1978-1979 : Off The Wall era

All the studio recordings (songs, demos and alternate versions) recorded by MJ during the Off The Wall era (1978-1979). Songs and poems written but never recorded, live performances, covers and remixes by other artists are not included.

A Baby Smiles aka Baby Smiles : Lyrics to the song were featured as a poem titled “When A Baby Smiles” in the 1992 book Dancing the Dream. Written and recorded in 1979 for the Off the Wall album. Reworked in 1990. Failed to make the Dangerous album. Cited by MJ in his 1993 deposition. Remains unreleased.

Burn This Disco Out : Recorded from December 1978 to June 1979. Released on August 10, 1979 (Off The Wall).

Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough (demo) : Recorded in Fall 1978 at the Hayvenhurst home studio with Randy & Janet. Released on October 16, 2001 (Off The Wall Special Edition).

Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough : Recorded from December 1978 to June 1979. Released on August 10, 1979 (Off The Wall).

Get On The Floor (demo) : Recorded in 1978 and contains unreleased deleted verse from the album version. Full demo leaked in 2014 but remains unreleased.

Get On the Floor : Recorded from December 1978 to June 1979. Released on August 10, 1979 (Off The Wall). Re-arranged by MJ in early 1980, this newer version with a more prominent guitar sound, was included on new pressings of the album.

Girlfriend (demo) : Recorded on 1978. Full demo leaked in 2017 but remains unreleased.

Girlfriend : Recorded from December 1978 to June 1979. Released on August 10, 1979 (Off The Wall).

Good Night : Written by Rod Tempperton and recorded in 1979. Failed to make the Off The Wall album. Considered for Thriller album. Has a poem spoken by Michael at the end. Remains unreleased.

Goodness Knows : Written by James Whitney. Recorded between 1976 and 1979. Remains unreleased.

Got to Find a Way Somehow : Written by Michael Jackson in 1979 and registered with the United States Copyright Office in November 1984. Remains unreleased.

I Can’t Help It (demo) : Recorded in 1978 & played in 2013/2014 during fan conventions “In Studio With Michael”. Full demo leaked online in 2015. Remains unreleased.

Susie : Written and recorded by Michael Jackson circa 1978. The song was re recorded in 1994-1995 as Little Susie during the “History” sessions. 1978 demo remains unreleased.

Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ (demo) : demo recorded at Michael’s Hayvenhurst home recording studio in 1978. Leaked online & released posthumously on October 26, 2009 (This Is It).

We Are the Ones : Written by Michael Jackson in 1978. Song registered with the United States Copyright Office in November 1984. Remains unreleased.

What a Lovely Way to Go aka What A Lonely Way To Go : Demo recorded “before Off The Wall” according do Michael’s sworn deposition in 1993. Released posthumously on November 18, 2022 (Thriller).

Who’s Right, Who’s Wrong : Song recorded with Kenny Loggins in 1979. Released on September 28, 1979 (Keep The Fire).

Working Day & Night (demo) : Recorded in 1978 at the Hayvenhurst home studio with Randy & Janet & released on October 16, 2001 (Off The Wall Special Edition).

Working Day & Night (Uncut Session) : With unreleased ad-libs. Leaked in 2018 but remains unreleased.

Working Day and Night : Recorded from December 1978 to June 1979. Released on August 10, 1979 (Off The Wall).

You Told Me Your Lovin : Written by Michael Jackson in 1979. A second unreleased version exists, with words and music by Jackson’s brother Randy Song registered with the United States Copyright Office. Remains unreleased.
