The Young and the Restless — Season 44 (2016–2017)

All dates below refer to original U.S. broadcasts on CBS, unless otherwise stated. Canadian broadcasts sometimes aired an episode earlier, which explains some one-day discrepancies in contemporary recaps.

1. Season dates

BoundaryDateOverall episode
First episode under the September-to-September classificationSeptember 1, 2016#11,000
Last episode under that classificationAugust 31, 2017#11,253
Beginning of the following seasonSeptember 1, 2017#11,254

This classification gives 254 original episodes. Some databases display 255 because their listings contain inconsistent or duplicated entries. TheTVDB.com

Official-source limitation: CBS confirms that episode #11,000 aired on September 1, 2016. However, I could not establish both season boundaries from an accessible CBS or official YouTube archive. CBS’s press-photo archive also contains conflicting season labels and dates. Consequently, the boundaries above should be described as the September-to-September episode-guide classification, rather than fully verified official CBS premiere and finale dates. Photos

2. Characters and actors

The roster below includes the principal cast, recurring characters, children and identifiable storyline guests. I cannot certify it as an exhaustive list of every credited day player across all 254 episodes. Characters are alphabetized by surname; characters without an established surname appear separately.

For married characters, I use a familiar, consistent surname: Jill under Abbott, Lauren under Fenmore, Chelsea under Newman and Lily under Winters.

3. Main storylines

Adam’s apparent death and Chloe’s secret

The season opens with the culmination of Adam’s escape storyline. Chloe incapacitates him before the cabin explosion, leaving Chelsea to believe that her husband has died. Chloe then remains close to Chelsea while concealing her responsibility.

Nick becomes suspicious and investigates. Chelsea initially defends her friend, but discovers Adam’s wedding ring among Chloe’s belongings immediately before Chloe’s wedding to Kevin. The confrontation destroys the ceremony and sends Chloe on the run. Victor’s involvement in Chloe’s release and his subsequent efforts to conceal her whereabouts deepen the Newman family’s divisions. kiwix.thunderforge.net

Christian’s identity is exposed

Patty reveals that the child Sharon and Dylan have been raising as “Sully” is Christian, the son Nick believes he lost with Sage. On November 1, 2016, Sharon admits the truth to Nick and then Dylan.

Nick takes Christian back, devastating Dylan. A further secret remains concealed: Adam is Christian’s biological father, something Victor and Chelsea know but choose not to tell Nick. Michael Fairman TV

Dylan’s undercover assignment and departure

Already grieving the loss of the child he believed was his son, Dylan undertakes a dangerous undercover operation involving Luther Fisk. His work places him in such danger that he must enter witness protection.

He leaves Genoa City and Sharon in January 2017. Sharon subsequently takes control of Crimson Lights and begins rebuilding her life, eventually becoming romantically involved with Scott Grainger. Fandom

The consequences of Billy and Phyllis’s affair

Jack learns that Phyllis has betrayed him with Billy. The revelation fractures both his marriage and his relationship with his brother.

Phyllis and Billy’s attachment continues to affect their lives into 2017, while Billy’s work with Victoria at Brash & Sassy keeps his former marriage emotionally relevant. Jack’s resentment also feeds the business rivalry surrounding Jabot and Brash & Sassy. episodate.com

Fenmore’s financial crisis and Gloria’s return

Lauren struggles to save Fenmore’s. Gloria returns, discovers an opportunity and secretly helps Jack strengthen his negotiating position by undermining alternative investment possibilities.

Jack acquires a substantial stake in Fenmore’s. Gloria’s dealings with him lead to a sexual relationship and a job as his executive assistant. Meanwhile, Lauren faces a personal crisis when Scott is held hostage overseas; his eventual return introduces Daniel Hall’s version of the character. wiki.autismit.com

Jill’s heart attack and Colin’s financial betrayal

Jill discovers that Colin has depleted her personal funds. During the resulting crisis, she suffers a heart attack and must confront the consequences of neglecting her health.

The storyline also revisits Jill’s complicated connection to Katherine Chancellor and tests her marriage to Colin. CBS developed the heart-health story with the American Heart Association. globaltv

Cane, Juliet and the collapse of the Ashby marriage

During a business trip to Tokyo, Cane becomes intoxicated and has a sexual encounter with Juliet. He initially conceals what happened.

After losing her position at Brash & Sassy, Juliet brings a sexual-harassment claim. Her pregnancy and the confirmation that Cane is the father devastate Lily and place the family under increasing strain. The newly teenage Charlie and Mattie become active participants in the fallout. en.wikipedia.org

Dina’s return and Graham’s influence

Dina re-enters her children’s lives, accompanied by Graham Bloodworth. Jack and Ashley struggle with their feelings about their mother’s abandonment and question Graham’s influence over her.

Her business dealings bring her into Neil and Devon’s orbit, while her return gradually restores the Abbott family’s history to the centre of the show. The full consequences of Graham’s agenda unfold beyond this season’s cutoff. newikis.com

Tessa, Mariah and the trafficking investigation

Tessa arrives as an aspiring musician, becomes involved with Noah and develops a close bond with Mariah, who is dating Devon. Mariah and Tessa share their first kiss on August 3, 2017.

Meanwhile, Sharon’s crisis-line work brings her into contact with Crystal, later revealed to be Tessa’s sister. Crystal is trapped in a sex-trafficking operation. Abby’s relationship and business venture with Zack develop alongside this story, and Alice Johnson reappears near the end of August. The trafficking storyline’s resolution belongs to the following season. Michael Fairman TV

4. Births

No major continuing character is born during the September 1, 2016–August 31, 2017 period.

The distinction matters particularly for these children:

ChildClarification
Christian NewmanBorn October 7, 2015. The 2016 storyline reveals his identity; it is not a new birth.
Bella FisherAlready born before her onscreen introduction in 2016. Her paternity becomes important during this season.
Sam AshbyJuliet’s pregnancy begins during this season, but Sam’s birth occurs in November 2017, after the cutoff.

Christian’s birth date and Juliet’s later childbirth storyline are documented separately from the events of this season. en.wikipedia.org

9. Weddings

CoupleDateOutcome
Kevin Fisher and Chloe MitchellApril 6, 2017Wedding interrupted; no marriage completed. Chelsea confronts Chloe with Adam’s wedding ring, and Chloe flees.

This is the season’s central wedding event. It should not be listed as a successful remarriage. Although some fan biographies describe Kevin and Chloe as married again in 2017, Soap Opera Digest explicitly states that the ceremony was abandoned and that they did not subsequently exchange vows. IBTimes

Victoria and Travis’s engagement also ends without a wedding.

11. Y&R / B&B Crossovers

DirectionCharacter and actorU.S. broadcast dateStory
B&B → Y&REric Forrester portrayed by John McCookJanuary 27, 2017Eric reconnects with Lauren while she considers Jack’s investment in Fenmore’s.
Y&R → B&BNo confirmed character crossover located within September 1, 2016–August 31, 2017.—No corresponding Genoa City character visit was established for this period.

Eric’s January 27 visit is confirmed by contemporary crossover coverage and the episode synopsis. A CBS press-photo entry carries a conflicting January 12 date; the broadcast reporting supports January 27, 2017. Michael Fairman TV

Sheila Carter’s return to B&B in June 2017 concerns a character shared by both soaps, but it is not a contemporaneous transfer from an active Y&R storyline. Likewise, John McCook’s earlier role as Lance Prentiss on Y&R is separate from his crossover appearance as Eric.
