August 28, 2008 : Good Morning America

Aug. 28, 2008 — — He first became a star as a young boy, then endured superstardom, scandals and a legal prosecution, but as he turns 50, Michael Jackson told “Good Morning America” in an exclusive interview that he’s “having a wonderful time, just relaxing.”

Speaking by phone from his home in California, at times so softly he was barely audible, Jackson said he was listening to James Brown and preparing for his 50th birthday Friday, when he will “just have a little cake with my children and we’ll probably watch some cartoons” — before he gets right back to work.

Does turning 50 mean he now has an AARP card?

“Not that I know of!” Jackson said, laughing.

He said he still can do all his famous dance moves and “more.”

“I feel very wise and sage, but at the same time very young,” he said.

Reflecting back, Jackson said the happiest time in his life was probably when he was recording his hit solo albums “Thriller,” released in 1982, and “Off the Wall,” released in 1979. Those albums — which were accompanied by a string of hit singles and videos and corresponded with the 1983 debut of his signature dance, the “moonwalk” — propelled him to the height of his stardom.

“That meant very much to me and seemed to be received so beautifully by the public and the world,” he said. “I enjoyed it very much.”

Asked to pick a single song as his greatest achievement, Jackson went back to the same period.

“Oh boy, that’s a hard one,” he said, before singling out “We Are the World,” “Billie Jean” and “Thriller.”

But Jackson was not content to rest on his laurels, saying, “I am still looking forward to doing a lot of great things.”

He hopes to release new music and tour, though he doesn’t have dates set.

“I am writing all the time,” he said. “I love composing and the whole thing. But I am also raising my children and enjoying it and teaching them to ride bicycles and how to read. I love it.”

I Have This Dream (1st demo/1999) : Written by Michael Jackson, David Foster and Carol Bayer Sager and recorded in April 1999 during the Invincible sessions. In November 1999, to celebrate Thriller as the best video ever, Michael graces the cover of TV Guide (issue dated December 4, 1999) with an exclusive photoshoot + an interview given recently in a New York hotel. In the interview Michael talks about his new album : “I have a couple of things planned. I think it’s going to be totally different from what I did before. There’s a song on the new album called “I Have This Dream.” It’s a millennium song about the world and the environment that I cowrote with Carole Bayer Sager and David Foster.” Remains unreleased.

I Have This Dream (2nd demo/2002) : The song was repurposed in 2002 into the topic of a contest held by AOL Instant Messenger. The contest members would write lyrics for the song, and the King of Pop would later record whichever would win. On August 29, 2002, a writer named Ric Kipp eventually won the whole contest. The 1999 instrumental provided for a 2002 contest held by AOL Instant Messenger and Tonos Entertainment leaked online on April 16, 2010. Remains unreleased.

I Have This Dream (3rd demo/2004-2006) : MJ worked on the song with John Barnes at Neverland in 2004. and the song became a charity single after Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and was co-written with Abdullah bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the second son of Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the king of Bahrain. Singers James Ingram, Ciara, Snoop Dogg, the O’Jays, R Kelly and Shirley Caesar recorded vocals in Los Angeles. In October 2005, Michael recorded parts with a orchestra in Metropolis Studios in Chiswick, London, but never completed his vocals and did not attend further sessions. John Barnes came to Bahrain in 2005/2006 to work on the song. Abdulla said he had spent $2.2m on “I Have This Dream” and cited it, among other songs, in his lawsuit against Jackson in 2008. The parties settled out of court. Played during a court hearing in London in 2008. 2 Seas Records initially announced the track as “From the Bottom of My Heart”. This title was later reused for a completely different track Jackson worked on a couple years later. Remains unreleased.

What More Can I Give aka Todo Para Ti/Heal L.A

Sources : My personal research, Wikipedia, Michael Jackson: For The Record by Chris Cadman & Craig Halstead, Twitter account of Damien Shields and the amazing archives of the MJCast.

RECORDING DATE

The track was first written and recorded in 1992 with Brad Buxer, under the title “Heal L.A.” He worked on the track during the HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I sessions.

During a meeting with Nelson Mandela, words “what more can i give?” came to Michael’s mind, and he began rewriting the song.

On December 31, 1997, Michael wrote a letter to Kim Dae-jung to congratulate him on his election. In the letter he writes : “”For my part, I plan to include a Korean singer in my new “What More Can I Give” recording which will be the theme song of my Benefit Concertto help the children of North Korea. I think such a participation of a Korean singer will help restore the pride of the people of Korea”.

MJ recorded a demo in 1998.

April 12, 1999 : In the office of Harrods in London, Michael gives an interview to Piers Morgan for UK tabloid Daily Mirror. The interview is published front page on April 13 + April 14. During the interview, MJ reveals that he is working on a new charity song to help the the crisis in Kosovo : “I wrote a song What More Can I Give that I want to put all the stars together and if I could do it here in Britain it would be great. Maybe I should do it in Britain. I wrote it and I want to give the proceeds to the families of Yugoslavia. Maybe I should do it here instead of America and get all your celebrities in England and if the Americans want to fly down too. One of the things I didn’t like about “We are the World” song that I wrote was I didn’t like the idea “USA for Africa” it was like it was discriminating the rest of the world. I asked for the Bee Gees and I asked for other groups and they said “they weren’t born here” I said “I don’t care! I just want the world to show that they care”. I mean I am not into politics and I don’t talk about religion and politics but I think it’s totally ignorant and it’s wrong to hurt people, to hurt innocent children over some political issue? I think its genocide; I think it’s wrong. Ethnic cleansing? It’s ignorant, it’s stupid.”

Michael’s plan was to premiere the during the MJ & Friends concerts in June 1999, however, for unknown reasons the song was not performed at the concerts.

Following the September 11 attacks in 2001, he rewrote the track again, however this time he brought multiple artists from around the world, similarly to a project from 2 decades earlier, “We Are the World”. The recording took place and finished in October 2001. In addition, a Spanish version called “Todo Para Ti” was recorded and featured both English and Latin artists.

December 14, 2001 : Michael gives an interview to USA Today. Asked about “What More Can I Give”, MJ answers : “It’s not finished. We’re adding artists, and I’m getting myself satisfied with the instrumentation.”
