This Is It rehearsals in 2009

March 28 : Michael goes to CenterStaging, a studio in Burbank, California with Kenny Ortega and Travis Payne to start rehearsals for This Is It.

April 22/23 : Michael rehearses songs at CenterStaging.

June 4 : Michael attends rehearsals at the Forum for the first time. Michael visits Culver Studios on the set of The Drill/TDCAU and Thriller which would be shown on the backdrop screens of the show. Michael coaches the dancers before and during the filming, he also checks the visuals for Earth Song. Songs rehearsed : The Drill/TDCAU, Jam, Smooth Criminal, The Way You Make Me Feel, Stranger In Moscow.

June 5 : Rehearsals at The Forum. Michael arrives and hugs his dancers while the band is playing This Place Hotel. Vocal coach Dorian Holley warms up with Michael. Michael rehearses Human Nature, I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, Thriller, Beat It and a bit of Don’t Stop Til you Get Enough.

June 6 : Michael and his team checks special effects & stage production for the show. When Michael takes off the Balmain jacket, he is ready to perform on stage. A few songs from the second half of the setlist were rehearsed including You Are Not Alone, Billie Jean and Man In The Mirror. At the end of the evening, the complete staff gets on a round and Michael says some inspiring words for what they expect to live in the coming months.

June 17 : John Branca meets with Michael and Frank Dileo during rehearsals at The Forum and they talk about working together again. Stage rehearsals running through the first half of the set (Wanna Be, Speechless, Jam, The Drill, Human Nature, Smooth, The Way You Make Me Feel). MJ coaches the dancers on Dangerous, gets off-stage and sees them rehearsing the dance routine.

June 18 : Michael does not show up at rehearsals. Randy Phillips goes to Michael’s house at 100 Carolwood Way. In the presence of Dr Murray he demands Michael to stop seeing Dr Klein and stop takings the drugs Dr Klein give him.

Michael finally goes to the rehearsal at the Forum at 9:30 pm visibly shaken. He hugs his dancers and crew, he’s wearing a Michael Bush jacket that was supposed to wear during I Just Can’t Stop Loving You in the concerts. He rehearses I’ll Be There, The Jacksons medley and Black Or White.

June 19 : During the last day of rehearsal at the Forum, Michael seems upset, not coherent, drugged and disoriented so following Kenny Ortega’s suggestion he decides to go back home in order to rest.

June 23 : Michael and the “This Is It” team start rehearsing at the Staples Center in L.A. Michael rehearses several songs in full including Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin, Jam and They Don’t Care About us. Talitha reaches Michael’s hand after reherrsals and says later to her friends “Michael’s hand was trembling”.

June 24 : Last day of rehearsals for “This Is It” at the Staples Center. “Earth Song”, “Thriller”” & “Dangerous” are the last songs that Michael rehearse. Before going back home, Michael is given fan letters by his beloved Talitha. He dies from cardiac arrest a few hours later…

LIVE ALBUMS/TV BROADCASTS/COMMERCIAL RELEASE

Michael Jackson’s This Is It is a 2009 American documentary film about Michael Jackson’s rehearsals and preparation for the concert residency of the same name scheduled to start on July 13, 2009, at the O2 Arena, but cancelled due to his death eighteen days prior on June 25. The film includes additional behind the scenes footage, including dancer auditions and costume design. The film’s director, Kenny Ortega, confirmed that none of the footage was originally intended for release, but after Jackson’s death, it was agreed that the film would be made. The footage was filmed in California at the Staples Center and The Forum.

The film was given a worldwide release and a limited two-week theatrical run from October 28 to November 12, 2009, but the theatrical release was later extended for an additional three weeks in domestic theaters and one to three weeks in overseas markets. Tickets went on sale a month early on September 27 to satisfy a high anticipated demand; the film broke numerous pre-sale and box office records.
