February 08 : Thriller 25, the 25th-anniversary edition reissue of Thriller (1982) is released by Sony BMG’s reissue division, Legacy Recordings. Along with the original material, the reissue contains remixes, new material, a DVD (for some versions) and collaborations with contemporary artists. Thriller 25 debuts at number one on the Billboard Top Pop Catalog Albums and in nine other countries. Two singles, “The Girl Is Mine 2008” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ 2008”, are released from the album to moderate success, and a number of the other remixes charted despite no physical release.

August 22 : Sony Music releases “King of Pop” , a compilation album of songs by Michael Jackson, in commemoration of his 50th birthday in 2008. The track listing of the album differs significantly across countries because fans in each country where Sony BMG operated national offices were allowed to vote on which songs would appear on that country’s edition of the album. The initial pool of songs, which also differed across countries, was selected from Jackson’s back catalogue and also included a new “megamix” of five songs from the Thriller album that was created by Jason Nevins. “Billie Jean” is the only song to appear on all versions of the album.

September 09 : The Motown Years (also known as The Motown Years 50), a 3-disc compilation box set by American singer Michael Jackson and the group The Jackson 5, is released by Motown Records and Universal Music Group to celebrate Jackson’s 50th birthday. Rod Temperton has a meeting with MJ at his hotel suite during which MJ plays Rod several songs. Some of the songs already had lyrics, which MJ wanted to improve. Others were instrumentals without any lyrics at all. The songs MJ plays for Rod are Best of Joy, Hollywood Tonight, The Loser, The Way Your Love Me, Beautiful Girl, Dark Lady, DIE, and Can’t Stop Loving You.

The golden gates of Neverland are removed and put into storage in an nondescript warehouse on the outskirts of Los Angeles as part of a public auction next April 2009. More than 2,000 items, ranging from personal effects and costumes to pieces from Michael’s private art collection as well as fittings and furnishings from his Neverland ranch, will be up for sale at a four-day public auction at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.
