ERA

1978-1980 : Off The Wall era

RECORDING DATE

Demo recorded in 1980 with Paul Anka.

The track was originally written by Michael and Paul Anka in 1980, under the title of “It Don’t Matter to Me”. Not much is known about their demo, however it is most likely Jackson singing over piano, similarly to other collaborations between the two.

In 2018, the song was picked up by Drake. A whole new production was crafted with help from 40 and Nineteen85. Parts of Michael’s original demo were featured, mainly the chorus. His vocals are also noticably autotuned.

While casual listeners mostly enjoyed “Don’t Matter to Me”, it was met with mixed reactions from Michael’s fans around the world, main reason being the autotune on his vocals. Even some of the Jackson family members had something to say.

❝I just feel like if he didn’t finish it, you shouldn’t use it.❞
— Austin Brown (son of Rebbie Jackson)

On August 5, 2025, an HQ snippet of Anka’s reworked version leaked, intended for his 2013 album, Duets, featuring vocals from both him and Jackson. A snippet from March 16 was later rediscovered, featuring Anka singing backing vocals over Jackson’s chorus. This snippet was originally thought to be fake until the other snippet leaked with the same instrumental. The full demo remains unreleased.

ERA

RECORDING DATE

Although it is not known when exactly it was recorded, the registration on U.S. Copyright Office credits Neff-U as the producer, which means the song must have been recorded sometime between 2008 or 2009.

Damien Shields : “I’ve heard a legit MJ song called “Don’t Make Me Stay”. I have no idea what era it’s from. But yeah that one is titled and labelled as “Don’t Make Me Stay” and Michael sings those exact words in the chorus. Parts of the chorus remind me of “Runaway” by Janet. Super rough demo”. Don’t Make Me Stay had a scratch vocal […] The only coherent lyrics I could make out were the words “don’t make me stay” […] The music is done but it seems like MJ is just feeling out the vocal melody. Throwing out random words and ad libs. Nothing coherent. And it’s recorded with a room mic, so the vocal is distant. VERY loose track. […]”
