Major plots
Ridge, Caroline and the wedding that never happens. The series opens with Ridge Forrester and Caroline Spencer in love, despite Bill Spencer’s fierce opposition. Ridge proposes in Episode #1. Bill hires private investigator Conway Weston to find evidence of Ridge’s womanizing. Conway photographs Ridge sleeping with former girlfriend Alex Simpson. Bill reveals the betrayal to Caroline just before her wedding; devastated, Caroline nevertheless walks toward the altar but collapses before marrying Ridge. (The Bold and the Beautiful)
Brooke Logan enters the Forrester world. Brooke begins the series far removed from the wealth of the Forresters. In the premiere, she is attacked while returning home, and police officer Dave Reed investigates. Brooke gradually becomes fascinated by the Forresters and especially Ridge. Her friendship with Caroline brings her directly into their orbit, laying the foundations for the Brooke/Ridge/Caroline triangle that will dominate the show’s early years. (Google Play)
Caroline’s rape and Thorne’s devotion. After breaking with Ridge, Caroline tries to rebuild her life. She is raped by Ron Deacon, a man who initially presents himself as friendly and harmless. The storyline follows Caroline’s trauma, the investigation and Ron’s prosecution. Thorne becomes one of Caroline’s strongest sources of support, and their relationship develops from friendship into love. (Wikipédia)
Thorne and Caroline marry. Thorne proposes after Ron’s trial. Caroline remains emotionally connected to Ridge, but ultimately chooses Thorne. Ridge writes Caroline a declaration of love before the wedding, creating one final crisis. Caroline nevertheless goes through with the ceremony and Thorne and Caroline become husband and wife. (The Bold and the Beautiful)
Eric, Stephanie and Beth — the original generation’s triangle. Eric and Stephanie’s marriage is already troubled when the series begins. The arrival of the Logan family revives Eric’s history with Beth Henderson Logan, his college sweetheart. Beth never completely stopped loving Eric, while Stephanie gradually realizes that the Logans represent a threat to her marriage and family. This becomes one of Season 1’s major long-term stories. (Wikipédia)
Stephanie and Kristen. Stephanie has a difficult relationship with her daughter Kristen and is unusually possessive of Eric’s affection toward her. Kristen eventually becomes involved with ambitious designer Clarke Garrison, who first appears on September 30, 1987. His motives are initially questionable, but the relationship becomes increasingly serious. Their marriage, however, belongs to the following season. (Wikipédia)
Donna, Katie and Rocco. Donna encourages Rocco to date her insecure younger sister Katie, who is self-conscious about her acne. Rocco is actually attracted to Donna, creating an early Logan-family triangle. Katie eventually realizes that Rocco’s feelings are directed toward her sister. (Digital Spy)
Margo’s complicated love life. Margo Lynley works closely with Eric at Forrester Creations and has feelings for him, while her previous affair with Ridge is part of Bill’s campaign against Ridge. As the season develops, Margo also becomes increasingly important to Bill Spencer and later Clarke Garrison, setting up major stories for Season 2. (TheTVDB)
Births
None.
There are no major on-screen character births during Season 1. Several existing parent/child relationships and past pregnancies are important to the mythology, but no new core child is born between March 23, 1987 and March 18, 1988.
Marriages
Thorne Forrester & Caroline Spencer — 1987.
This is the only completed major wedding of Season 1. Ridge and Caroline’s earlier wedding in April 1987 is aborted after Caroline learns about Ridge and Alex and collapses before the ceremony can be completed. (The Bold and the Beautiful)
There is an important archival discrepancy over the precise broadcast date of the Thorne/Caroline ceremony: the current official B&B “Most Iconic Weddings” archive labels Episode #0171 as originally aired November 16, 1987, whereas some third-party episode databases assign later December dates to #170–172. Because the official B&B archive explicitly identifies #0171 and November 16, I would use November 16, 1987 for a season reference file. (The Bold and the Beautiful)
Ridge Forrester & Caroline Spencer — attempted wedding, April 1987 — NOT married. Caroline collapses at the altar after Bill reveals Ridge’s infidelity. (The Bold and the Beautiful)
Deaths
None.
There are no major character deaths occurring during Season 1. Caroline survives both her assault and its aftermath; Ron Deacon is prosecuted rather than killed. The later Angela Forrester story concerns a daughter whom Stephanie believes to have died years earlier, so it should not be counted as a Season 1 death. (Wikipédia)
Season 1 at a glance
241 episodes | 1 completed major marriage | 0 births | 0 major deaths
Season 1 essentially establishes the show’s original DNA: the Forresters vs. the Logans, Ridge–Caroline–Brooke, Thorne’s love for Caroline, Eric–Stephanie–Beth, and the collision of fashion, family loyalty, sex, class and ambition. The official B&B description itself frames the season around Ridge and Caroline, Bill’s opposition, and the arrival of two Logan sisters into the Forresters’ world. (The Bold and the Beautiful)
