CHRISTMAS STAR

Sources : My personal research, Wikipedia, Michael Jackson: For The Record by Chris Cadman & Craig Halstead, Twitter account of Damien Shields and the amazing archives of the MJCast.

RECORDING DATE

The song is a cover, originally by John Williams who scored the track for Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, from 1992. Michael wanted to record it during the summer of 1994, and had the entire studio transformed into a winter wonderland; fake snow, twinkling lights, a Christmas tree, Michael even bought presents for everyone. The song was also to feature a children’s choir, which a video of the choir, as well as the instrumental, leaked online in 2023 when Brad Sunberg’s laptop was stolen from one of his seminars. Apparently the track was never finished because Michael, after getting presents, turning the studio into Santa’s grotto, and recording a children’s choir for the track, simply lost interest in it, and moved on.

Can’t Come Back

Sources : My personal research, Wikipedia, Michael Jackson: For The Record by Chris Cadman & Craig Halstead, Twitter account of Damien Shields and the amazing archives of the MJCast.

RECORDING DATE

Recorded in 1989-1991 with Bryan Loren. In 2024, a trove of unreleased Michael Jackson tapes were found in a storage unit deep in the San Fernando Valley. Musgrove’s journey to the tapes began when an associate contacted Greg Musgrove about a storage unit he’d recently bought in Van Nuys. The unit once belonged to Bryan Loren, a music producer and singer. On the tapes are 12 unreleased tracks, music Jackson worked on prior to the Dangerous album, around 1989 to 1991 including the song  “Can’t Come Back” completed (date October 4, 1989/4 versions). He and the attorney he brought on approached the Jackson Estate with their findings earlier this year. The estate, who Musgrove says did their own research into the tapes, declined to purchase the tapes for an unknown reason, but did provide him with an official letter stating that the estate does not claim ownership. They make it clear in the letter, however, that he and anyone else who might purchase these tapes down the line do not own the copyright on the recordings or the compositions, the estate does. Essentially, these tapes can never be released publicly. Remains unreleased.

RECORDING DATE

Song written by Bryan Loren for Michael Jackson and intended for the Dangerous album. The track was recorded during sessions for the Dangerous album between 1989-1990. The title was included on the insert of a DAT featuring an early configuration of the album (dated April 19, 1990), which was found during the Brad Sundberg laptop theft. However, no information was given on the track.

On the tapes are 12 unreleased tracks, music Jackson worked on prior to the Dangerous album, around 1989 to 1991 including the song  “Bubbles” (dated October 4, 1989). He and the attorney he brought on approached the Jackson Estate with their findings earlier this year. RECORDING DATE

Not its official name, but is said to just be an instrumental. Other songs like this, like Broken Chair from 2009, or the similarly titled Ask Rene from the Dangerous sessions, and other instrumentals get working titles just for something to refer to them as. A cassette featuring “Ask DD”, as well as cassettes of other songs like “Family Thing”, were put up for auction in 2016. SONG NEVER CONFIRMED.

Apocalypse Now

Sources : My personal research, Wikipedia, Michael Jackson: For The Record by Chris Cadman & Craig Halstead, Twitter account of Damien Shields and the amazing archives of the MJCast.

RECORDING DATE

The track was written, produced and recorded by Jackson between 1986 and 1987 for Bad, although didn’t make the cut. John Robinson, the drummer discussed the track during an interview with the Rhythm magazine in 2010 : “There was another track I did that never made it called “Apocalypse Now” that I wrote six and a half minutes of military drum cadences for. I brought in Don Williams, John Williams’ brother, Dan Greco and Bob Zimmitti and we recorded with four field snares, four piccolo snares, two sets of piatti and one gran casa. It was a very hip tune but it never made the record. I was kind of upset about that.” @falke_pil on X (December 9, 2024) :

“16.09.1986, 6:24 in length. Instrumental, no vocals. Sounds interesting.”
