meanwhile, Vanessa was disappointed when her son, Lucas, announced that he was leaving town because Leslie wasn’t in love with him.

Steve Williams resumed his job at The Chronicle. He also pressured Peggy into marrying him. But she ditched him at the altar. Soon after, both Steve and Peggy left Genoa City, but not together.

Jill fell in love with her boss, John Abbott, who was also attracted to her. They arranged a get-away trip to New Orleans, but at the last minute, John canceled the trip because he wasn’t ready to become involved with another woman. Soon after, a despondent Jill made love with John’s son, Jack. The next day, Jill’s roommate Eve, gave her a letter from John. In the letter, John said that he loved Jill and wanted to be with her. Unfortunately, the night before, John had accidentally stumbled upon Jill in Jack’s bedroom. When Jill discovered that John knew about her indiscretion, she quit her job at Jabot. But after John Abbott left town, Jack rehired her.

Patty Williams fell for Jack Abbott, against her parents’ wishes. But Patty also had a second guy who was interested in her, singer Danny Romalotti, who was closer to her age. Patty was devastated when a jealous Jill revealed that she and Jack had been secret lovers. Jack was so infuriated by Jill’s actions that he fired her from Jabot. When Danny asked Patty for a date, she graciously accepted, hoping that it would help her to forget Jack

After Chris gave birth to a baby girl, Jennifer, she told Snapper that they needed a bigger home. But Snapper was opposed to the idea. Soon after, Snapper’s former girlfriend, Sally McGuire returned to Genoa City with her and Snapper’s son, Chuckie, who was seriously ill. While Chuckie was hospitalized with a kidney problem, Sally realized that she was still attracted to Snapper.

Casey was harassed by a secret stalker, who eventually shifted his sights to Nikki. Meanwhile, Casey accepted a job in another town. Just in time, Nikki discovered that the stalker was her neighbor and friend, Edward. He admitted that he loved Nikki and had tried unsuccessfully to do away with all the men in her life, including Paul, Cash and Andy Richards, whom she had briefly dated. Edward also added that it was their destiny to be together for eternity. Edward was about to blow them both to smithereens with dynamite when Nikki was rescued by Paul.

At Douglas Austin’s urging, Victor paid a visit to The Bayou to watch Nikki perform. Victor was immediately intrigued by Nikki. He returned to watch the show several more times. He also encouraged Douglas to investigate the possibility of buying The Bayou.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS SEASON 8

For our chronology, I am continuing with the anniversary-year system used for Seasons 1–7.

Original U.S. run: March 26, 1980 – March 25, 1981

Season 8 is a genuine transition year. The series is now one hour long, Victor Newman becomes a major character, the Williams family expands, John Abbott and Jabot enter the story, and several characters associated with the original Brooks/Prentiss era begin to disappear.

Episode count

Based on the global numbering we established for Season 7, Season 8 begins with:

Episode #1790 — March 26, 1980

The exact final global number for March 25, 1981 is harder to document from surviving online episode records. Given weekday broadcasts and known pre-emptions, the season contains approximately 255–260 episodes.

For our database, I recommend keeping:

≈258 episodes — beginning with #1790

until we can verify the March 25, 1981 global number from a surviving production/airdate guide. I would rather leave that figure provisional than manufacture an exact total.

Season 8 cast photography

Image

I have not found a CBS archival photograph explicitly catalogued as “The Young and the Restless Season 8 Official Cast Photo.” There are genuine CBS promotional portraits from 1980–81, but calling one an official Season 8 cast photograph would go beyond the evidence.

So for the archive I recommend:

“1980–81 Y&R promotional cast photography”

rather than “official Season 8 cast photo.”

Major plots

Victor and Julia Newman — the marriage begins to collapse

Victor and Julia had arrived just before the beginning of Season 8, on February 8, 1980.

Their marriage quickly becomes one of the show’s central stories.

Victor is controlling, possessive and increasingly absorbed in business. Julia feels neglected and isolated.

Victor is jealous of Julia’s friendship with Brock Reynolds, even though Julia and Brock are not lovers.

Victor retaliates by sleeping with another woman.

And that woman becomes very important.

Eve Howard arrives

Eve Howard — Margaret Mason

First appearance: September 3, 1980

Eve is Victor’s former secretary and former lover.

She comes to Genoa City determined to win Victor.

She also has a young son:

Charles “Cole” Howard — N.P. Schoch

At this point, Eve allows Victor to believe that Cole could be his son.

The character is seen as a child during 1980–81. (Bitter House)

This creates an important piece of Newman mythology that will be resurrected dramatically when adult Cole returns in 1993.

Julia has an affair with Michael Scott

Lonely in her marriage, Julia begins spending time with photographer:

Michael Scott — Nick Benedict

Julia eventually sleeps with Michael.

She becomes pregnant.

Because she has slept with Michael, everyone initially assumes:

Michael is the father.

But Victor has secretly undergone a vasectomy, making the situation even more complicated. Victor becomes violently jealous when he discovers Julia and Michael’s relationship. (Wikipédia)

The pregnancy and its consequences continue into the subsequent chronology.

Victor and Lorie

Victor also becomes involved with:

Lorie Brooks

This is the beginning of one of the most significant bridges between the original Brooks era and the emerging Newman era.

Victor and Lorie become lovers.

The relationship grows increasingly important as Lorie’s marriage to Lance deteriorates.

Victor therefore begins moving from being simply “Julia’s controlling husband” toward becoming a romantic lead in his own right. (Wikipédia)

Nikki and Greg — marriage trouble

Nikki is married to Greg Foster, but the relationship becomes increasingly unhappy.

Nikki’s involvement with Rose DeVille’s prostitution operation continues to haunt her.

Walter Addison had died of a heart attack during his encounter with Nikki, and:

Tony Baker

is accused of killing him.

The enormous problem is that Greg is Tony’s defense attorney.

Nikki knows information that could prove Tony’s innocence, but telling Greg the truth would reveal her involvement with Rose.

Eventually the truth emerges.

The experience contributes heavily to the breakdown of Nikki and Greg’s marriage.

Paul and April — Heather is born

Paul Williams and April Stevens face the consequences of April’s pregnancy.

Paul had initially wanted April to terminate the pregnancy, but April refused.

She gives birth to:

Heather Stevens

Born: 1980

Parents:

Paul Williams + April Stevens

Heather is therefore the first member of the next generation of the Williams family born on screen.

Paul initially struggles with fatherhood, but Heather becomes an important permanent connection between Paul and April. Paul’s character history confirms April as his eventual wife and Heather as their daughter. (Wikipédia)

I have not found a sufficiently reliable surviving episode source to give you an exact 1980 airdate for Heather’s birth, so I would currently record simply:

Heather Stevens — born 1980

rather than inventing a day and month.

The Williams family expands

Season 8 introduces Paul’s family around him.

Mary Williams — Carolyn Conwell

First appearance: March 17, 1980

Mary actually debuts nine days before our Season 8 boundary, so technically she is a very late Season 7 introduction, not a Season 8 newcomer. (Kiwix Server)

During Season 8, however, the Williams family becomes a proper family unit.

We meet:

Carl Williams — Brett Hadley
Paul’s father, a police officer.

Patty Williams — Tammy Taylor / Lilibet Stern
Paul’s younger sister.

Steven Williams — David Winn
Paul’s brother.

Cast records place Carl, Patty and Steven on screen beginning in 1980. (Kiwix Server)

This is another major sign of Y&R’s transformation: the original Brooks/Fosters are gradually being supplemented by the Newmans, Williamses and soon the Abbotts.

Stuart and Liz finally marry

After years of friendship and shared grief, the heads of Y&R’s two original families finally come together.

Stuart Brooks & Liz Foster

Marriage: 1980

Stuart had lost Jennifer to cancer.

Liz had lost Bill.

Their relationship gradually evolved from friendship into love, culminating in marriage during 1980. Character histories consistently list:

Stuart Brooks + Liz Foster: 1980–1984. (Kiwix)

Symbolically, this marriage unites the show’s original two families:

the wealthy Brooks family + the working-class Foster family.

Chris and Snapper have a daughter

Chris and Snapper reconcile and rebuild their marriage.

Chris becomes pregnant and gives birth to:

Jennifer Elizabeth Foster

named in honor of Chris’s late mother, Jennifer Brooks.

The 1980s storyline chronology confirms that Chris gives birth to a daughter during this era. (Teleserial)

Again, I have not found a sufficiently reliable exact episode airdate, so:

Jennifer Foster — born 1980/81

is safer than attaching an unverified day.

Sally McGuire and Chuckie return

Chris and Snapper’s happiness is threatened when:

Sally McGuire

returns to Genoa City.

Sally was Snapper’s former lover and the mother of his son:

Chuckie Roulland

Chuckie becomes seriously ill.

This forces Snapper back into Sally’s orbit and reminds Chris of one of the most painful episodes in their marriage.

The storyline chronology specifically records Sally returning because her and Snapper’s son is very ill. (Teleserial)

The full return belongs around the 1981 portion of this transition, and continues beyond our Season 8 boundary.

Vanessa’s final revenge against Lorie

The Lorie/Lance/Vanessa conflict reaches its darkest point.

Vanessa has spent years trying to destroy Lorie’s relationship with Lance.

Eventually Vanessa takes the ultimate step:

she kills herself and attempts to frame Lorie for her death.

This is not an accidental death.

It is a calculated final act designed to ensure that Lance believes Lorie murdered his mother.

The historical Y&R storyline record explicitly describes Vanessa as killing herself in order to frame Lorie. (Wikipédia)

Vanessa Prentiss — K.T. Stevens

Death: 1980

This ends K.T. Stevens’s memorable 1976–80 run.

Lance and Lorie struggle to survive Vanessa’s schemes

Even after Vanessa’s death, the damage she caused remains.

Lance and Lorie’s marriage is severely strained.

Lance has an affair with Monique, but eventually decides that he wants to save his marriage to Lorie. (Teleserial)

John McCook leaves Y&R during 1980. McCook himself has never returned as Lance, despite later becoming Eric Forrester on B&B. (Soap Hub)

The role of Lance will later be recast with Dennis Cole in 1981.

Leslie, Lucas and Brooks

Leslie returns to Genoa City after her amnesia period.

She has fallen in love with Jonas, the man who helped her while she did not know who she was.

Leslie eventually gives:

Lance and Lorie full custody of Brooks.

She resumes her musical career and continues trying to rebuild her life. (Teleserial)

Her marriage to Lucas deteriorates further and will be over by 1981. Contemporary character history confirms their divorce by that year. (Kiwix)

Katherine and Derek collapse

Katherine’s relationship with Derek deteriorates.

Derek becomes involved with Judy Wilson.

Katherine decides she wants to end the marriage.

But Derek gets Katherine drunk and sleeps with her.

They later go on a cruise together.

During the trip:

Katherine jumps overboard.

She survives and eventually reaches an island.

Derek, believing he has an opportunity, attempts to gain control of Chancellor Industries.

Attorney Mitchell Sherman turns to Victor Newman for help preventing Derek from taking over the company. (Teleserial)

This is important because it integrates Victor into the Chancellor corporate world and strengthens his position on the show.

John Abbott and Jabot arrive

One of Season 8’s most historically important introductions is:

John Abbott

John first appears in 1980.

The role is initially associated briefly with Sean Garrison, before Brett Halsey becomes John through 1981. Cast records document both actors during 1980. (Kiwix)

John is the founder of:

Jabot Cosmetics

He is also father to:

Jack Abbott
Ashley Abbott
Traci Abbott

Soap Opera Digest confirms that John first appeared in 1980 and that Brett Halsey preceded Jerry Douglas in the role. (Soap Opera Digest)

This is the beginning of the family that will ultimately replace the Brooks family as one of Y&R’s central dynasties.

Jack Abbott arrives

Jack Abbott — Terry Lester

First appearance: July 22, 1980 — Episode #1869

Season 8 marks the introduction of one of the most important characters in The Young and the Restless history: Jack Abbott, originally played by Terry Lester.

Jack is introduced as the son of John Abbott and becomes closely associated with the family business, Jabot Cosmetics. From the beginning, he is portrayed as ambitious, charming and a womanizer — characteristics that will define much of his early history on the show.

Jack’s arrival is particularly significant because it establishes the Abbott family as a new major force in Genoa City. The Brooks and Foster families still dominate much of the canvas in 1980, but the introduction of John and Jack begins a gradual transition toward the Abbott family becoming one of Y&R’s central dynasties.

Terry Lester originated the role and would play Jack until 1989. Peter Bergman would take over the role later that year.

Jill begins the transition toward Jabot

Jill’s story also starts moving toward the future of the series.

She becomes involved professionally with Jabot Cosmetics.

This is historically important because Jill’s connection to Jabot will eventually lead directly to:

John Abbott

and later to her marriage into the Abbott family.

The full Jill/John romance belongs later, but Season 8 plants the seeds.

Recasts & SORAS

Jill Foster — major triple transition

This is the season’s biggest recast situation.

Brenda Dickson

Final appearance of original run: January 9, 1980

That actually falls in Season 7.

Jill is then absent briefly.

Bond Gideon

1980 — temporary Jill

↓

Deborah Adair

from 1980

Adair becomes the regular Jill and remains through 1983.

The casting record confirms Dickson’s January 9 departure, Gideon’s brief 1980 tenure and Adair’s subsequent three-year run. (Wikipédia)

So within Season 8:

Bond Gideon → Deborah Adair

is the principal Jill recast.

John Abbott

Sean Garrison → Brett Halsey — 1980

This occurs extremely early in John’s history. (Kiwix)

Patty Williams

Tammy Taylor → Lilibet Stern — 1980

Patty is initially played by Tammy Taylor, then Lilibet Stern becomes the regular Patty. (Kiwix Server)

Brooks Prentiss

Brooks is now played by:

Jamin Hall — 1980–81

The character is beginning to age from infant toward young child, but this is not yet a dramatic teenage/adult SORAS. Cast records later show R.J. Williams and André Gower succeeding Hall in 1981–82. (TVRage)

Major SORAS

No true child-to-adult SORAS during Season 8.

Phillip Chancellor III remains a child.

Brooks remains a young child.

Heather is a baby.

Jennifer Foster is a baby.

Cole Howard is a child.

Births

Heather Stevens

1980

Mother: April Stevens
Father: Paul Williams

Exact broadcast date currently unverified. (Wikipédia)

Jennifer Elizabeth Foster

1980/81

Mother: Chris Brooks Foster
Father: Snapper Foster

Named after her late maternal grandmother Jennifer Brooks. (Teleserial)

Cole Howard

Not born during Season 8.

Cole is already a young child when Eve brings him into Victor’s orbit in 1980. (Wikipédia)

Mary Williams is excluded from the newcomers list because her documented first appearance is March 17, 1980, nine days before our Season 8 starts. (Kiwix Server)

Character departures

Vanessa Prentiss — K.T. Stevens

1980 — character dies.

Her run is documented as ending in 1980. (TVRage)

Lance Prentiss — John McCook

1980

McCook permanently leaves the role during this period. Lance himself will return with another actor. (Soap Hub)

Suzanne Lynch — Ellen Weston

June 5, 1980

Her documented run ends in 1980. (TVRage)

Derek Thurston — Joe LaDue

1980

LaDue’s original Derek run ends during this era; he will eventually return in 1984. (TVRage)

Brenda Dickson as Jill

Her departure occurred January 9, 1980, just before Season 8, so I would not count it as a Season 8 departure. (Wikipédia)

Returning characters

Sally McGuire

Sally McGuire — Lee Crawford

Sally returns because her son Chuckie, fathered by Snapper, becomes seriously ill.

This forces Chris and Snapper to confront their earliest relationship trauma again. (Teleserial)

The surviving cast record places Lee Crawford’s return in 1981–82, so depending on the exact first return episode, this may fall at the very end of Season 8 or immediately into Season 9. I would therefore mark:

Sally McGuire — return: 1981, exact season boundary to verify.

Chuckie Roulland

Returns with Sally as part of the same storyline.

Marriages

Stuart Brooks & Liz Foster

Married: 1980

This is the major marriage of the season.

It formally joins Y&R’s original two families:

Brooks + Foster.

Their marriage lasts until Stuart’s death in 1984. (Kiwix)

Paul Williams & April Stevens

Not yet married during most of Season 8.

Their marriage is recorded as occurring in 1981. (Wikipédia)

Without an exact wedding airdate, I would not yet place it inside Season 8 rather than Season 9. We need the episode date before locking that one down.

Victor & Julia

Already married before arriving in Genoa City.

Their marriage deteriorates throughout the season but does not begin here.

Nikki & Greg

Already married at the beginning of Season 8.

Their relationship deteriorates and heads toward divorce.

Deaths

Vanessa Prentiss

1980

Cause: suicide.

Crucially, Vanessa deliberately arranges circumstances so that Lorie will be suspected of killing her. (Wikipédia)

This is the season’s major regular-character death.

Walter Addison

1980

Dies of a heart attack during his encounter with Nikki.

His death leads to Tony Baker being falsely accused of murder and Greg becoming Tony’s defense attorney.

Major deaths

Vanessa Prentiss — suicide
Walter Addison — heart attack

The most important historical point

Season 8 is arguably the season in which the Y&R we recognize today starts taking shape. The Brooks and Fosters are still prominent, but their dominance is fading. Victor is rapidly moving to the center, the Williams family is being built around Paul, and John & Jack Abbott/Jabot arrive in 1980. (Soap Opera Digest)

One thing I would not yet lock into our master chronology is the exact episode total. We have a solid #1790 start on March 26, 1980, but I want an archival source for the March 25, 1981 episode number before assigning an exact Season 8 total.

Victor Newman, sensing a closeness between Julia and Brock that went beyond friendship, became jealous. Julia agreed to stay with Victor, provided he commit completely to their marriage. But Victor was convinced that Julia and Brock Chancellor were lovers, and Victor turned to Lorie Brooks for attention. Soon after, Victor provided Julia with a gun for protection when a robber attacked her. Meanwhile, Brock caught Victor and Lorie kissing, and resumed his romance with Julia.

Julia told Victor that she wanted to have a baby. But behind Julia’s back, Victor had a vasectomy. Julia also began modeling at Michael Scott’s studio, which was partly owned by Victor. Brock left town because of Julia’s inability to end her marriage to Victor. While Victor was out of town, his former secretary, Eve Howard, suddenly surfaced. Julia had hostile feelings for Eve, who d had a one-night stand with Victor. Feeling vulnerable and confused by Eve’s presence, Julia slept with Michael. Julia was immediately overwhelmed with grief. Her friendship with Brock had remained strictly platonic. But now that she had slept with Michael, Julia had actually cheated on Victor for the first time in their marriage. When Julia accepted a modeling assignment for Jabot, with Michael as the photographer, Victor suspected that they were lovers.

Katherine Chancellor had a change of heart about Derek and made him head of Chancellor Industries. George Packard, a friend of Rex’s, didn’t trust Derek and arranged for Judy Wilson to work as Derek’s secretary. But George’s plan backfired. Judy led Derek to believe that she was actually his ally. Meanwhile, Douglas Austin tried unsuccessfully to pursue a romance with Katherine. With Douglas pining for Katherine, Derek turned his romantic attention to Judy. Fed up with Derek, Katherine decided to dump him. But Derek got Katherine drunk and they made love, which hurt Douglas. While on a cruise with Derek, Katherine realized that he didn’t really love her. She jumped overboard. Katherine survived and ended up on a remote island. But Derek, who believed that she was dead, sought to take control of her assets. Mitchell Sherman, Katherine’s lawyer, persuaded Victor to regain control of Chancellor Industries to protect Sherman s client in her absence.

With trouble brewing in Lance and Lorie’s marriage, Lance began an affair with Monique. Realizing, however, that he wanted his marriage to work, Lance Prentiss sent Monique back to Paris and set his sights on wining back Lorie.

Lucas Prentiss told Lance and Lorie that he had located Leslie at Jona’s. Jona supported Lucas’s efforts to win back Leslie. But Leslie had fallen in love with Jona. Casey ended her association with Lucas after realizing that he was still hung up on his wife, Leslie. Lucas then told Lorie that Leslie had amnesia. Soon after, Lorie visited Leslie. When Leslie didn’t recognize Lorie, she didn’t reveal to Leslie that they were sisters. Eventually, after recalling more fragments of her past, Leslie returned to Genoa City, but the memories confused her. She didn’t understand how Lance could be the father of her son. Lorie worried that Leslie would soon regain her memory and demand custody of Brooks. Meanwhile, Vanessa Prentiss became Leslie’s ally because she knew that losing Brooks would destroy Lorie. But Leslie surprised Lorie when she awarded full custody of Brooks to her and Lance. Leslie explained that she couldn’t be a proper mother to a child she hardly remembered. Soon after, Leslie resumed her piano career and resolved to stay in Genoa City and regain her memory. Jona also stayed behind, and he competed with Lucas for Leslie’s love. Lucas was also jealous of Jona’s growing friendship with Casey. Vanessa met with Jona and encouraged him to take whatever means necessary to win Leslie’s love because she didn’t want to see a reconciliation between Leslie and her son, Lucas. Leslie agreed to take a cruise with Lucas, which bothered Lorie. She fretted that, if Leslie and Lucas resumed their marriage, they might seek custody of Brooks.

Jill Foster accepted a job at Jabot Cosmetics, owned by John Abbott. Jill immediately became interested in reporter Steve Williams, Carl s and Mary’s oldest son, who stopped by Jabot on an assignment. But Peggy Brooks was also attracted to Steve. Soon after, Jill was pursued by John’s playboy son, Jack, who had accepted a job at the company so that he could be close to Jill. Meanwhile, Jill took credit for Jack’s decision to work at Jabot because it made her look good to John, the man whom Jill was ultimately interested in snaring. Impressed by Jill’s ambition and talent, John awarded her with a promotion. He made her the liaison with Michael Scott’s studio and the campaign that Jabot was launching with Julia Newman as the model. Jill also became roommates with Eve Howard.

Chris Brooks befriended April Stevens, who was distraught because of her pregnancy. Soon after, Paul Williams discovered that April was pregnant with his baby, but he refused to take responsibility. Instead, he urged April to put the baby up for adoption. April’s parents tried to pressure her into revealing the identity of her unborn baby’s father, but April remained silent. Part of April’s parents tactics included telling her that she had a twin sister, which they had given up for adoption. Eventually, they discovered that Paul was the baby’s father.

After escaping the prostitution ring, Nikki turned to the New World brotherhood, a cult. Soon after, Paul, who felt guilty about April’s pregnancy, also joined the cult because he thought that it would provide him with serenity. Eventually, Paul realized that the cult was a farce and quit. Greg, meanwhile, decided to let go of Nikki. A hitman arrived in Genoa City with plans to kill Greg. But he accidentally shot Liz, who recovered. When Nikki heard the news, she rushed to the hospital. Peggy Brooks joined forces with Steve Williams to write an expose about the cult and even infiltrated it, which nearly cost Peggy her life

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS SEASON 7

For the early Y&R years, I am continuing with the anniversary-based chronology we established for Seasons 1–6. This time, the surviving episode guide lets us establish the episode range much more precisely.

Season overview

Original U.S. run: March 26, 1979 – March 25, 1980
Episodes: 258
Global episode range: #1532–#1789

The surviving chronological guide places #1532 on March 26, 1979, while #1788 aired March 24, 1980, making #1789 the March 25 episode. This gives us 258 episodes for our Season 7 chronology. (feuxdelamour.com)

There is one major format change during this season:

February 4, 1980 — Y&R expands from 30 minutes to one hour. (Wikipédia)

And, even more historically important, Victor Newman arrives four days later.

A correction from my previous Season 6 sheet: Chris Brooks is Lynn Topping during this period, not Trish Stewart. Topping played Chris from September 15, 1978 to August 20, 1980. (Wikipédia)

1979–80 cast photography

Unlike the well-documented 1977 CBS ensemble portrait, I have not found a surviving CBS catalogue entry that clearly labels one group photograph as the official Season 7 cast photo.

There are period CBS promotional photographs from 1979–80, but I would label them “1979–80 CBS promotional cast photography” rather than falsely identify one as the official Season 7 portrait.

Major plots

Nikki kills her father

This is one of the defining stories of early Nikki Reed.

Nikki and Casey’s father Nick Reed returns to Genoa City. Casey gradually remembers the horrifying truth about her childhood: Nick sexually abused her.

Nick then attempts to sexually assault Nikki.

Nikki fights him off and kills her father in self-defense. Contemporary retrospectives confirm the storyline and that Nikki is subsequently put on trial. (Soap Opera Digest)

Nick Reed — Quinn Redeker

Final appearance: June 4, 1979. (Les jeunes et les indomptés)

This death profoundly affects Nikki’s self-esteem and relationships.

Nikki’s trial

Nikki faces prosecution for killing Nick.

During the trial, the full history of Nick’s abuse of Casey becomes central to explaining Nikki’s actions.

Eventually Nikki is cleared.

Jill later uses a drifter named Joseph Thomas, who strongly resembles Nick, to torment Nikki and Casey psychologically. Quinn Redeker plays both Nick Reed and Joseph Thomas. (Les jeunes et les indomptés)

Nikki and Greg

After her traumatic experience with Nick, Nikki becomes increasingly close to Greg Foster.

Greg represents stability and respectability—almost the opposite of Nikki’s earlier relationship with Paul.

Paul still wants Nikki and tries to stop the relationship.

Nikki nevertheless chooses Greg.

Nikki Reed & Greg Foster

Marriage: 1979

They marry at the Brooks family home. Both Soap Opera Digest and Soap Central confirm the 1979 marriage. (Soap Opera Digest)

This is:

Nikki’s first marriage.

Rose DeVille and the prostitution ring

One of the season’s darkest stories begins with the arrival of:

Rose DeVille — Darlene Conley

First appearance: June 6, 1979

Yes — this is Darlene Conley, eight years before she becomes Sally Spectra on The Bold and the Beautiful.

Rose runs a supposed modeling agency that is actually a front for prostitution. (Arcsnet Wiki)

Nikki, bored with married life, believes she is beginning a modeling career.

Instead, she becomes trapped in Rose’s operation.

Walter Addison dies

Rose sends Nikki to meet a client, Walter Addison.

Nikki refuses to have sex with him.

During the confrontation, Walter suffers a fatal heart attack.

Terrified, Nikki contacts Rose, who helps conceal what happened and dispose of the body.

A street kid, Tony Baker, subsequently finds the body and is accused of murder.

The enormous irony:

Greg becomes Tony’s defense attorney.

Nikki therefore has to conceal from her own husband information that could clear his client. Soap Central’s Greg biography preserves the sequence of events. (Soap Central)

The storyline continues into Season 8.

Leslie’s breakdown and disappearance

Leslie struggles after the birth of Brooks and the collapse of her marriage to Lucas.

She cannot cope with the complicated situation involving:

Leslie / Lucas / Lance / Lorie / Brooks.

Lorie knows that Lance is Brooks’s biological father.

Leslie eventually suffers another severe breakdown, disappears and develops amnesia. (Chped)

She wanders into a bar operated by a man named Jonas, who tries to help her discover who she is.

For a time Leslie essentially becomes a woman without an identity.

Lorie becomes Brooks’s mother figure

With Leslie unable to care for Brooks, Lorie becomes increasingly attached to her sister’s child.

This creates an extraordinary situation:

Lorie is raising her husband’s biological child with her own sister.

Leslie’s eventual reappearance threatens Lorie’s bond with Brooks.

The custody/emotional conflict continues into the following season.

Vanessa destroys Lance and Lorie’s marriage

Vanessa remains determined to control her sons.

She removes Lance from power at Prentiss Industries and installs Lucas.

Lance becomes depressed and starts gambling.

Lorie desperately tries to restore his confidence.

Vanessa offers Lorie a deal:

she will restore Lance’s position if Lorie divorces him.

Lorie accepts.

She travels to Haiti for a quick divorce, believing she is sacrificing her marriage to save Lance. (Wikipédia)

Lance & Lorie

Divorce: 1980

Lance is devastated when he discovers what Lorie has done.

This becomes one of the central Prentiss-family stories as Season 7 ends.

Katherine returns from the dead

At the beginning of this period, Katherine is believed dead after the sanitarium fire.

In reality, Katherine escaped and allowed everyone to believe that her roommate’s burned body was hers.

Derek therefore inherits control of the Chancellor fortune and prepares to marry Jill.

Then, at the critical moment:

Katherine appears alive.

She interrupts Jill and Derek’s plans and reclaims both her fortune and her place in Derek’s life. (Wikipédia)

It is one of the earliest major “back from the dead” plots in Y&R history.

Katherine, Derek and Suzanne

Suzanne’s scheme is exposed.

Katherine had discovered that Suzanne was responsible for the drugged candy that made everyone believe Katherine was mentally ill.

Katherine ultimately gets revenge.

Derek remains tied to Katherine, and she eventually puts him in charge of Chancellor Industries. (Teleserial)

Suzanne remains into 1980—her documented final appearance is June 5, 1980, which means her actual departure belongs to Season 8, not Season 7. (Les jeunes et les indomptés)

Chris, Snapper and Casey

Chris has returned to Genoa City.

Snapper is caught emotionally between:

Chris, his wife,

and

Casey Reed, his colleague and romantic interest.

Casey eventually recognizes that Snapper needs to resolve his marriage and backs away.

Chris and Snapper begin repairing their relationship. (Teleserial)

Paul and April

Paul moves on from Nikki and becomes involved with a new neighbor:

April Stevens

April first appears:

December 4, 1979. (Wikipédia)

Paul and April begin a relationship.

April becomes pregnant by Paul.

Paul wants her to terminate the pregnancy; April refuses.

The pregnancy therefore begins in Season 7, but:

Heather Stevens is NOT born during Season 7.

Her birth belongs to the subsequent chronology. (WikiZero)

Victor Newman arrives

And now the historic moment.

Victor Newman — Eric Braeden

First appearance: February 8, 1980

Victor arrives in Genoa City with his wife:

Julia Newman — Meg Bennett

First appearance: February 8, 1980

The date is firmly documented for both characters. (Wikipédia)

Victor is initially conceived as a short-term character, rather than the future patriarch of the show.

He and Julia move to Genoa City when Victor becomes involved with Chancellor Industries.

The Newman family therefore officially begins:

February 8, 1980

A historical source on the Newman family likewise dates the family’s first Y&R appearance to that day. (Bitter House)

This makes Season 7 one of the most consequential seasons in the entire history of Y&R.

Victor and Julia

Victor is already controlling and possessive toward Julia.

He keeps her socially isolated while focusing heavily on business.

Julia begins developing a friendship with Brock Reynolds, setting up Victor’s jealousy and the first major Newman marital conflict.

These stories expand considerably in Season 8. (Wikipédia)

Y&R becomes an hour-long soap

Another major historical milestone occurs on:

February 4, 1980

The Young and the Restless expands from:

30 minutes → 60 minutes

The show had aired as a half-hour drama since its premiere on March 26, 1973. (Wikipédia)

Remarkably, Victor and Julia arrive only four days after the format expansion.

So February 1980 represents a genuine transformation of Y&R:

one-hour format + arrival of Victor Newman.

Recasts & SORAS

April Stevens

April undergoes several very rapid recasts:

Patricia Albrecht — December 4–24, 1979

↓

Janet Wood — January 21–February 7, 1980

↓

Cindy Eilbacher — from February 21, 1980

These dates are unusually well documented. (Wikipédia)

Lance Prentiss

John McCook leaves temporarily:

Final appearance of this run: February 20, 1980.

He will return briefly May 1–19, 1980, which falls in Season 8. Dennis Cole eventually takes over in 1981. (Wiki des Séries Télévisées)

Therefore this is not yet a Season 7 recast—it is an actor departure.

Nikki Reed

No recast this season: Melody Thomas Scott has been Nikki since February 20, 1979 and remains in the role. (Wikipédia)

Major SORAS

None.

Phillip Chancellor III remains a child and Brooks Prentiss remains an infant.

Births

Major live births: None during Season 7

Two important pregnancies need to be distinguished from births:

April Stevens becomes pregnant with Paul’s child, Heather Stevens, but Heather is born later.

Chris Brooks Foster and Snapper move toward starting their family, but Jennifer Foster is not born during this season.

Brooks Prentiss was born in January 1979, before the March 26 Season 7 boundary.

New characters

CharacterActorFirst appearance

April StevensPatricia AlbrechtDecember 4, 1979
Victor NewmanEric BraedenFebruary 8, 1980

Rose’s exact debut is documented as June 6, 1979. (Arcsnet Wiki) April’s is December 4. (Wikipédia) Victor and Julia both debut February 8, 1980. (Wikipédia)

There are also short-term/supporting characters connected to Rose’s criminal storyline, including Walter Addison and Tony Baker, although their principal material extends into the next season.

Character departures

Nick Reed — Quinn Redeker

June 4, 1979 — death. (Les jeunes et les indomptés)

Scott Adams — Jack Stauffer

1979.

Scott’s relationship with Nikki ends and the character disappears from the canvas; his documented run ends in 1979. (TVRage)

John McCook as Lance Prentiss

February 20, 1980

This is an actor/temporary character departure, not Lance’s permanent exit. McCook returns briefly in May 1980. (Wiki des Séries Télévisées)

Returning characters

Chris Brooks Foster

Chris is already back by the beginning of this season, now played by Lynn Topping, so I would not classify her as a Season 7 return.

Katherine Chancellor

Katherine’s case is unusual.

She never actually left the series, but in story terms she “returns from the dead” after being presumed killed in the sanitarium fire.

Therefore:

Major storyline return: Katherine Chancellor — revealed alive.

It should be recorded as a presumed-death return, not a conventional cast return.

Marriages

Nikki Reed & Greg Foster

1979

Nikki’s first marriage.

They marry at the Brooks family home after Greg helps Nikki through the aftermath of her father’s death and trial. The marriage is consistently documented as lasting 1979–1981. (Soap Opera Digest)

Jill & Derek

They do not successfully marry during Season 7.

Jill attempts to reunite with Derek while Katherine is presumed dead, but Katherine appears alive before the marriage can be completed. (Les Feux de l’Amour)

Stuart & Liz

They do not belong in the Season 7 marriage list. Their marriage is placed in 1980, but after the portion of 1980 covered by this season; it belongs in our subsequent chronology. (WikiZero)

Deaths

Nick Reed

June 4, 1979

Killed by Nikki in self-defense during his attempted sexual assault. (Les jeunes et les indomptés)

Katherine Chancellor

Not dead.

She was only presumed to have died in the sanitarium fire.

Therefore the season has:

Major regular/supporting character deaths: 1 — Nick Reed.

Season’s historical turning pointThe arrival of Victor Newman

The two dates I would especially lock into our master chronology are February 4, 1980, when Y&R becomes an hour-long program, and February 8, 1980, when Victor and Julia Newman debut. Victor’s arrival therefore belongs unequivocally to our Season 7, not Season 8. (Wikipédia)

Although Katherine was once again living as Derek’s wife, she worried that he would eventually leave her. To keep Derek tied to her, Katherine appointed him head of Chancellor Industries.

Leslie gave birth to a healthy baby boy, which she named Brooks. Leslie’s family, meanwhile, was baffled by her strange response to being a mother. Leslie eventually realized that she was suffering from exhaustion. This was brought on by her efforts to keep the truth from Lance about their child, and her strained marriage to Lucas, which she considered a charade. Although Leslie appreciated the support that Lucas gave her, she realized she didn’t really love him. Leslie made arrangements to leave town. She left Brooks in Lance and Lorie’s care. Shortly before Leslie’s departure she had an unsettling confrontation with Lorie, who correctly surmised that Lance was really Brooks’ father. Leslie was so traumatized by the confrontation that she suffered another nervous breakdown, which resulted in complete amnesia. Wandering aimlessly through Genoa City, Leslie found herself at Jona’s Bar. Jona, the owner, was immediately drawn to Leslie, who identified herself as Priscilla. As Leslie became more comfortable in her new surroundings, details of her former life slowly began to return. Jona promised to help Leslie reclaim her former identity, even if it potentially meant losing her. Meanwhile, Lance and Lorie quickly adapted to their parental role and soon considered Brooks their son.

After losing Leslie, Lucas turned his sights on Casey, who was making great strides in recovering from her troubled childhood. Casey was also trying to emotionally detach herself from Snapper, whose wife, Chris, had returned to Genoa City. Chris was interested in resuming a relationship with Snapper, but she had allowed too much time to pass without any contact between them. When Chris realized that Snapper was involved with Casey, she introduced herself to the new woman in her husband’s life. Since Snapper couldn’t decide which woman he wanted to see exclusively, Chris and Casey jointly decided to cut off contact with him until he was able to make a decision.

Casey’s sister, Nikki, who was not charged with killing her rapist dad, and Nikki became involved with Dr. Scott Adams. Casey was thrilled that her sister was dating a doctor because she hoped it would bring stability to Nikki’s life. At first, Scott did have a positive impact on Nikki’s life. She enrolled in college and she no longer had a desire to be promiscuous. As time went on, however, Nikki had difficulty committing to a healthier lifestyle and reverted to her former self-destructive behavior. It pained Scott to see Nikki behave that way and he broke off their relationship.

Police officer Carl Williams and his wife, Mary, found themselves trouble by their adolescent son Paul’s rebellious attitude. Like Nikki, Paul was also promiscuous. The two quickly engaged in a steamy affair. But with Paul, Nikki got more than she bargained for. He gave her gonorrhea. Soon after, Paul set his sights on April Stevens. That affair left April pregnant.

Katherine Chancellor eventually replaced Derek Thurston as head of Chancellor Industries with Victor Newman. Katherine immediately saw her profits skyrocket. Victor was a ruthless and cunning businessman with a strong competitive streak. But Victor’s wife, Julia, viewed him as cold and distant. He stayed late at the office, rarely phoning to say when he’d be home. On the few evenings that he did arrive home at a reasonable hour, Victor barely uttered a word to Julia. Even though she’d been Victor’s wife for several years, Julia felt as if she was married to a stranger. Feeling isolated and lonely, Julia turned to Katherine’s son Brock for friendship. Julia found Brock’s warm nature, which was in stark contrast to Victor’s coldness, appealing and it wasn’t long before she was interested in more than just a friendship with him.

Casey continued to work with Snapper at the clinic, where Greg was also contributing his legal services. One day when Nikki stopped by the clinic to see Casey, Nikki met Greg. She was instantly attracted to him. They began dating. Eventually, their involvement developed into serious love and they made plans to marry. But Nikki was still deal with the emotional aftermath caused by killing her father, which led her to question her self worth. When Paul learned of Nikki’s plans to wed Greg, he tried to stop her. But Nikki insisted that she loved Greg and Paul settled for being good friends with his former lover.

Meanwhile, married life proved too dull for Nikki, who decided to pursue a modeling career as a way of bringing excitement into her life. She soon signed with “La Plus Belle Rose,” a modeling agency run by Rose DeVille. It wasn’t long before Nikki discovered that Rose’s models didn’t specialize in walking down runways or posing for fashion shoots. Their main source of income was prostitution. By the time Nikki figured things out, however, she was in too deep to simply walk away. Rose arranged for Nikki to meet with a client in his hotel room. But when the man tried to pressure Nikki into having sex, she ultimately resisted. The man chased Nikki around the hotel room and suddenly collapsed from a heart attack. In a panic, Nikki called Rose, who arranged for two thugs to carry the client’s body to a nearby alley and ditch it. A street kid named Tony stumbled upon the body and went through the corpse’s pockets in search of a wallet. The police spotted Tony and booked him for murder. Ironically, Greg was appointed Tony’s public defender
