Period covered: September 29, 2021–September 29, 2022. All dates below refer to U.S. broadcasts, rather than Canadian advance broadcasts or filming dates.

Characters are alphabetized by surname, using their familiar names during this period. Married names and alternative names are noted where useful.
The roster includes principal characters, recurring characters, children and identified named guests. Its remaining limitation is the absence of a complete examination of all 255 episodes’ closing credits: uncredited extras and a few small speaking roles cannot be guaranteed exhaustive coverage.

Children whose on-screen participation remains unverified
Continuing cast lists associated the following children with these performers, but I could not securely establish newly filmed appearances within Season 49:
- Katie Abbott/Newman portrayed by Sienna Mercuri.
- Christian Newman portrayed by Alex Wilson.
- Bella Fisher portrayed by Martie Blair.
Miles Fisher remains part of the family’s story, but no credited child performer was established. Similarly, Holden and Ryan Hare are Johnny’s preceding performers; their replacement is documented below, rather than treating an ongoing cast-list entry as proof of a Season 49 appearance. 3. Principal plots
Victoria and Ashland: the marriage, the fraud and his death
Victoria marries Ashland in Tuscany despite revelations about his identity and the origins of his fortune. Jesse Gaines threatens to expose him, while Victor and Adam maneuver to protect Victoria and their business interests.
The greater deception emerges in 2022: Ashland has fabricated his terminal cancer diagnosis as part of his strategy to merge his company with Newman. Victoria eventually turns against him and helps recover control of the business.
Ashland becomes increasingly threatening. During a confrontation at Victoria’s home, Nick intervenes and punches him; Ashland falls against the fireplace and dies. Victor arranges a cover-up intended to make the death appear connected to a car crash. Chance investigates and ultimately declines to pursue the case further. TVMEG.COM
Chance returns, and Dominic becomes the center of a custody dispute
After reports suggest that Chance died during his undercover assignment, Abby refuses to accept his death. She locates him in Spain and persuades him to return home.
Chance struggles with post-traumatic stress and survivor’s guilt, affecting his marriage, work and confidence as a father.
Devon’s attachment to Dominic leads him to seek legally recognized parental involvement. Abby and Chance eventually agree to shared custody. When Dominic becomes seriously ill, Devon proves to be a compatible bone-marrow donor and helps save his son’s life. soapoperanetwork.com
Jack discovers Allie—and Diane is alive
Anonymous messages draw Jack and Phyllis into an investigation of his estranged son Keemo’s life. Jack learns that Keemo has died and discovers Allie, the granddaughter he never knew existed.
The woman helping orchestrate the connection calls herself Taylor Jensen. She is revealed to be Diane Jenkins, presumed dead since 2011.
Diane returns to Genoa City seeking forgiveness and a relationship with Kyle. Her arrival provokes fierce opposition from Phyllis, Nikki and Ashley. Kyle gradually allows her into his life, while Jack remains cautious. TVMEG.COM
Phyllis and Jack’s reunion unravels
Jack and Phyllis briefly resume their romantic relationship. However, Phyllis’s determination to defeat Diane—and her use of the relationship in that rivalry—destroys Jack’s trust.
Phyllis joins Nikki and Ashley’s campaign against Diane, sells the Grand Phoenix and takes a position at Marchetti, where Diane also works.
Kyle and Summer return and take charge at Marchetti
Kyle, Summer and Harrison return from Milan. Jabot acquires Marchetti, allowing the fashion business to relocate to Genoa City.
Kyle becomes Marchetti’s CEO and works alongside Summer. Their professional plans become entangled with the conflict between their mothers. By the finale, they are preparing a vow-renewal celebration. Soap Opera Digest
Mariah and Tessa marry and pursue parenthood
Mariah continues recovering from her kidnapping and separation from Dominic. She and Tessa discuss having a family, become engaged and eventually marry.
Crystal returns for the ceremony after the legal obstacles surrounding her earlier disappearance are resolved. Following the wedding, Mariah and Tessa pursue adoption. Tessa also faces a medical problem affecting her singing voice.
Their daughter’s arrival belongs to a later season; no child is born to them during Season 49. Soap Opera Digest
Rey’s death and Sharon’s grief
Rey develops a friendship with Chelsea and Connor while remaining married to Sharon. Before a planned trip to a hockey game, he dies in the incident involving Victoria and Ashland’s cars.
Sharon faces another major bereavement. Nick and her children support her, and the family later celebrates Mariah’s wedding in the shadow of that loss. Daytime Confidential
Sally, Adam and Nick
Sally’s fashion career brings her closer to Adam. Her successful intervention in Victoria’s wedding dress helps establish her professionally, and she and Adam become romantically involved.
Corporate upheaval at Newman Media and Adam’s conflict with Victor damage their relationship. After their breakup, Sally and Nick become intimate, creating a new triangle that is firmly underway by the finale. SoapsSpoilers.com
Chancellor-Winters and Nate’s growing resentment
Lily and Devon merge their companies into Chancellor-Winters, with Billy, Nate, Amanda and Imani involved in the expanded business.
Nate struggles with Devon’s management and feels that his ideas are being dismissed. His resentment escalates into plans to assist Victoria in acquiring control of the company when it goes public. Elena objects to his conduct, placing their relationship under strain.
Audra arrives to assist with the proposed public offering near the season’s end. Soap Opera Digest
Chelsea wants Johnny to know the truth
Chelsea becomes increasingly invested in establishing a relationship with Johnny. Billy and Victoria finally tell him that Chelsea is his biological mother.
Johnny reacts with anger and distress. The revelation intensifies Chelsea’s emotional difficulties, but her subsequent suicide attempt occurs after this season. soaphub.com
4. Births
No new birth involving an established on-screen family was identified during Season 49.
Important distinctions:
- Dominic was born on August 27, 2021, in Season 48.
- Miles Fisher was born in October 2020.
- Mariah and Tessa’s parenthood storyline remains at the adoption-planning stage during Season 49.
Dominic’s major story here concerns custody and his medical crisis, rather than his birth. Soap Opera Digest
5. Recasts and SORAS

|---|---|---|---|
| Noah Newman | Robert Adamson → Rory Gibson | October 12, 2021 | Adult-to-adult recast accompanying a return. |
| Chance Chancellor | Donny Boaz’s former role → Conner Floyd | November 29, 2021 | Adult-to-adult recast accompanying a return. |
| Ashland Locke | Richard Burgi → Robert Newman | February 9, 2022 | Permanent adult recast. |
| Summer Newman | Hunter King → Allison Lanier | May 17, 2022 | Permanent adult recast. |
| Imani Benedict | Leigh-Ann Rose → Denise Boutte | September 6, 2022 | Temporary replacement because of a scheduling conflict. |
| Johnny Abbott | Holden and Ryan Hare → Paxton Mishkind | September 8, 2022 | Older-child/young-teen recast and age-up. |
| Tucker McCall | Stephen Nichols’s former role → Trevor St. John | September 28, 2022 | Adult-to-adult recast accompanying a return. |
These dates are supported by contemporary casting coverage, actor interviews and subsequent role histories. soapoperanetwork.com
SORAS distinction: Johnny’s replacement brings an older portrayal, but no child-to-adult transformation of the kind specified in your request occurs during this season. Moses’s teenage SORAS happened in Season 48.
Diane’s casting requires a separate distinction: Susan Walters returns to a role she previously played. The most recent preceding Diane was Maura West, whose run ended in 2011. This is therefore a returning former performer succeeding an intervening recast. tvinsider.com
Hunter King’s final new appearance as Summer was February 21, 2022, following additional guest appearances after her 2021 departure from the regular cast. cheatsheet.com

Actor changes are not character departures: Ashland remains on the canvas when Richard Burgi leaves, and Summer continues under Allison Lanier. Likewise, Mishael Morgan’s move to recurring status does not by itself constitute Amanda’s permanent exit.

Chelsea also resumes a more substantial on-screen presence after Melissa Claire Egan’s maternity leave. That is a return from an acting absence within an ongoing storyline.

| Mariah Copeland and Tessa Porter | May 17, 2022 | Kyle officiates at Top of the Tower. The celebration spans several episodes. |
Kyle and Summer’s wedding is referenced as already completed in early-October dialogue. Victoria and Ashland’s vows are documented in the October 15 recap. TVMEG.COM
Mariah and Tessa’s date needs particular care: May 13 was the planned story date and is repeated on some reference pages, but the U.S. episode in which they exchange vows and are pronounced married aired May 17. Their wedding is Y&R’s first same-sex marriage ceremony. Daytime Confidential
Kyle and Summer’s 2022 vow renewal is still being prepared at the Season 49 finale; the ceremony belongs to Season 50. soaphub.com

Keemo’s death is established through an obituary and memorial photograph, rather than a new performance by Philip Moon. TVMEG.COM
Rey’s death is disclosed in the April 20 episode. Ashland’s fatal confrontation is shown on July 25, followed by the disappearance of his body and Victor’s cover-up. Daytime Confidential
Diane’s return reverses her previously accepted death; it is not a new death during this season.
11. Y&R / B&B Crossovers

No other newly broadcast character crossover between the two soaps was verified within these Season 49 boundaries. Sally remains a regular Y&R character throughout; her transfer from B&B occurred during Season 48.
