When the family finds out that Grace made the call she is fired. TMZ reports that the investigators believe that Dr. Murray may have tried to cover up the fatal dose of propofol. They state that the amount that Dr. Murray told the cops that he gave to Michael Jackson versus the amount of propofol in Michael’s system does not match up. They also report that there was an empty bottle of propofol with a tear in the stopper in a hidden compartment in a closet.

October 9, 2010 : Oprah Winfrey’s production team move into Hayvenhurst to tape an interview with Katherine & Joe. While at Hayvenhurst Oprah gets to interview Prince, Paris & Blanket.

November 30, 2010 : We’ve learned Katherine Jackson and company are in the process of packing boxes and will leave the family home in early December for several months during the remodel.

But there’s a bigger story here. As TMZ first reported, after the infamous “stun gun” incident at the home — in March, when Jaafar allegedly threatened to shock Blanket — Katherine asked Jaafar‘s mother, Alejandra, to take her 5 kids and move.

As we told you, Katherine and the Michael Jackson Estate generously offered Alejandra and her brood a condo MJ owned in the San Fernando Valley, but Alejandra wanted a lot more — thus the stand off.

Now we’re told Katherine is not letting Alejandra back in the house after the remodel. The condo offer still stands, but if she doesn’t accept she’ll have to find somewhere else to live with Jaafar, Jermajesty, Dante and Randy, Jr.

But one of Alejandra’s kids is getting a reprieve from Katherine. We’re told 20-year-old Genevieve will be staying with Katherine and Michael’s kids in a temporary home during the remodel, and she will be the lone child of Alejandra who will be welcomed back to Hayvenhurst.

April 8, 2011 : « Alejandra — who has 5 kids via two of Michael Jackson’s brothers, Randy and Jermaine — has been a squatter in the Encino compound for months — and was probably going to be evicted next week after a court hearing, but she has informed the Michael Jackson Estate she will be moving out by April 14.

The Estate had offered Alejandra a condo, provided she sign a confidentiality agreement, but she refused. Sources tell us the Estate is not paying Alejandra a penny or offering her any housing — this was Alejandra’s decision — and we’re told it’s a clear sign a book deal has been closed.

June 16, 2013 : The whole Jackson family attends Taj’s wedding at Hayvenhurst (except Janet, Marlon, Randy & Paris). Jermaine Jr. Aja, Siggy, Jared, Omer, Genevieve, Stevanna, Randy Jr., Rebbie, TJ, Blanket, La Toya, Royal, Joseph, London Blue, Dee Dee, Katherine, Bryce, Taj, Thayana, Paloma, Tito, Breana, Adren, Taryll, Thaisa, Jansen, Thaina, Frances, Jo Jo, Donte, Stacy.

May 6, 2016  : « The estate of Michael Jackson could not be clearer — the deed that was recorded giving Katherine Jackson ownership of the family’s Encino estate is bogus to the core.

Attorney Howard Weitzman is scoffing at the deed TMZ first told you about … filed by Katherine which gives her 25% ownership in the home, and each of MJ’s 3 kids 25% as well.

Weitzman says it’s laughable that the person on the deed changing the title is Michael Jackson … who is utterly incapable of giving anything to anyone anymore. Weitzman says, “Michael’s estate owns the property for the benefit of his children and Mrs. Jackson has no ownership interest.”

As we reported, although Katherine signed a document attached to the deed, she may not be the mastermind, but Weitzman vows to hunt down the culprit.

September 08, 2016 : According to TMZ : Paris Jackson‘s alone and in charge … living in the back guesthouse at Michael‘s old Encino mansion.

Sources close to the family tell TMZ … Paris had been itching to cut the cord from living with her grandmother in Calabasas … where Blanket and several of her cousins also live. We’re told the family had security concerns about her living just anywhere, so it was suggested she use MJ’s old compound.

Michael’s estate controls all of his properties, meaning … technically, Paris needed permission to live there. We’re told she went to them, and pointed out she basically owns the crib as part of her trust — and the estate didn’t fight her.

As for why she’s in the guesthouse — the main house is being remodeled.

We’re also told Paris is living there completely on her own. She and bf Michael Snoddy recently posted pics from the backyard — he comes and goes, but does NOT live there.

October 29, 2016 : Katherine, LaToya, Prince, Paris, Bigi, 3T, Austin, Alejandra & her kids attend the second annual Jackson Halloween Party at Hayvenhurst.

November 03, 2016 : The Los Angeles Times publishes an exclusive interview + photoshoot of Prince Jackson at Hayvenhurst. “Prince Michael Jackson can’t sing or dance. How he’s still following in his father’s footsteps. Providing a rare tour of his father’s Encino compound Hayvenhurst, he is, at 19, a young man prepared to set his own course, one that honors his father but does not imitate him. “Everyone thinks I’m going to do music and dance,” he says, laughing wryly because, as he is the first to admit, he cannot do either. Jackson is interested in producing entertainment but from behind the scenes. Earlier this year he produced his first music video, for Omer “O-Bee” Bhatti’s “Automatic,” and used it to launch King’s Son Productions, the name a wink toward his father’s 1980s coronation as the King of Pop. Another video, for the Sco Triplets, soon followed. He’s standing inside the Encino compound that’s been in the family for nearly a quarter century. The two-acre estate named for the street it’s on has served as inspiration for Jackson. Though the main house is under renovation, his younger sister Paris, now 18, lives in the guesthouse and Jackson visits often. Hayvenhurst is a “sacred place” for Jackson, he says, and not just for the rich family history. This is where he and his siblings came to live to be raised by their grandmother after their father’s death. “It was beneficial. There was 16 people here,” Jackson said, rapidly listing cousins and relatives who occupied the estate after Michael’s death. “It took you away from the grief. We’d wake up in the middle of the night, make quesadillas and talk.”

January 24, 2017 : Paris graces the cover of the February issue of Rolling Stone Magazine. “Paris Jackson: Life After Neverland. In her first-ever in-depth interview, Michael Jackson’s daughter discusses her father’s pain and finding peace after addiction and heartache” : Now sober and happier than ever, with menthol cigarettes as her only remaining vice, Paris left her grandmother Katherine’s home shortly after her 18th birthday and moved into the former Jackson family estate. She spends nearly every moment with her boyfriend, Michael Snoddy, a 26-year-old drummer from the band Street Drum Corps. Originally from Virginia, his dyed mohawk, tattoos, and sagging pants don’t diminish his boy-band charm or his kindness (…).

Currently, Paris lives in the private studio where her father recorded the demo for Beat It. The main Tudor-style house on the Jackson family estate remains empty. Located in Encino, Los Angeles, it was purchased by Joe Jackson in 1971 with the Jackson 5’s first royalties from Motown. Rebuilt by Michael in the 1980s, it is currently undergoing renovation. However, the studio, constructed by Michael in a brick building in the courtyard, is roughly the size of a decent Manhattan apartment, complete with its own kitchen and bathroom. Paris has turned it into a cozy, inviting space. Traces of her father are everywhere, most notably in commissioned artworks. Outside the studio, there is an image in a Disney-style frame of a cartoon castle on a hill, with a caricature of Michael in the foreground and a small blond boy hugging him. It is titled Of Children, Castles & Kings. Inside the studio, a mural covers an entire wall, featuring sketches of Michael in the corner, holding a green book titled The Secret of Life and gazing out of a window at blooming flowers—each flower’s center is adorned with the face of a rosy-cheeked little girl. Paris’s personal decor is quite different. There’s a photo of Kurt Cobain in the bathroom, a Smashing Pumpkins poster on the wall, a laptop adorned with stickers of Against Me! and Never Ending Story, psychedelic wall decals, numerous fake candles, and vinyl records (Alice Cooper, The Rolling Stones) used as wall art. In the kitchen, sitting on a counter, is a framed platinum record signed by Quincy Jones for Michael Jackson (“I found it in the attic,” Paris says with a shrug).

Above an adjacent garage is a mini-museum Michael created as a surprise gift for his family, with walls and even ceilings covered in photos of their history. Michael used to rehearse his dance moves in this room. Now, Paris’s boyfriend has set up his drum kit there.”

Mandatory evacuation orders were issued Friday evening for a portion of the affluent Brentwood area of Los Angeles as the Palisades Fire rapidly spread. The wildfire, the largest in the Los Angeles region, posed a threat to landmarks such as the Getty Center and extended into parts of the Brentwood and Encino neighborhoods. Authorities ordered evacuations in Encino, leading to the closure of Hayvenhurst Avenue on Friday night. Notably, Hayvenhurst Avenue is home to the iconic Jackson family estate, purchased in 1971 for $250,000 and affectionately named “Hayvenhurst.” The Jackson family resided there for decades, with the remaining members moving out around 2010-2011 to the Calabasas area. Michael’s Legacy : 2025

January 03 : Colman Domingo says he ‘completely’ transforms into Joe Jackson for Michael biopic: ‘I don’t look like myself at all’

Frank Cascio’s lawyer, Howard King, notifies Signature Resolution that Frank and other Respondents intended to assert counterclaims against MJC, Branca and other individuals and entities related to Michael Jackson, including presumably for defamation. Thus, the Respondents have clearly acknowledged through their then-attorney that any affirmative claims they may have against MJC and the released parties under the Agreement must be resolved pursuant to arbitration.

Today marks 5 years clean & sober from all drugs and alcohol. to say that i’m thankful would be a poor euphemism. gratitude hardly scratches the surface. it’s because i’m sober that i get to smile today. i get to make music. i get to experience the joy of loving my dogs and cat. i get to feel heartbreak in all it’s glory. i get to grieve. i get to laugh. i get to dance. i get to trust. i feel the sun on my skin and it’s warm. i’ve found that life keeps happening regardless of whether i’m sober or not, but today i get to show up for it. Here’s a little snapshot of what has been possible because of my sobriety, and my god i can’t believe i almost missed it all.”

January 10 : TJ Jackson : Praying for everyone affected by these historic fires. Be safe everyone.

January 11 : The Jackson Family home Hayvenhurst in the path of the LA Fire

Since then, the estate has been used for charity events hosted by Prince Jackson.

Paris Jackson on Instagram : “Do you know someone who lost everything in the fires and is staying in Santa Barbara this weekend? Tell them to come to All Saints this Sunday 2-4 pm to pick up clothing, toiletries, toys, etc. from our donation drive 84 Eucalyptus Lane Please share”.

January 12 : MJ Estate : He thrilled audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with his performances as the lead in @mjthemusical. He originated the lead role in MJ the Musical on Broadway and became the youngest to win a Tony Award as lead actor in a musical. And he reprised that role on the West End since it’s opening at the Prince Edward Theater last year. Last night’s magical performance was his last in the role as he spreads his wings and flies to his next adventure.

January 14 : ‘Rock With You’ music video upgraded : The Estate of Michael Jackson recently made a surprising move by giving one of his classic music videos, “Rock With You,” a visual upgrade. The video is now available on YouTube with a higher resolution option, labeled as “4K.” While this unexpected update caught fans off guard, it raises an interesting question: could this be a sign of more updates to come? Perhaps the Estate is planning to remaster all of Michael Jackson’s iconic short films in preparation for the upcoming biopic.

Efforts to further contain the fire continue as crews monitor weather conditions and remaining hotspots.”

February : After their former attorney, Howard King, notified Signature Resolution of Frank’s and the Does’ intention to pursue counterclaims against MJC, one of its Officers and other thirdparty beneficiaries of the Agreement in the Arbitration, Respondents replaced King with their current attorney, Mark Geragos.Since taking over the representation of Respondents in this dispute, Attorney Geragos has menacingly warned that his clients are poised to file a public lawsuit in court against one of the Officers of MJC and Co-Executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson and the attorneys involved in the Agreement, who are third party beneficiaries of the Agreement for declaratory relief (a claim
unquestionably subject to arbitration), defamation (based on alleged statements by in the capacity as Co-Executor of the Estate), and a claim for a so-called “cover-up” against the Officer and Co- Executor of the Estate of Michael Jackson and the attorneys involved in the Agreement, the firm of
Kinsella Holley and Branca’s firm, Ziffren Brittenham. Since there is no such cause of action, attorney Geragos stated that the “cover-up” claim would be in the form of causes of action for negligent and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Geragos reduced Respondents’ previous outlandish demand for $213 Million to $44 Million, which Geragos demanded on behalf of Respondents be paid in order to avoid a public lawsuit including Respondents’ scurrilous and
fabricated claims.

Michael Jackson Fans Fear Biopic Movie Delay After CinemaCon Silence

Speculation is mounting that the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, “Michael,” may face a significant delay. Despite its scheduled release date of October 3, 2025, recent developments at CinemaCon have raised concerns about the film’s timeline. Lionsgate, which is handling domestic distribution (US) for “Michael,” held its CinemaCon panel on April 1, 2025. The studio made major announcements about franchises like “John Wick” and “The Hunger Games,” but surprisingly, “Michael” was barely mentioned. This absence has led to widespread speculation, with many questioning why the film was not promoted at such a high-profile industry event. According to reports, Lionsgate’s Adam Fogelson only briefly acknowledged the film, stating that there would be “more coming soon.” However, no footage, images, or significant updates were provided. This omission has sparked industry chatter, with insiders now suggesting that the film’s release could be pushed to 2026.

April 02 : Michael Jackson Biopic ‘Michael’ Could Be Split Into Two Parts; Release Date In Flux – The Dish

EXCLUSIVE: Sources are telling us that Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael, from Lionsgate, with a near four-hour cut, could be split into two movies. That’s an option on the table but not a definite at this time. Will the Graham King production make its October 3 release date? Most likely not. But realize there’s a lot of sign-offs here with Universal handling overseas and Japan sold separately. A key factor also for a concert-like movie of this stature is access to Imax screens. King’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which was about another controversial pop star in Queen’s Freddie Mercury, overcame all obstacles and opened to $51 million stateside and crooned to north of $216M U.S./Canada and $910.8M worldwide with four Oscar wins. Will the movie definitely go to 2026 like InSneider said this AM? Maybe, but nothing is definite or gospel yet. There’s a slight chance Michael could still boogie down the road toward the end of this year for awards season; that isn’t out of the question.

Michael Jackson Movie Will Come in Two Parts a la “Wicked” But Not Until 2026 (Exclusive)

Now I can confirm exclusively that “Michael” will be split into 2 two hour films, and they will be released in 2026. There will not be a release in 2025. My sources in the Michael Jackson world are very excited about these developments because the King of Pop, they say, deserves more attention than any other music star.

Michael Jackson Biopic in Flux as Filmmakers Mull Splitting Movie in Two

Now, King and his fellow filmmakers are mulling a new reality for the project, where the superstar’s onscreen story can be further expanded across two features. But it’s a plan that is in very early stages, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. King is said to be championing this option. Still, moving from one film to two would require the sign-off from multiple partners, including the Jackson estate, along with Lionsgate, which is releasing the film domestically, and Universal, which is releasing the film internationally. While the plan is still in nascent stages, the film’s Oct. 3 release date would likely be pushed to allow reworking for the new format.

At this year’s CinemaCon presentation on Tuesday afternoon, Lionsgate did not show footage from the movie, and a release date was not mentioned when motion picture group head Adam Fogelson talked about the project : “Ever since we debuted some early Michael footage at CinemaCon last year, it’s been crystal clear how much global interest and enthusiasm there is,” Fogelson said from the Las Vegas stage. “Much has happened since, and while we aren’t quite ready to share more, we’re going to have some very big and exciting things to say in the coming weeks. So be patient, and stay tuned.”

Lionsgate Studios is moving the release of anticipated biopic Michael from this fall into its fiscal 2027 but didn’t give a new release date. That means it’s at a year or more away. The company’s fiscal year 2026 just started in April.“In regard to our Michael Jackson biopic, we’re excited about the 3½ hours of amazing footage from producer Graham King and director Antoine Fuqua, and we will be announcing a definitive release strategy and timing in the next few weeks. I would note that it is likely we will move Michael out of the fiscal year which will impact fiscal ’26 financial results but will bolster an already strong fiscal 27 slate,” said CEO Jon Felthimer on a conference call with financial analysts after quarterly earnings.

Lionsgate film chief Adam Fogelson confirmed the company is exploring splitting its Michael Jackson biopic into two films.

“At the end, when you look at the music library, when you look at what Michael Jackson was able to deliver in terms of music and contributions to art, whether or not that can be fit into one movie comfortably or not is a question that we are absolutely asking,” he said on a call after quarterly earnings. “We’ll be ready to answer more specifically in the coming weeks.” He was responding to a question on why the film has been delayed by an analyst, who also noted the three and half hour cut referenced by CEO Jon Feltheimer in opening remarks. “Any number of the biggest motion pictures over the last ten or 20 years have had first cuts of movies that were well in excess three and a half hours,” Fogelson said. “And when Jon mentioned the footage, it wasn’t a cut, it was an accumulation of scenes that we’ve seen.”

Michael Jackson Biopic Moonwalking to 22 Days of Additional Photography in June (Exclusive)

Michael, the in-flux Michael Jackson biopic, is prepping for a bulky 22-day set of additional photography to be held in June, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The not-insignificant shoot comes as King, the Jackson Estate and studio partners Lionsgate and Universal are still mulling how to move forward in light of a legal issue, with the movie most likely being split into two parts. The new shoot seems to indicate that headway is being made. Sources tell THR that while a script for a potential second film still needs to be finalized, the planned June shoot would be for the first film. While the term “reshoots” has been bandied about, in this case it’s less about reshooting what has already been shot but rather expand what was half a film into feature length. Sources say the new film will now end with Jackson leaving the Jackson 5 after the release of his first solo album, Off the Wall. (Yes, Bubbles the chimpanzee will be in the first film.)

July 07 : The boy from OZ who leapt to the top in Hollywood : Beebe’s big upcoming film is Michael, the story of mega music star Michael Jackson, directed by Antoine Fuqua. The UK-US production has some Screen Australia funding.

“Michael has been a fascinating journey,” he says. “We’ve been shooting already (at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles and various California locations) and we’re about to restart shooting. The story has expanded and grown. Graham King, who’s producing, has wanted to address that.

“When we shot the first time we found that Michael’s catalogue is so huge, there are so many incredible songs, and we did a lot of performance. I think we were at an hour-and-a-half of just performance, without anyone saying a word of dialogue. So that’s what has led to us to try to expand the narrative.

“I will say that Jaafar Jackson, Jermaine’s son, has been an absolute revelation,” Beebe says. “It’s like the 28-year-old was born to play his uncle. He has Michael’s physicality and looks like Michael at a certain stage of Michael’s life. He can dance like Michael, which I never thought I’d ever say anyone could do, but this kid can. Truly, the closest you’ll ever get to seeing Michael perform again is watching Jaafar.”

July 08 : In a dramatic petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on July 8th, the Estate of Michael Jackson accuses Frank Cascio of masterminding a jaw-dropping extortion plot demanding up to $213 million, threatening to flip decades of fierce public support into salacious allegations about Michael. CASE UPDATE: Extended Timeline : Both sides and the referee agreed that the discovery deadlines should be extended 6 months (February 10, 2027) due to various delays. A status conference is still scheduled for July 11. If judge agrees, this could delay any trial ’til spring 2027.

Taj Jackson : “My brothers and I tried to warn you guys over a decade ago about this family. They lost all respect from me when they chose to purposely scam the public with fake Michael Jackson songs, sung by a sound a like. Then even went on Oprah to help sell this lucrative lie to the world. Money and greed can do horrible things to weak people. I’m so disgusted but not surprised unfortunately. They sold their soul and integrity awhile ago. I’m just pissed that my uncle wasted so much time, energy and money with these vultures.”

TJ Jackson : “It disgusts me how deceitful vultures can be. They act like they are true and real but they aren’t. They only care about themselves and the money they can make off of their connection to achievers. I’ve seen this so many times it’s not even surprising anymore. #anythingformoney”

July 11 : Paris Jackson Raises Concerns Over Estate’s “Irregular Payments”

July 14 : TJ Jackson : “I want to give a shout out to the true ones in the MJ fandom who not only always had my uncle’s back but have ALWAYS looked through facts and used critical thinking. Thank you for your love of my uncle. It means the world to us… For everyone else, two things to always remember…

My uncle has always been 1000% innocent. He was simply too good for this world. Giving, helping and healing others with his heart was his language. Sadly this made him an easy target for those who wanted to exploit, extort and use him during life and even after in death.

His family has his back. The world sees him as a legend/icon but we see him first as an uncle, brother, father and son that we’ll 4ever miss. So for those who quickly question his family to discredit us while propping up non family, I hope this is a lesson learned. #MJForLife”

July 15 : Michael Jackson’s Estate Defends Legal Fees Amid Paris Jackson’s Concerns

According to filings, the estate argued that the compensation to their legal teams was entirely justified, citing the attorneys’ extensive experience, industry relationships, and their crucial role in securing major wins for Michael’s legacy, including the more than $287 million return on the EMI investment when Sony acquired the estate’s stake in 2018. The executors emphasized that these lawyers were “instrumental and critical,” pointing out that such expertise in the entertainment and international music publishing world could not simply be measured by hourly billing.

Lionsgate & Universal’s Michael Jackson Biopic ‘Michael’ Moves To Pre-Summer 2026 (Deadline) : EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate and Universal‘s Michael Jackson biopic Michael is officially moving to Friday, April 24, and that’s a global theatrical release. At the same time, we hear that a second movie about Jackson remains in development. The delay with Michael has been twofold, one being its length — there was a first cut in excess of 3½ hours. There also have been reports that the initial cut of the movie made references to 13-year old Jordan Chandler, who accused Jackson of molestation and who the pop singer settled with for $20M in 1994 with no admission of guilt. While the screenplay by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan was developed, approved by the estate and shot to include Chandler, after production wrapped, it was revealed there was an agreement for him not to be included. Hence the production had to go back and re-approach the material.

July 24 : Michael Jackson Biopic Coming as One Film in April 2026, Will Probably Celebrate Music and Avoid Legal Problems : A decision has finally been made about the Michael Jackson biopic. Lionsgate has set a release for April 24, 2026. “Michael” will be one film, not two. It will likely be a celebration of Jackson’s music and avoid the legal troubles that plagued him starting in 1993.

However, it is also listed as a tentpole for the 2027 fiscal calendar as a major earner, which is something to pay attention to in regards to the longstanding rumors that Michael might be divided into two parts as film tentpoles can be films with multiple movies/franchises. September 04 : Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris criticises ‘sugar-coated’ biopic about her father : Paris Jackson has criticised an upcoming biopic of her father, Michael Jackson, saying she had “zero per cent involvement” in the film, which she suggests has been “sugar-coated” in a broader swipe at Hollywood biopics that contain “full-blown lies”.On Tuesday night Paris took to Instagram to reject Domingo’s version of events. “Don’t be telling people I was ‘helpful’ on the set of a movie I had zero per cent involvement in lol that is so weird,” the 27-year-old singer and actor wrote. “I read one of the first drafts of the script and gave my notes about what was dishonest / didn’t sit right with me, and when they didn’t address it, I moved on with my life. “Not my monkeys, not my circus. God bless and God speed.” She later expanded on her comments in follow-up Instagram stories, saying she had been explicitly told the production would not address her notes. “So I just butted out and left it alone because it’s not my project,” she said. “They’re going to make whatever they’re going to make. A big reason why I haven’t said anything up until this point is because I know a lot of you guys are gonna be happy with it. “A big section of the film panders to a very specific section of my dad’s fandom that still lives in the fantasy, and they’re gonna be happy with it.” Paris continued to critique the “sugar-coated” Hollywood biopic model generally: “The narrative is being controlled and there’s a lot of inaccuracy and there’s a lot of just full-blown lies. At the end of the day, that doesn’t really fly with me. Go enjoy it. Do whatever. Leave me out of it.”

Carey described the track as “not in the vault, it’s right there,” indicating that it’s ready for release. She expressed her frustration, stating, “I love it, I’m so upset that it’s not coming out on this album, like it should be on there.” She further mentioned that every time she played the song for someone, their reaction was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing it as “one of his classics.” In the collaboration, Carey added new background vocals to Michael’s original track.”

October 06 : “The MJ movie is ready for its close-up: At this point, the highest-stakes film of next year may be Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic that, due to the rights issue with a former child molestation accuser, had to be totally reconceived by director Antoine Fuqua and writer John Logan. Additional photography has now wrapped, and the film ends after Jackson’s triumphant rise to fame in the ’80s. So all the footage of MJ’s later King of Pop (and scandal-plagued) years, including two weeks of shooting at Neverland Ranch, now owned by Ron Burkle, is unusable. Producer Graham King’s plan is to make a second Michael movie that would include all that stuff, plus a significant amount of additional, yet-to-be-shot footage with stars Jaafar Jackson, Colman Domingo, and Miles Teller, but that will now depend on—yes, you guessed it—how the film is received by audiences next April. If it’s a hit, or if all signs are pointing that direction, they greenlight part two, and if not, producers eat all that unused footage. (Remember, the Jackson estate is paying for costs associated with the production debacle.) Lionsgate and Universal, which has international rights to the film, will attach the Michael trailer to Wicked: For Good in November.”

Mark Geragos files a legal memorandum on behalf of Frank Cascio, opposing the Michael Jackson Estate’s petition to compel arbitration. In essence, Geragos argues that the supposed settlement and confidentiality agreement the Estate relies on is void and unenforceable under California law and public policy. He claims it was designed to silence victims of Michael Jackson’s alleged sexual abuse and therefore violates statutes prohibiting nondisclosure agreements related to sexual misconduct. The brief alleges the Estate coerced and manipulated the Cascio family—longtime associates of Jackson—into signing the agreement in 2019–2020 under emotional duress and without legal counsel. It accuses the Estate of breaching the agreement itself by publicly filing confidential details and misusing the court system to “smear” Cascio. Geragos asks the court to deny arbitration, void the agreement entirely, and stay any pending arbitration, framing the petition as a bad-faith effort to suppress victims and protect the Estate’s financial and reputational interests.

November 01 : The Financial Times publishes a long piece on John Branca where he talks about the biopic : “Branca wants this movie to be big. Bigger than Queen’s biopic, or Elvis’s, or Bob Dylan’s. He expects it will “leave them in the dust”. But right now, that’s far from certain. Strewn across his desk are term sheets with the movie’s backers, Lionsgate and Universal Pictures, which have poured $155mn into the project, according to people familiar with the deal. “If you’re in the middle of the NBA championship series and, you know, it’s a close game, you’re not sitting there thinking, ‘Oh, I really enjoy this’,” Branca says, sighing. “The music business is so easy compared to the movie business.” (…) Branca tells me the movie “is not defensive at all”. “We’re not out to declare Michael’s innocence. The aim is to tell Michael’s story. What was his journey? Who was he? Michael deserves to tell his own story, because you’ve got all these creeps telling their story and it ain’t true.” (…) Branca’s insistence on loyalty has already shaped the film. “After Leaving Neverland, I sensed a wavering force among the first people attached to the movie,” he says. “And unless you understand that Michael’s innocent, we can’t have you.” Taylor Hackford, originally in line to direct, was dropped, according to Branca. Graham King, producer of Bohemian Rhapsody, came in soon after. Lionsgate’s movie chair Adam Fogelson told me, “The specific reasons for some of the [script] changes here are unusual. There’s no question about that.” But he pushed back on the idea that Branca or the estate are steering the film. “We were significantly involved,” Fogelson said. “While it is absolutely true that the estate has an involvement in this, I think the idea that they creatively control the project is a flawed premise. This was not designed to be simply a puff piece.”

‘Michael’ Teaser Delivers 30M+ Views In First Six Hours; Lionsgate Motion Picture Chair Provides Update On Potential Sequel : In its first six hours after dropping today, the first teaser for Michael from Lionsgate racked up over 30 million views, 50% more than what John Wick: Chapter 4 delivered in its first six hours. Lionsgate had to break up Michael into two parts, not only because of the original cut’s 3 1/2 hour length, but also because footage was shot centering around one of Jackson’s accusers; their settlement with the singer’s estate guaranteed they’d never be dramatized. The Jackson estate overlooked this detail when putting Michael into development. Addressing the optionality for a second half of Michael, Fogelson replied, “Since the last time we worked together on an earnings call, we’ve had the great pleasure of seeing the director’s cut of the first film, and it is exceptional.” He continued, “While we’re not yet ready to confirm plans for a second film, I can tell you that the creative team is hard at work making sure that we’re in a position to deliver more Michael soon after we release the first film.” “People have been waiting a long time for this,” said Fogelson about Michael, “I think people are stunned with Jaafar’s (Jackson’s) performance.”

Knowing that, I felt immense pressure to sign as well, to avoid causing more conflict within the family during this unbelievably difficult chapter.” Cascio said he has struggled with reading comprehension since being diagnosed with dyslexia in fifth grade and struggled to understand the contract: “I had difficulty understanding many of its terms, particularly the legal concepts.”

November 14 : Paris Jackson Vows to Press On After Judge Dismisses Key Claims in Estate Dispute : “On November 10, Judge Mitchell L. Beckloff granted the Estate’s special motion to strike most of Paris’s petition, ruling that many of her challenges were based on filings protected under the First Amendment and California’s anti-SLAPP laws. The judge also ordered Paris to cover the Estate’s legal fees, a clear procedural win for Branca and McClain.”But Paris is far from conceding. A spokesperson told that the ruling “is limited to minor procedural issues and does not change the facts,” adding that she will be submitting an updated filing soon. “The pattern of behavior displayed by the executors and their attorneys raises significant red flags, and Paris will continue working to ensure her family is treated fairly.”

December 03 : Jermaine announces in Monaco a plan to create a museum dedicated to the works of his younger brother Michael, particularly dozens of paintings made by the pop singer, who died in 2009. The location has not yet been decided, nor has the opening date, but the collection of paintings and memorabilia gathered by the family is ready, Jermaine Jackson, 70, said on the sidelines of The Monegasque magazine’s Christmas gala at the Yacht Club of the small Mediterranean principality. The museum will be funded by Jackson Family Legacy Investments, a company created by Jermaine Jackson to pass on the family’s cultural and artistic heritage to future generations. While the museum is intended to grow over time, the initial collection includes around 200 works attributed to Michael: 120 paintings as well as photos, sculptures, and more. “Michael was also an incredible painter,” the older brother said, adding that he has assembled an entire collection of family memorabilia, from their beginnings in the 1960s up to Michael’s death.

December 19 : The US Department of Justice released several photos as part of the Epstein files and one photo featured Michael Jackson. In the photo, MJ is posing with former President Bill Clinton and Diana Ross in April 2002. There also appears to be three “victims” in the photo. December 20 : “Reports claiming Diana Ross was spotted in Jeffrey Epstein’s files has surfaced, but new reports reveal that the singer was with her son Evan Ross,” Hollywood Unlocked wrote on Instagram along with the actual photo, which was taken back in 2003. Evan then took to the comments section to react. “Thank you. These people r rediculous [sic],” he wrote.

Grace Rwaramba on her Facebook page : “This photo is a perfect example of how easy it is to weave a grand story from nothing. I remember this moment vividly. We were in a trailer outside the Apollo Theater in New York in April 2002. Michael was preparing to perform at the “Every Vote Counts” national voter registration and fundraiser for the Democratic Party. I was off to the side with Bigi. Consider how the photo was manipulated to pull Michael into the Epstein mess. Now, major news outlets around the globe are on the case. Huh. I have seen this movie before.”

Taj Jackson on X : “Thank you to all the MJ fans for once again quickly and accurately setting the record straight. I know how tiring and frustrating it can be to deal with media propaganda and smear campaigns aimed squarely at my uncle. Especially when it’s plain to see he is constantly being used as a distraction, scapegoat and/or smoke screen for others. And to the trolls, trashy media, haters and click baiters… This is not our first rodeo and collectively our voices have proven, despite whatever lies you try to spread, the truth with always win out in the end.”

Prince & Paris do not comment publicly on this matter nor Diana Ross or the Michael Jackson Estate.

The Steve Harvey Morning Show 2004

On Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at 8:00AM, P.S.T., Michael Jackson appeared on The Steve Harvey Morning Show, 100.3 / The Beat, a Radio One station, regarding Eminem’s video. In an exclusive interview with Steve Harvey, Michael Jackson made the following statement:

I would like to thank you, Steve, Radio One, the African-American community, my fans from around the world, and some of the members of the media, for the support that you have given to me. I would also like to thank Mr. Robert Johnson, Chairman and Founder of BET for pulling the Eminem video from BET’s airplay. I appreciate very much the love and support that you all have shown me. I am very angry at Eminem’s depiction of me in his video. I feel that it is outrageous and disrespectful. It is one thing to spoof, but it is another to be demeaning and insensitive.

I’ve admired Eminem as a artist, and was shocked by this. The video was inappropriate and disrespectful to me, my children, my family, and the community at large. It is my hope that the other networks will take BET’s lead and pull it.

Keep Hope Alive With Rev. Jesse Jackson

March 27, 2005 : Michael gives a one hour long interview to Rev. Jesse Jackson which is broadcast live on the Internet on the radio show “Keep Hope Alive With Rev. Jesse Jackson”.

Jesse Jackson Interviews Michael
On Sunday morning, Rev. Jesse Jackson conducted an hour long interview with Michael.

Jesse Jackson: Good morning. God Bless you. Happy Easter. Welcome to ‘Keep Hope Alive’ with Reverend Jesse Jackson radio program. This is Reverend Jesse Jackson and this morning I wish you a happy and glorious Easter.
[…]

But what can I say today about our special guest this morning. This legendary singer, dancer, songwriter — extraordinary — has transfixed the role for more than 40 years. He became an instant star at age eleven. Is the front man in Motown’s phenomenally successful family act, the Jackson Five. One of the best selling groups of all time. Hickering off their Motown tenure in 1969 with the unprecedented feat of four consecutive number one singles. Who can forget ‘I Want You Back’, ‘ABC’, ‘Mama’s Pearl’, or ‘I’ll Be There’?

Where were you when you were having barely turned thirteen? He began his solo career. Released a successful string of solo singles including ‘Got To Be There’, ‘Rockin’ Robin’’ and ‘Ben’. We’ve all marveled as he continued to scale at unprecedented heights with the success of three of the biggest selling albums of all time: ‘Off the Wall’, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’. Indeed, ‘Thriller’ is the biggest selling album of all time. Having sold 51 million copies world-wide, beyond the numbers how important and pyridine shifting has Jackson recording and shattering record, how… How phenomenal has it really been? What a phenomenal feat.

As producer Quincy Jones told Time-magazine. “Black music had to play second fiddle for a long time.” In the spirit is the whole motor of pop. He has connected with every soul in the world. He has been proclaimed the biggest selling artist of all time. The singer most awarded entertainer the world has ever known. The most popular artist in the history of show business. And not so modestly, the world’s most famous man. And of course, the ‘King of Pop’.

And still our world goes on, on about this genius, about this icon for ages. Brothers and sisters, members of the ‘Keep Hope Alive’-family, today we have the rare opportunity to take a journey from Gary to greatness. Hear the ‘King of Pop’ share the story of his life as only he can tell it. It’s with great pride and pleasure that I bring to you this morning Michael Jackson from California. Good morning, Michael.

Michael: Good morning, Jesse. How are you?

Jesse: Good. Good. Good. Good. It’s good to hear you there. Many listening ears around America and the world for our conversation today.

Michael: Yes.

Jesse: Good. Good.

Michael: Good.

Jesse: We’ll, my friends, let’s get this conversation started. We have a shared conversation with our nation. Stay right there. You don’t want to miss this live-conversation with the ‘King of Pop’, Michael Jackson. We’ll be right back with ‘Keep Hope Alive’ with the Reverend Jesse Jackson.

[Break]

Jesse: Welcome to ‘Keep Hope Alive’ with Reverend Jesse Jackson. Our regular Sunday morning talk show. Today we have a phenomenal guest in Michael Jackson. Michael has taken this phenomenal journey from ground zero to outer space. Good morning, Michael.

Michael: Good morning, Jesse. How are you?

Jesse: Good. Good. Good. Remember when we met on 47th Street way, way many years ago. Your father brought you and the guys by the office in your station wagon and U-Haul. You were performing at the Regal Theatre. Do you remember that?

Michael: Yes, I do remember. It was a long time ago. I was just very little.

Jesse: What do you remember about that period?

Michael: Oh, I remember what we were wearing kinda like dashikis [sic] and bell-bottoms pants and I just remember the love from the public was very great and accepting of what we had to offer. And the support from, you know, the people from the times was just beautiful, the black people was fantastic. You were always very kind to us as well.

Jesse: Good. Good. Did your mom make those outfits?

Michael: Yes she did. She always made all of our clothes. My mother would sew and stitch everything. Everything we wore before really making it at Motown.

Jesse: I remember so well that uh Julius Griffin and up your dad came over and asked if you guys could be a warm-up act at Expo, and we had to make room for you in our schedule and you guys stole the show.

Michael laughs: I remember those shows. You had a big Afro at that time.

Jesse: Don’t remind people of that, Michael.

[Michael laughs]

Jesse: You did so very well. During that time you were being whipped up by Motown. Who discovered you for Motown?

Michael: Well, in complete truth, it was Gladys Knight and a guy named Bobby Taylor. And they were on the bill of some of the shows who were doing that you would see like… you would do a show and there would be like twenty or thirty acts. It was pretty much like Bonneville. You would do just a certain number of songs and you would go off. They were always on these shows. And they would watch us and they were so impressed with what we were doing. And Barry Gordy wasn’t interested at first. But eventually he loved us and wanted to sign us. And after being signed, and uh, since Diana Ross was their biggest star at the time, that he used her as the vehicle to… you know… introduce us to the public. The first album was called ‘Diana Ross Presents the Jackson Five’.

Jesse: At that time, who were your favorite artists?

Michael: Oh God, I loved Diana Ross and uh, I loved James Brown, I still do. I love all these artists… still to this day. I love Jackie Wilson. The real show stoppers. You know the real entertainers.

Jesse: Did you did…

Michael interrupts: Sammy Davis, Jr, I loved him as well [laughs].

Jesse: Did you get any of your moves from Jackie Wilson?

Michael: Oh yes, of course! All these artists inspired me very much. I couldn’t help but be inspired by these great entertainers.

Jesse: A little later, remember we were out in Los Angeles and at that time Suzanne dePasse was your… the godmother for the group and she had you at Fred Seigel’s shopping for some, shopping for some jeans.

Michael: Yes! Remember Suzanne dePasse, she was so wonderful, you know. She was pretty much our manager with my father at the time and with Tony Jones. They were all wonder people. I thank them from the bottom of my heart, you know.

Jesse: She was such a wonderful person, and she remains, she’s so top-notch in that what she does.

Michael: Yes, she is. She was very helpful and instrumental in the early days of our career, and she remains a friend. And I do, I do…I miss her. I haven’t seen her in awhile. But she’s a wonderful person… so is Berry Gordy.

Jesse: Michael, in this whole developmental period. I call it ground zero like Gary and the Regal Theatre and the Expo and early meeting of Barry Gordy and Motown, would you reflect, what was out of this period that you remember the most?

Michael: Which period is this now?

Jessie: Kinda like this period of Gary, to the Regal Theatre, to Expo to meeting Gladys Knight, to going to Motown. From what about this period that stands out the most in your mind?

Michael: This period for me which stands out is… because I was so young around that time. I was like eight, eight or nine. I just remember the environment, what it was like, all the music I was hearing. Because my father played guitar. My uncle played guitar. Everyday they would come over, and you know they would play great music. And we would start to perform to the music. I remember seeing marching bands go down the street. I remember the rhythm of the band and the beats of the drum. And every sound around me seem to record in my head and start making rhythms and dancing. I use to dance to the rhythm of the washing machine. My mother went to the corner store to wash the clothes. I would dance to the rhythm and people would crowd around. I remember those kind of stories. They would crowd around pretty much and watch me. Those kind of little things. It’s just reflections, really.

Jesse: Well, you remember, you said that Jackie Wilson, and James Brown and Sammy Davis were heroes. Did you ever see them perform?

Michael: Yes, of course I did, and they were friends of mine. All these great artists. That’s why I was so lucky. I was just such a little kid, looking up to these people. We were real catatonic, awestruck with their talent. And not only did I get to see it, but I got to see it close up right on the side curtain, on the side of the wings. I got to know these great artists. These were the best entertainers in the world. They were show stoppers. And I would have to go onstage sometime after them, you know. It was amazing!

Jesse: But the thing is that at first I remember Tito and Jermaine… you were like so little, so small. You was part of the Jackson Five. At what point did you know that you realize you were a show stopper?

Michael: You know, when you have a special ability, you don’t realize it because you think everybody else has the same gift that you have. So you don’t realize it. When I used to sing at such a young age, people were so inspired by my singing and they loved it. I didn’t realize why they were clapping or crying or start to scream. I really truly didn’t, Jesse. And it just uhm, just later on in life, people would come up to me and say, you know, “Do you realize you have a special gift or you have a special talent?”. I just remember from my mother who is very religious always telling us to always thank God, to thank Jehovah God for your talent, your ability. You know, it’s not from…, it’s not our doing, it’s from above. So we were always humbled by people would come with accolades or, you know, adulations or whatever it is. You know, it was a beautiful thing.

Jesse: When did you stop going to school formerly?

Michael: Oh, I was very young. I think it was… oh boy, hmmm… I think it was the fifth, fifth, fourth or fifth I think. Then I had tutoring the rest of my life. Because we did so many tours and concerts and TV shows and things, all the albums and all the recordings, because we would have three hours of schooling, then we would do the concerts, then we travel to another state or another country. Then by that time we would do some concerts again and then it would be time to record the next J5 album, then after the J5 album, it was time for another Michael Jackson album. So, in my youth, as a little kid, I was always busy. I remember across the street from Motown recording studio, there was a park. I used to hear the roar of the kids and the throwing of the football and the basketball. I remember going to the studio everyday, and I was just feeling kinda sad, because I wanted to go to that park. But I knew I had a different job to do, you know, so going in and make the records. All day untill late at night, then you would go to sleep, then you were up for the next day, just the same regimentation.

Jesse: Does that insintu-… you missed a certain body of childhood experience. How did you compensate for this loss of ordinary childhood experience?

Michael: I — I — It’s true. I didn’t have a childhood. But, when you don’t have a childhood like people like myself and other child stars, I would think you try to compensate for the loss. So later on you try to catch up. That’s why you see, like you may see a theme park or amusement rides, that type of environment at my home. But what I like to do is help other children who are less fortunate than I am. You know kids who are terminally ill, kids with diseases, poor children from the inner cities, you know the ghettos, to let them see the mountains, or to let see or go on the rides, or to watch a movie or to have some ice cream or something.

Jesse: Of course one of the difference about you Michael, you did have a family. How many of, how many is in the family?

Michael: The immediate Jackson family?

Jesse: Yeah.

Michael: There were originally ten of us. There’s nine. There’s nine. And my mother Katherine and Joseph Jackson are still alive. We all were born in Gary, Indiana.

Jesse: Well in that setting, did Tito and Jermaine beat up on you and give you some normal childhood experiences as a younger brother?

Michael: We would be on tour. We would go to Miami. We would, you know, be able to use the beaches. We were so popular at that time. Wherever the Jackson Five would go, there would be a mob scenes. We couldn’t go in the shopping center or anywhere, because there were kids screaming. We had hit records back to back to back. We were playing these arenas all across America. And so it was difficult! We would did get to have a chance to have some fun, but in the hotel. We would have pillow fight in the hotel or if we wanted to swim after hours, we would swim in the pool downstairs. You know that type of thing.

Jesse: Who would win the pillow fights?

Michael: Pretty much Tito or Jackie. [laughs] They were the oldest.

Jessie: You know you kind of grown from this kind of phenomenal rise to the artist that has sold the most records in history. You look back from that period that we call Ground Zero to the period of your maturing in writing. Who was your greatest influence in learning to write? You write so well!

Michael: My greatest influence learning to write music… I think this is when I was lucky. In my opinion, I came into the Factory of the greatest song writers at that time in the sixties. Holland, Dozier, Holland of Motown. These two, these three guys were phenomenal. You know, Lamont Dozier, Eddie Holland. These guys were amazing. They wrote all the great Supreme hits and the Four Top hits. They were just amazing. And I got to learn and work with these guys. And I love of course some of the Beatles stuff. I love the Beatles music actually. I love a lot of the show tune writers. Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein and Leonard Lowe and Harold Arland, Johnny Mercer and these kind of show tune. ’Cause I love melody. I love the great Irish pub songs. I love English melody. And the rhythms of Africans. Which is the roots of rhythm. That’s my favorite music. That’s my favorite music of the world because all music is defined from that. Africa is music. It is the origin. It is the dawn of existence. You can’t avoid that. It is in everything that is about myself.

Jesse: So much as you went through these stages and you began to write, sing and dance, did you ever have like a dancing coach?

Michael: No, I never studied dancing before. It always became natural for me. Whenever I was little, any music would start, they couldn’t sit me down. They couldn’t tie me down actually. Even to this day, if anyone played a beat, I’ll start kicking in and making counter rhythms to the beat that I’m hearing. It’s just a natural instinct. I never studied. And Fred Astaire who was a good friend of mine, and Gene Kelly, they used to always marvel at my ability for dance. When I was a little kid, Fred Astaire used to always tell me how he felt in his heart that I would be a special star. I used to just look at him thinking what are you talking about? [laughs] But uh, you could see, you know.

Jesse: Michael, where did the ‘Moonwalk’ come from? [laughs]

Michael: The ‘Moonwalk’ is a dance that I would love to take credit for but I can’t because I have to be completely honest here. These black children in the ghettos are, they have the most phenomenal rhythm of anybody on the Earth. I’m not joking. I learned, I get a lot of ideas from watching these black children. They have perfect rhythm. From just riding through Harlem, I remember in the early, you know, late 70s, early 80s, I would see these kids dancing on the street and I saw a kid doing these, uh sliding backwards kinda like an illusion dancing I call it. And I took a mental picture of it, a mental movie of it. And I went into my room upstairs in Encino, and I would just start doing the dance, and create and perfect it. But, it definitely started within the black culture. No doubt. And that’s where it comes from.

Jesse: Well then, connected to that piece when you were dancing, did you ever watch Don Cornelius Soul Train?

Michael: Oh I love that show. Are you kidding? Of course I did. I would wait for the Soul Train line. They would have a line that they would make, like a wall of people and the dancer would come through the middle, dancing to the song. It would give them a chance to showcase their talent and what they could do with their body creatively. I used to watch that catatonically, just watching that! I was mesmerized by uh, and studied the rhythms and the dancing of course. Of course I watched it. [laughs]

Jesse: Michael, you know as you look back, you kinda make this kind of transition from ground zero in Gary and you begin to ascend, and you became, in many ways, a man in a child’s body and I mean, you never gained any weight! How did you manage?

Michael: [laughs] Well, I’ve never been a great eater, I’ve, uh… to tell a little secret, I hate to tell it, uh, I’ve never been ahhh, great eater or a great admirer of food, even though I appreciate food and the gift of food and how God has given us food to eat, but my mother has always had a hard time with me, all my life, uh, forcing me to eat. Elizabeth Taylor used to feed me… hand feed me at times, because I, I, I… I do have a problem with eating, but, I…,I do my very best, and I am eating, yes I am! So I don’t — Please, uh, I don’t want anyone to think I’m starving, I am not…

Jesse: But you’ve…

Michael: My health is perfect actually.

Jesse: You’ve maintained this weight man, that’s what people is most jealous of and so excited about…

Michael: No no, my health is perfect actually, I’m a great believer in holistic natural foods and eating and herbs and things, you know, God’s medicine, instead of Western chemicals, not those things, you know.

Jesse: You know, Michael, as you look back on this phenomenal career, you — you remember at least the 5th grade in Gary and how you guys became a big hit so quickly, what do you remember, what is to you, the high point, you know… I’ve asked people all week long the high point for them — it may have been ‘Thriller’, it may have been ‘Beat It’, it may have been some performance, what for you represents the kind of ah, high point?

Michael: Well, one of the great high points, ahem, I would have to say… because I remember before ’82, in the early ’80s… I had done an album called ‘Off the Wall’ — it was an important point for me because I had just the movie ‘The Wiz’ and I wanted to express myself as a writer, as an ah, artist, you know to write my own music, do the music, pretty much put it together. And Quincy Jones, who I’ve loved — I was fortunate to work with him and I love this man, he is very gifted. But I was writing these songs at the time, ‘Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough’, you know, ‘Shake Your Body To the Ground’, you know ‘Billie Jean’, and ‘Beat It’. All these songs were written at this time. Ahem, so I pretty much was setting mental goals of what I want to do as an artist and I uh, it was a high point for me, during the uh, the winning of the Grammys for the ‘Off the Wall’ album, but I wasn’t happy. Because I wanted to do much more than that… I wasn’t happy with, uh ahem, the way it was accepted, even though it was a hugh success, it was the biggest selling album for a solo artist at that time. It was over 10 million, and for a Black solo artist. And I said for the next album, I refuse for them to ignore, and that’s when I set my heart [clears throat], on writing the ‘Thriller’ album and I really said I…

Jesse: What gave rise to the ‘Thriller’?

Michael: Pardon?

Jesse: What gave rise to the ‘Thriller’?

Michael: What gave rise to ‘Thriller’ was that the time, was pretty much disappointed and hurt — I lived in an area called Encino, and I used to see signs of graffiti saying “Disco Sucks” and “Disco is this” and “Disco is that” and disco was just a happy medium of making people dance at the time, but it was so popular, that the uhem, uhem, society was turning against it. I said, I’m just going to do a great album, because I love the album Tchaikovsky did, ‘The Nutcracker Suite’, it’s an album where every song is like a great song. I said I wanted to do an album where every song is like a hit record, and that’s what pretty much the hit ‘Thriller’ spawn from that… And I did that album and it made, er, all time history. The Guinness Book of World Records proclaimed that it was the largest selling album of all time and it’s still to this day and I’m, er, I would say that it was a pinnacle, that was a — I’d reached a certain zenith point, I would think, but I still wasn’t pleased after that. I was always wanting to do more, wanting to do more.

Jesse: And somewhat you…

Michael: And the ‘Victory’ tour came along.

Jesse: And somewhat you reached out, before we get to the ‘Victory’ tour, and we had this phenomenal crisis of people dying and you used your celebrity to pull artists together to do ‘We Are the World’.

Michael: Yes.

Jesse: What was that like?

Michael: ‘We Are the World’ was a great project, because ah, Quincy Jones called me on the phone and he asked me to write a song, for ahem, for ah, ahem, the devastation that was going on in Africa. And Ethiopia was hit very badly, and he knew my love for the people over there, because I would go to Africa all the time. I, I loved the culture, I love the people, I love what they represent, and so I put this song together, he said let Lionel Richie help you [clears throat], so Lionel came over. We started, you know, putting ideas together, and ahem, we talked most of the time because we pretty much caught up with old times because I’ve been knowing Lionel Richie for many, many years, and ahem, so Lionel and I put something together, but I wasn’t happy with it completely, so after that, I just went into the studio myself and pretty much completed it and finished it and packaged it and did all the music, put everything together and turned it in. Quincy was very impressed with it and he said “this is the song, we’re going to go with it”, and we put the song out and it became the biggest selling song single in history and it raised a lot of money. It was called ‘USA For Africa’ and we enheightened the public awareness on the subject. It was relief for Africa, it was a beautiful thing. We gave a certain percentage to America and the majority share went to Africa. It was a great, great thing.

Jesse: Reverend Jessie Jackson, ‘Keep Hope Alive’, our very special guest for our edition today, with Michael Jackson. So many people are listening all around the nation, all around the world — just a kinda family talk with Michael. I’ve known him since he was like seven years old, but the entire family, at some point in time, his father, driving a station wagon with a U-haul brought the guys by our office and asked if they would be a warm up act for Expo and of course, they were a warm up act, but in fact, they set it on fire and the Expo was never quite the same again. Matter of fact Michael, when we did the film ‘Save the Children’ that was a big hit, too.

Michael: Yes it was, yes it was… I remember those times… it was a little cloudy, but I do remember, Jesse, and I remember how wonderful you were to us and uh, I remember the love from the audience and I could hear the screaming of the crowd. and I could see all of the Afros and the dashikis and it was just a wonderful time and it was for a wonderful cause…

Jesse: On that show, it was Marvin Gaye, and Roberta Flack, and…

Michael: Ah!!!

Jesse: … and the O’Jays…

Michael: Wow!!!

Jesse: … and the Staples Singers and…

Michael: Whow.

Jesse: … Cannonball Adderley, it was a huge deal.

Michael: That’s amazing. An amazing list of people, that’s some of the greatest talent ever — that’s amazing.

Jesse: We going to re-release the ‘Save the Children’ sometime soon and people who missed that period will really enjoy watching it. Michael, you know, when we think about the kind of rise from Gary, Indiana, you were but a child and you went through your teenaged years being tutored along, but then I remember another phase, I, I think is a another phase, when the ‘Victory’ Tour occurred. At that time, you were a full grown. All of your brothers and sisters were full grown and we met in Kansas City, remember? With your family?

Michael: Yes.

Jesse: … We all had prayer together, ahem…

Michael: Yes we did.

Jesse: The ‘Victory’ Tour. Describe that season.

Michael: The ‘Victory’ Tour was one of the great pinnacles of my success because ‘Thriller’ had won more Grammys than any other album in the history of — of music, and it created so much phenomenon and such adulation and notoriety on a universal level, and it was very, very hard to go anyway, do anything without press and helicopters and people sleeping in your bushes and hiding in your trees. And it was just a phenomenal pinnacle, it really was and after all of that, I announced that I was going to tour. And to tour and perform those songs live, in front of an audience so the world was going just really, really wild at that time. And we did this tour that broke records all over America and we played stadiums, for instance, the, the setting record at Dodgers Stadium, before we played it, it was one show and a half by Elton John. We did 8 shows there — sold out, and they wanted another 2 — so we did 8 sold out shows there. [Clears throat]. This happened all over America. The first city was Kansas City and that’s where we met with you, Jessie, and I remember you coming to the suite and you gave prayer and it was a beautiful thing and ah, it was an amazing time, it really was. My dreams had come true.

Jesse: Good. Good. But you know Michael, in this life, they say some rain must fall and you’ve had these seasons of just ahem, tailwinds like pushing you forward. But life is of such that’s not a straight line, ah, some argue you either in a storm, or you are just leaving a storm, and going to a storm and it’s not difficult to handle the sunshine of bright skies, tailwinds days, but then these headwinds come that kind of uh, test what you really are made of, the kind of test your metal, your true grit. And so you’ve had these high points. What do you consider to be the low point?

Michael: Probably the low point, the lowest point, emotionally and experience, is probably what I’m going through [clears throat].

Jesse: In the sense — what, what about it has kind of stung you?

Michael: What about it… has what?

Jesse: Has stung you, so to speak.

Michael: Has, … Use the word again…

Jesse: Stung. You said it’s kind of hurt you, you said the low point.

Michael: Yeah, just the pain of what I’m going through, where I’m being accused of something, where I know in my heart and in my experiences in life I’m totally innocent, it’s just very painful. But this has been kind of, ah, a pattern among Black luminaries in this country.

Jesse: And so since, you have been going through this and you feel the pain, you think it’s a kind of pattern? How are you handling it spiritually? Because you go from being held so high and now your very character, your integrity is under attack. How your handling it?

Michael: I’m handling it by using other people in the past who have gone through this sort of thing. Mandela’s story is giving me a lot of strength, what he’s gone through and the Jack Johnson story was on PBS — it’s on DVD now. It’s called ‘Unforgivable Blackness’. It’s an amazing story about this man from 1910 who was the heavyweight champion of the world and bust into a society that didn’t want to accept his position and his lifestyle, and what they put him through, and how they changed laws to imprison the man. They put him away behind bars just to get him some kind of way. And… and Muhammad Ali’s story. All these — the Jesse Owens story. All these stories that I can go back in history and read about give me strength, Jessie. Your story gives me strength, what you went through. Because I didn’t, I came in at the tail end of the Civil Rights Movement. I’m a, ah I, I didn’t get the really, I’m a 70s child, really, but I got in on the tail end of the Civil Rights Movement and I got to see it, you know?

Jesse: And so, you — you — you — you had these hits, ahem, and people that you have embraced are now facing you in court on a daily basis. How does your spirit handle that?

Michael: Ah, I gain strength from God. I believe in Jehovah God very much and ah, and I gain strength from the fact that I know I’m innocent. None of these stories are true. They are totally fabricated, and it’s very sad, it’s very, very painful. And I pray a lot and that’s how I deal with it and I’m a strong person, I’m a warrior. And I know what’s inside of me. I’m a fighter. But it’s very painful. At the end of the day, I’m still human, you know, I’m still a human being. So it does hurt very, very, very much.

Jesse: You and I were watching, you know you and I were talking last week on the phone and — and there was this rhythm of the trial, which we will not get into at all today, but then they shifted from the focus of the trial to say you are broke. And last week, people are calling in, all around the nation saying, “Is Michael broke”? Michael, are you broke?

Michael: That’s not true at all. It’s one of their many schemes to embarrass me and to just drag me through mud. And it’s the same pattern, like I told you before with these other people in the past. The same pattern. Don’t believe, you know, this is tabloid, sensationalized kind of gossip.

Jesse: Well, how did the money issue get in it in the first place? A number of people called and they thought it was about the Sony catalog. What’s — what’s in that catalog?

Michael: In my Sony Catalog, is all the Beatles music, ahem, all of, you know, Little Richart’s music, I own,I own Sly and the Family Stone, I — I own such a volume of so many, I own Elvis — so many Elvis songs and it’s a huge catalog, it’s very valuable, it’s worth a lot of money. And there is a big fight going on right now, as we speak about that. Now, I can’t say whether or not — I can’t comment on it, but there’s a lot of conspiracy, I’ll say that — conspiracy going on as we speak.

Jesse: It was suggested by a number of your friends and family members was that this fight really is more about this catalog issue than it is any thing else. Do you believe that?

Michael: Well, you know, I don’t want to comment. I don’t want to make a comment, Jessie ah… it’s a real delicate issue and uh, I’ll let you, I’ll let you make the comment on that one.

Jesse: Let me shift this to this extent. Ahem, since so many people are listening and there have been so many opinions — I was in London a couple of weeks ago, and 24/7 was Michael Jackson all-day- and all-night-long and the day that you came to the hospital late [to court], you said you were injured. What happened that day?

Michael: I was coming, out of the shower and I — I — I fell. And all my body weight, and I’m pretty fragile, all my body weight fell against my rib cage. And I pretty much, er, er, I bruised my lung very badly. My lung is on the right, it’s very [sp], it’s, I’m in pain as we speak. And I’ve been going to court everyday in immense pain and agonizing pain. And I sit there — and I’m strong, I try to be as strong as I can. So I can, ahh, but what we are looking for is the coughing of blood now. The doctor said I should — he said it’s still very dangerous as we speak, and if I cough the blood, he said it’s a very dangerous thing, so we’re, we’re still watching it very closely.

Jesse: The cynics said you were faking. And it seems that the judge is [unaudible] will not even willing to believe you, even though you had just left the hospital.

Michael: You know, the — there’s no faking with this at all. I mean there was a scan done and you could see, uhhh, the swelling on my whole rib cage, I mean, uh, it was you could see it and it’s bright, bright red. And how it, it [the fall] busted my chin, and it put a huge gash over my forehead, blood, it was it was very bad actually. And ahm but…, we’ve treating it actually, I do have some medicine for it, but we are watching it very closely.

Jesse: As I listen to your talking about this whole ordeal that you are going through, and how you’ve stood strong sometimes amazingly so, ah, at some point last week, you — you cried. What, what touched you? What made you, breakdown, as it were?

Michael: You mean at court?

Jesse: Yeah.

Michael: I was in pain. I was sitting there hurting. And… the pain was so immense, all I could do was to sit there and cry. See, because it, it was so intense at that moment, ah, ahem, I just couldn’t handle it. So I just grab a tissue and just put it, you know, to my face… and…

Jesse: So, it was more about your personal pain, than the, than the challenges of the, from the stand?

Michael: No, it had nothing to do with what was going on inside. It was totally with personal pain, physical pain.

Jesse: Michael, since so many people are listening, I’m trying to gleam from some of our calls on the phone today and from last week, as people listen to you, what do you want people to know? Those listening to you on the phone — I see calls from Philadelphia, and from Holland and from Britian and New York and Mississippi and Florida, California — what do you want people to know?

Michael: About?

Jesse: About you. About where you are now in the head, how you are feeling?

Michael: Well, ahem, pretty much to — to be strong for me, to pray for my children and my family and myself. This is uh… uh a very difficult time. And to not believe what they hear, and see and read and just because it’s in print does not make it… just because it’s in print does not make it the gospel. And uh… you know, because they have sensationalized this thing to an immense degree. It’s a feeding frenzy — it’s because of uh, my celebrity. The bigger the celebrity, the bigger the target. And they have to remember that. So they’ve turned this into money — it’s like who gets the biggest ratings, you know, it’s terrible what’s happened with it. But it’s part of what I have to suffer as a celebrity. It’s part — part of what I have to go through. And to just uh, just know in the end that I will be vindicated, I pray, because I know the truth. I’m an innocent person. And I believe in God and love God. And just continue to pray for us.

Jesse: You know that, given your faith, in God and in yourself, and your declaration of innocence and while you are going through this storm ahem, presuming that you ah — win this, this has been a close battle, ahhh, a very intense battle, because the battle is — is not over, ah, the, appearance, given your relationship ahh, has called for lots of consternation. Is there anything that you will do differently? When this season is over?

Michael: Is there anything that I would do differently?

Jesse: Differently? When this season is over?

Michael: [Clears throat] Ahem, my level of trust will change. And ah, there, there there’s a lot of conspiracy going on. I’ll say that much. A lot of it.

Jesse: Do you think that…

Michael: All around me.

Jesse: Is the conspiracy connected to the celebrity or to the trial or to the catalog — what do you think the source of it is?

Michael: I, I can’t comment. I can’t comment Jessie, I, I don’t wanna… it ah, I’m under a gag order and it’s a very serious thing. I don’t want to say the wrong thing. With the wrong flavor. It’s a very delicate area. Very delicate where we are now.

Jesse: Good. Good. Let me ask you this question though, that for those who are praying fervently, and who in some way want to help and look forward to seeing Michael Jackson again. What can people expect next from you?

Michael: Well, like,… like I always say, I’m,… I’m a person of the arts. I love the arts very, very, very much. And ah, I’m a musician, I’m a director, I’m a writer, I’m a composer, I’m a producer, and I love the medium. I love film very, very much. I think it’s the most expressive of all of the art mediums. The sculptor can sculpt, the painter can paint, but they capture a moment, ah, they freeze time with the moment. In film, you live the moment. You live, you have the, audiences for two hours. You have their brain, their mind — you can take them any place you want to take them. You know, and that idea is mesmerizing to me — that you can have the power to do… to move people to change their lives and that’s where you marry the music [and the] individual together. And that’s what excites me so much about film and the future. Because I love motion pictures very, very much.

Jesse: Given, ah, the heat that is on you and the taxing issue that you are facing now, does it deter you from pursuing your career when this is over?

Michael: No! No. Not at all. Because ahem, I know who I am [clears throat] inside and outside and I know what I want to do. And I will always, you know, go with my dreams and my ideals in life. And I’m a very courageous person, and I believe in perseverance, determination, and, you know, and all those wonderful things, and those ideals are very important for a person who is goal-orientated, you know?

Jesse: Since people have… have risen so high and so far with your dreams, what are, what are you dreaming of now?

Michael: Oh, ahem [clears throat], like I was saying before, ahem, it’s to innovate, and to pioneer the medium of film, and there’s other things I want to do, which are some surprises. Ah, things in society that I want to do in the future. You know, in Africa. I have some great plans, ah, that I’ve been preparing to do there. I’d had several meetings with people whose flown out to see me since I’ve been going through what I’ve been going through and so my heart is set on doing some things there, very much so as well.

Jesse: You ah, your next project. Because often when people at a stage like this is kind of frozen, but you’re thinking about the next project. What do you see as the next immediate project? What’s hitting you right now?

Michael: Probably, ahemmm… the tsunami song that we want to do to raise money for tsunami, because Africa was ummm, was it Madagascar? One of those countries…

Jesse: Indeed. Madagascar…

Michael: Somalia and Madagascar was hit very hard, and they never…talk about that, the way they talk about the other countries. Now, we have, I mean, uh, my heart is going out for everybody, but at least, when they distribute the truth, distribute it right and ahem, it — they never talk about the devastation down in Africa, so we… I wanna do something for that. And of course, I’ve been working on doing, planning a resort that I’m building down in Africa. Ah, beautiful hotels, ah, just a beautiful setting for people and families and something beautiful down there. They habe a lot of beautiful places down there. So I want to do something that is more international. You know?

Jesse: Well, you know, it’s interesting about the tsunami with this huge national — natural disaster uh, couldn’t be stopped, maybe if we had early detection devices, we could have saved some lives perhaps, but it was a natural disaster, but what you raised is that while that we’ve lost 200 000 lives in the tsunami, we’ve lost 2 million in the Sudan and that’s a manmade disaster and oil and materials all caught up in that stuff, and then 4 million in the Congo. And ah, and I think as we talk about it, you know you and I talk almost everyday, you are reaching out to these African crisis – appears to have…, taken up a large part of your dream at this stage in your life.

Michael: Yes it has. Because Jessie, in my heart, deepest of heart, I really love Africa and I love the people of Africa. That’s why, whenever I get the chance, the children and I, we jump on the plane and we fly to Africa and we vacation there. I spend more of my vacation in Africa than in any other country. And ah, we love the people and we love the environment. Topographically it’s one of the most beautiful places on the surface of the Earth. They never show the sandy white sugar beaches, and it’s there! And they never show the beautiful, you know the landscaping, never show the buildings, the metropolis and urban — Johannesburg, Cape Town, Kenya, you know the Ivory Coast, you know, Rwanda, how beautiful the place is! And it’s really stunningly beautiful! And I want to heighten that awareness with what I’m doing and it’s been my dream for many, many years. And everybody around me knows that, because I go there very much.

Jesse: You know, we knew about the high points of Rome, because we see it on film.

Michael: That’s right.

Jesse: We know about the high points of Britain and the palace, we see it on film. On Paris, we don’t see much of Africa on film. We see Africa as misery and Africa as problems. We do not see it as being this phenomenally endowed continent of sand and sea and…

Michael: Because the…

Jesse: … oil and resources…

Michael: Because, yeah. The world is jealous of Africa for many centuries because it’s natural resources is phenomenal. It really is. And it is the dawn of civilization. Our history, a lot of our bible history is right there in Africa. And King Tut, all those great civilizations — that is right there in Africa. Egypt is in Africa!!! And they always try to separate the two, but Egypt is Africa!!!

Jesse: Well, it’s certainly true that when Jesus was threatened, ah, with death, when Harod sent out the edict for [the] genocide of all of the first born babies, that Joseph took him to Egypt, to Africa, kept him there for 12 years.

Michael: That’s right. That’s right.

Jesse: You’ve shown an amazing level of depth and commitment. Let me say this and in closing Michael, because people are listening and the reason I didn’t want to open up the lines today is because you have, you’re sharing stuff with us that you never quite really hear, but as people go and watch the trial next week and the coming days, what do you want your fans… we have callers on here right now from London, Holland and all around America, so people out there are listening today to you. What do you want to say to your fans and even to your detractors today?

Michael: I just wanna say: Fans in every corner of the Earth, every nationality, every race, every language, I love you from the bottom of my heart. You know, thank you for your love and support and understanding during this trying time. I would love your prayers, and your goodwill. Ah, and ah, please be patient and be with me and believe in me because I am completely, completely innocent. But please know a lot of conspiracy is going on at this time as we speak.

Jesse: Well, it’s Easter time, ah, we fall down, we get back up again. The good news is that, ahem, nothing is too hard for God. And those who believe, fervently believe, no matter how far down that they reach for a rope and not a shovel. They’d be pulled up and they will rise again. Michael, thank you for sharing yourself with the nation today, and the world and for getting up so early in California…

Michael: God bless you.

Jesse: God bless you and keep hope alive. Talk to you a minute off the air, okay?

Michael: Bye-bye.

Jesse: Alright.

At Large With Geraldo Rivera Interview

On Fox News, Geraldo Rivera conducted an intimate and revealing interview
with Michael Jackson. Here we see a glimpse of the real man, the father,
the warrior and the tender heart behind the media’s often very
inaccurate portrayal.

Geraldo Rivera: How you doing,
man?
Michael Jackson: How you doing?
GR: Good to see you.
GR: You get to smile anymore?
MJ: Of course, I smile a lot.
GR: You smile when you’re in a recording studio like this one, doing
music?…
MJ: Of course, I love music.
GR: Is it nice to get back to the music? …
MJ: It’s fantastic. Because ahhh… It’s my
life. That’s what I do.
GR: You’ve been so distracted, you know,
you want to talk about how you’re feeling?
MJ: I’m doing fine
Geraldo, how are you?
GR: Despite whatever else goes on in the
world, you’re doing ok?
MJ: I’m doing very well, thank you.
GR: You know, it was wonderful, seeing you with the children. That I think,
is the real Michael Jackson that has not been seen… you with your own
children, one in diapers the other two toddlers… I don’t know how you
manage without a nanny.
MJ: Well, I enjoy taking care of my
children myself it’s… it’s fun that’s why I had them so I could take
care of them and it’s just great relief for me you know it’s a pleasure
it keeps me happy and laughing and you know, they’re wonderful sweet
innocent children.

GR: I saw you as kind of the arbitrator
between the Nickelodeon and the Disney channel there. You got some
really difficult problems to solve there. But you have such a- a kind of
a normal life there. It’s sweet to see.
MJ: Thank you. They
bring me that.

GR: Tell me, tell me what the children mean to
you, your own children.
MJ: They mean, it’s hard to put it into
words because they mean everything. The way you would explain how your
children make you feel… They’re the world for me, I wake up and I’m
ready for the day because of them. I get them breakfast, I change
diapers, if they want to read, we do a lot of reading, we play hide and
seek, we play blind fold and have a wonderful time with it.

GR: And you can create a world that at least begins to seem normal? They
don’t know any other world obviously.
MJ: I do my best for sure.
GR: So, that is obviously a priority to you
MJ: Yes of course. I
want to be the best father in the world of course.

GR: Do they know who you are? Or what you mean to people?
MJ: Yes, they do.
They’ve been on tours with me and in limousines among a sea of fans.

GR:
Do they like it?
MJ: They find it exciting. They want to get on stage. They bug me to go on stage with me. So, pretty sure I ‘m going to
take them on with me and let the world see them for the first time.

GR:
They don’t say, ‘Daddy I want to go home and watch Nickelodeon?’
MJ:
(Laughs) Probably, probably.
GR: They do that too.
MJ:
Yes.
GR: So how do you feel being here again, being in a
recording studio again, focussing on the music again? Is it a relief, in
a sense?
MJ: It’s a great relief. It makes me feel like I’m
totally at home. I’m into my own. Which is what I’m here for. Any of the
arts… like that could be film, you know, music, any type of art, I love
it.

GR: So, when you’re being the quote on quote, King of Pop,
that’s when you’re the most comfortable? Or is it the creative process?
MJ:
The creative process, yes. I’m obsessed with creating…
GR: I saw
you and Randy, the way you guys react – it’s very reminiscent of the
way my brothers and I are together. Who’s top dog?
MJ: Randy.
GR:
That’s not what I saw
GR: But, uh, you trust your family.
MJ:
Of course, you have to.
GR: Is it a ‘blood thicker than water’
thing? What is it?
MJ: Family is everything. It’s love. It’s what
we were taught. We’re friends at the end of the day, which is
important. Other than what the public or press people say, we’re
friends. We love each other very much.

GR: So, is the family
closely knit, despite all the tabloid stuff?
MJ: That’s
sensationalism.

GR: How do you deal with that?
MJ: How do I
deal with sensationalism?

GR: Yeah. How do you deal with
everything in your life being magnified, exaggerated, almost to a
grotesque level.
MJ: It’s like looking at a fictitious movie.
Because its fiction. It’s like watching science fiction. It’s not true.
And I know myself and it’s sad when people have to read those things and
they believe it.

GR: Do you feel like holding a press conference
every week and saying, this is the rumor du jour, it’s not true
MJ:
I know eventually, the truth will prevail and I’m about truth.

GR:
I’ve researched it and I can’t find anyone who has been more
frivolously sued than you for the most outrageous reasons. One of your
attorneys told me that a woman called Billie Jean Jackson called and
said, ‘Stop accepting any paychecks, Mr. Attorney, I’m the wife – Billie
Jean…’ obviously from your hit song, I mean, how do you… First of all,
how does it affect you?
MJ: Does it affect me? Yes, but I’ve
become immune in a way too, I have rhinoceros skin but at the same time
I’m human. So, anything can hurt like that, but I’m very strong. And, I
just don’t like people hearing about such false information.

GR:
For instance, did you father quadruplets last year?
MJ: That was a
crazy rumor.

GR: Then they became twins. I don’t know what
happened to the other two, maybe they were abducted by aliens.
MJ:
I heard about that story and I don’t have any twins. They said I’m
hiding them or something? Another made up rumor.

GR: So it’s
completely false.
MJ: The bigger the star, the bigger the target.
I’m not trying to say I’m the super-duper star, I’m not saying that.
I’m saying the fact that people come at celebrities, we’re targets. But
truth always prevails. I believe in that. I believe in God, you know?

GR:
Does that faith sustain you?
MJ: Of course, it does.
GR:
How about friendship?
MJ: What about friendship?
GR: Do
you rely on friends? Have people stayed with you through thick and thin?
Who are your best friends?
MJ: My children, my family, my
brothers and my sisters and yeah, most people have. Most people have.

GR:
Do you want to mention the names of the true blue?
MJ: The
faithful, you wouldn’t know them so, it’s uh…

GR: Elizabeth
Taylor?
MJ: Oh, she’s very loyal, I see Elizabeth Taylor all the
time. She’s my dear friend, I was just at her house. We have wonderful
talks on the phone at night, several times a week sometimes…

GR:
So how long have you two been friends?
MJ: I’ve known Elizabeth
closely since I was 16…

GR: And you’ve been making music since
you’re five
MJ: Yes
GR: So you’re in your fifth decade of
making music. That’s forty-one years of making music.
MJ: Yes.
GR:
You ever get sick of it?
MJ: No, no, not at all I never get
enough of it (music).

GR: Really.
GR: Do you ever get sick
of Randy?
(Laughing)
GR: He’s here, ladies and gentlemen.
MJ:
Never, never, never He’s (Randy) wonderful. He’s been amazing,
supportive, and amazingly brilliant.

GR: So, they’re all
different. Your whole family is crazy, exocentric… like my family.
MJ:
Every brother, sister is completely different, like any family, you
have all the different elements… that’s what makes it a family.

GR:
When you have such intense scrutiny, how do you live any kind of a
normal life? How do you have any kind of fun outside of your own
property?
MJ: I don’t. I go off property sometimes, but not all
the time. I create my world behind the gates you know because I can’t go
to the local movie theater down the street or the local park down the
street or go pickup ice cream at the market, at the corner store. So,
you want to create that world behind the gates and that’s what I try and
do. And it’s not just for me if I could share with my family, friends,
or whoever I do.

GR: And that necessity for some privacy, drives
all these crazy rumors and speculations. A difficult balancing act that
you have to endure.
GR: But you’re not complaining are you? I
don’t. I try to rub it off. I don’t know what I’m the king of… the king
of getting shot at maybe. Ha ha ha ha.
MJ: “The king of
journalism.”

GR: So, what is it about children in distress? You
mentioned the Tsunami relief effort. What is it? Is it your own
fatherhood that motivates that?
MJ: Caring. And reading the
Bible, learning about God, Jesus, Love. He said, ‘bring on the
children’, ‘imitate the children’, ‘be like the children’ and ‘take care
of others.’ Take care of old people. And we were raised with those
values. Those are very important values and my family and I we were
raised with those values and they continue strong in us today.

GR:
What about movies for yourself again? You had The Wiz and some of the
others but we haven’t seen you on the big screen in a while.
MJ:
I’ll be directing myself. I love directing. I love creativity and I
think when an artist steps forward with a production of some type, if he
can express himself the way he sees it should be done. I feel it and I
see it. I’m a visionary. If I can give that, I do and that’s what I love
to do with music and dance and the arts.

GR: And do you think
art has a role in real life? Specifically referring to this record and
Tsunami relief?
MJ: I saw it the day after Christmas and as the
numbers kept escalating, it just became phenomenal and not even I could
believe that it was true. I was amazed. I said, I thought I should do
something. That’s what God gave us talent for. To give and to help
people and to give back. So, my brothers and I decided to put a song
together…

GR: What did you pick up the phone and say, “hey bros?”
What did you say?
MJ: We just say, hey, we want to do something
in the studio for the Tsunami victims. Let’s get together and organize
it. And they just said great.

GR: However, you’re back, I think
that people will appreciate the fact that you’re back. Wouldn’t you kind
of exalt in a world where you could concentrate on your art and your
kids?

MJ: I would love it. I mean that’s what drives me. The
medium. The art. That’s the world I’m most comfortable in.”

GR:
In Gary, Indiana, did you ever expect where your world would be as a 46
year old man?
MJ: I never thought about it. I knew I wanted to do
something wonderful all of my life and to help people and I never
clearly really thought about it when I was really little. I just sang
and danced and didn’t understand whey people were applauding and
clapping and screaming. You really don’t. You don’t know why…

GR:
When you grow up like that on stage, when do you get it? When do you
understand where you fit in to society?
MJ: It takes longer when
you get older. You get a more rounded personality and your brain starts
to grow. You start reasoning and understanding more things, researching.

.
GR:
Isn’t it nice to have a conversation on television where people can
just hear you being ordinary, normal, reasonable.
MJ: I’m like
this all the time. I’m just being myself.

GR: At a certain point,
Michael Jackson and the brothers Jackson kind of separated
artistically, is this a moment in your life where you’re coming back
together? Obviously you’ll continue your solo career, but what’s the big
plan, what’s the big picture at this stage in your life? What has been
left unachieved? What would you like to do?
MJ: There are a lot
of surprises. Film. I love film. It’s innovating, taking the medium to a
new place. I used the music video medium as a short film medium to take
me to the next level. I’m having a lot of fun.

GR: Do you ever
look back and contemplate, oh my goodness, Thriller is the biggest
selling musical performance ever, do you ever get your arms around that?
MJ: I try not to think about it too hard because I don’t want my
subconscious mind to think I’ve done it all, you’re done now. That’s why
I don’t put awards or trophies in my house. You won’t find a gold
record anywhere in my house. Because it makes you feel you’ve
accomplished. Look what I’ve done. But I always want to feel, no I
haven’t done it yet.

GR: ‘The King of Pop’ and now I look at some
of these performers- there’s a new one – there’s 50 cent and another
one- I forget his name, but they’re well-known because they survived
violent attacks where they almost died and they’re into hip hop kind of –
it’s a different era in popular music- do you think you’ll be more like
them- more urban kind of- or will the world come back to more pop and
traditional rock?
MJ: Great music & great melodies are immortal. Culture changes, fashion change, customs, great music is immortal. We still listen to Mozart today, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, any of them, any of the greats. Great music is like a great piece of sculpture, a great painting. It’s forever. That’s a fact.
GR: On the other hand, I interviewed Barbara Streisand at one pivotal point in
her career, she was going to do duets with the BeeGees and other popular
artists- she kind of changed the tempo to surprise people.
MJ: I’ve done a lot of it already… I don’t really rap, but I could… I’ve
written songs with rap versus in them for very famous rappers, but
they’re much better at it than I am.

GR: Don’t you appreciate,
despite your isolated life and despite the fact you’ve been a star so
long, you still have what appears to be a very passionate and profound
relationship with the community. Does that support you? Does that
sustain you? Do you agree with me?
MJ: Yes, I do agree, because
it’s important to love your neighbors…

GR: But were does it come
from… where does that almost instinctive love of you come from?
MJ: I truly think it comes from my mother and God (instinctive love) The
way we were raised. The values my father instilled in us in youth. She
was always with the Bible teaching us – we’d go to service all the time.
Four times a week and I’m so glad we did that because those are values
that are very important. I don’t know if I could have done as well
without them.

GR: Do you still spend time with mom and dad?
They’re not far from here right now? And what is that relationship all
about? I’m so close to my mom, obviously.
MJ: It’s wonderful. At this stage, you tend to appreciate more who your parents are more and what they’ve done for you. You start to retrack where you are in your life and all the wonderful things they’ve instilled in you. You start to see them come forth. I’m starting to see a lot of things. Traits that
my father influenced me on and my mother.

GR: My friend Cheech,
who you know, whose partner Tommy Chong helped discover you guys, ‘Bobby
Taylor and The Vancouvers’, he says that as he gets older, he looks at
his father’s face in the mirror. Do you feel that? Are you becoming like
your dad?
MJ: I’m very much like my father in a lot of ways.
He’s very strong. He’s a warrior. He’s always taught us to be courageous
and to be confident and to believe in our ideals. And no matter what,
no star is too far to reach and you never give up. And our mother taught
us that as well.

GR: So you’re a warrior also?
MJ:
Absolutely.

GR: That’s the way you see yourself?
GR: Tell
us more about the way you see yourself?

MJ: I try to be kind and generous and to give to people and to do what I think God wants me to do. Sometimes I pray and say “where do you want me to go next, God?
What do you want me to do from here?” I’ve always been very spiritual in
that way. It’s nothing new.

GR: Did you ever see the movie
“Finding Neverland” or read about J. M. Barrie, the man who wrote “Peter
Pan.”
MJ: I know a lot about Mr. Barrie and I’ve been a fan for
many, many, many years.

GR: You know, he had a rocky road,
similar to you, I don’t want to get too far into it. Tell us what led to
the creation of Neverland. I mean, specifically the place – There are 2
Neverlands, there’s 3. There’s Peter Pan’s Neverland, there’s the
Neverland in Michael Jackson’s mind and then there’s the physical place
you created up there where I visited you when you brought up all the
inner-city children. Why did you create that place?
MJ: I created
Neverland as a home for myself and my children and it was created
simply, it was almost like it was done subconsciously, like I said
earlier, where can I go? I mean, it’s hard. I’ve tried to go out as
myself and I’ve had policemen tell me, “put on a disguise! And give me
an autograph for my wife!” They tell me, “why are you out here with no
security?” I can’t do it. I do it sometimes, but it’s very difficult.

GR:
But you owned Neverland before you had the kids, was it for you? The
exotic animals, were they for Michael Jackson?
MJ: For me and
sharing with others. It gave me a chance to do what I couldn’t do when I
was little. We couldn’t go to movie theaters. We couldn’t go to
Disneyland. We couldn’t do all those fun things. We were on tour. We
were working hard. And we did enjoy it. But this allowed me to have a
place behind the gates where the entire world I love is there.

GR:
You create, like Barrie, this imaginative world, do you ever outgrow
something like that Michael? Do you ever think this is silly to have the
llamas and the choo-choo trains and the rides?
MJ: It’s calling
God silly if you do that, because God made all things great and small.
Other men have their Ferraris and their airplanes or helicopters or
wherever they find their bliss. My bliss is in giving and sharing and
having simple innocent fun.

GR: Your homes. For all the grandeur
of Neverland. Your home is quite modest. And your personal style. I
don’t see any bling for instance. How come you don’t have the big
diamond thing that says Michael?
MJ: I’m modest in that way. If I
had it on, I would probably give it away to the first kid to say, ‘wow,
I like your necklace.’ When I was growing up, stars like Sammy Davis,
Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly… if I admired something they were wearing, If I
simply said, ‘I love that shirt you’re wearing,’ they would give it to
me. It’s a show business trait. Hand it over.

GR: Despite the
glare of the media attention and even the day that I was there and you
invited the inner-city kids there, what’s it like to have the kids
there? Why do you do that? I wanted to ask you that question that day
but I pose it to you know.
MJ: I’ve traveled the world over 8
times. I do as many hospitals and orphanages as I do concerts. But, of
course, it’s not covered (by the press). That’s not why I do it, for
coverage. I do it because it’s from my heart. And there are so many
children in the city who haven’t seen the mountains, who haven’t been on
a carousel, who haven’t pet a horse or a llama, never seen them, so if I
can open my gates and see that bliss, an explosion of screaming
laughter from the children and they run on the rides, I say “Thank you,
God.” I feel I’ve won God’s smile of approval, because I’m doing
something that brings joy and happiness to other people.

GR: So,
you’re close to your siblings? How does it affect you when they get
involved – like Janet’s superbowl flap? Just tell me how you responded
as a brother and a viewer?
MJ: Oh, I can’t speak for my sister.
With love. Actually, I was looking right at it and I didn’t see it. I
was at a friend of mine’s house, Ron Burkle and in a movie theater, it
was huge on the screen and I didn’t even see it. I heard all this
controversy the next day and I said, “That’s not true.” I didn’t even
see it.

GR: Do you think the controversy was overblown? Do you
think it’s a Jackson related phenomena or is it a testament to our times
socially in this country?
MJ: That’s an interesting hypothesis
too. It’s both. It’s hard to answer. I’d rather not answer that one.

GR:
Did you call her and say ‘don’t sweat the small stuff?’
MJ:
Something like that. ‘Be strong. This too shall pass.’ ‘Don’t worry
about it.’ I’ve seen worse things. I said, “Janet, you’re too young to
remember but, I once watched the Oscars with David Niven on it and a
naked man came running out, streaking. Now, he didn’t get there on his
own. That was organized and nobody – they didn’t say much about that.”
I’ll just say that much. That was live, around the world. The next day
it was a joke.

GR: I think there is a Jackson component. I think
the thing was exaggerated. I think the Jackson thing was part of the
reason.
MJ: Thank you.
GR: So as you go forward in this
record, what are we going to expect? Are we going to hear this on the
radio and then people are going to send in their money and it’s going to
go to these kids in the Indian Ocean region?
MJ: I would like
that very much.

GR: Now tell me, how that act of largesse, that
compassion, will make you feel? Sometimes, I think, I feel better giving
than receiving in my life, explain the mechanics of that in your own
life.
MJ: It’s just the idea. I don’t know if its the psychology
of it or what. I just love working hard on something. Putting it
together. Sweating over it and then sharing it with people and then
having them love it and I always pray that they like it. That’s what
gives me great satisfaction as an artist.

GR: Does it frustrate
you professionally or personally when people say that this Jackson
project flopped or that happened. Your ‘Number Ones’ compilation for
instance, 7 and a half million copies sold. Now I think that’s quadruple
platinum or whatever it is you label it. And yet the characterization
by some in the music business at least is that you’re not- you know,
that it wasn’t a hit.
MJ: I don’t know which project you’re
talking about… because of negative news. Sensationalism seems to sell
more than wonderful, positive news. People would rather hear gossip. My
last 8 albums have all entered the charts at number 1, so people like to
sensationalize things and make up stories and rumors and sometimes…

GR:
Does it hurt your feelings? Do you want to scream out and say, “Hey
wait a minute, check the numbers!”
MJ: It’s a commonality in
mankind that I don’t like. That part of it, but then there’s a beautiful
side to mankind too, isn’t there?

GR: But not to Eminem. We’ve
spoken about it. I think that you should. Why not?
MJ: And what’s
your question?

GR: Stevie Wonder said that he was piling on and
how really rude it was for someone who made his money from the community
to ‘diss the community in a sense in a r@#%$ and, I’ve said it, very
bold faced, bigoted presentation. Tell us how that hurt you and how
you’re feeling about it now.
MJ: I’ve never met Mr. Eminem, and
I’ve always admired him and to have him do something like that was
pretty painful as an artist to another artist and it’s sad because I
think what Stevie Wonder said is true, I just don’t want to say too much
more than that. He (Eminem) should be ashamed of himself what he’s
doing. Stevie said he’s bulls. He used the word. That’s what he said. I’m not saying it, Stevie said it. Stevie’s amazing. He’s one of the sweetest men in the world. GR: Stevie did and he is bulls.

So,
when Stevie said that, did you feel a tremendous sense of reassurance,
of brotherly love, there?
MJ: I love Stevie Wonder. To me, he’s a
musical prophet. I’ll always love him. A lot of people respect Stevie
and he’s a very strong entity in this medium, in this business and when
he speaks, people listen and it was wrong of Eminem to do what he did.
I’ve been an artist most of my life and I’ve never attacked a fellow
artist. great artists don’t do that. You don’t have to do that.

GR:
I mentioned Janet’s fiasco and the exaggerated response to it. Once
again do you think he only did it because he knew he could get away with
it because you’re Michael Jackson?
MJ: Yeah, but it doesn’t
hurt. It’s silly. It’s kind of elementary. I hope he’s having fun…

GR:
Like a poo-poo joke. It still hurts your feelings and you don’t want
your kids to see it.
MJ: Oh god, I would hate it if they saw it. I
would hate that”

GR: Finally, we’ve studiously avoided the case
and not talked at all about the case that’s pending. You’re under this
gag order. I know that you have received permission from the judge to
read a statement. I hate to end an interview that way, but if you’d like
to read that statement now, I think it’s important.
MJ: IN THE
LAST TWO WEEKS, A LARGE AMOUNT OF UGLY, MALICIOUS INFORMATION HAS BEEN
RELEASED INTO THE MEDIA ABOUT ME. APPARENTLY, THIS INFORMATION WAS
LEAKED THROUGH TRANSCRIPTS IN A GRAND JURY PROCEEDING WHERE NEITHER MY
LAWYERS NOR I EVER APPEARED. THE INFORMATION IS DISGUSTING AND FALSE.
YEARS
AGO, I ALLOWED A FAMILY TO VISIT AND SPEND TIME AT NEVERLAND. NEVERLAND
IS MY HOME. I ALLOWED THIS FAMILY INTO MY HOME BECAUSE THEY TOLD ME
THEIR SON WAS ILL WITH CANCER AND NEEDED MY HELP.
THROUGH THE
YEARS, I HAVE HELPED THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN WHO WERE ILL OR IN DISTRESS.
THESE
EVENTS HAVE CAUSED A NIGHTMARE FOR MY FAMILY, MY CHILDREN AND ME. I
NEVER INTEND TO PLACE MYSELF IN SO VULNERABLE A POSITION AGAIN.
I
LOVE MY COMMUNITY AND I HAVE GREAT FAITH IN OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM. PLEASE
KEEP AN OPEN MIND AND LET ME HAVE MY DAY IN COURT. I DESERVE A FAIR
TRIAL LIKE EVERY OTHER AMERICAN CITIZEN. I WILL BE ACQUITTED AND
VINDICATED WHEN THE TRUTH IS TOLD.
GR: Michael is there anything
else you would like to say?
MJ: Yes. I would just like for the
public to keep my family and myself in their prayers. That would be very
nice. Thank you, Geraldo.

September 25, 2007 : Ebony interview

September 25, 2007 : Michael (with Blanket by his side) gives an interview to Harriete Cole for his upcoming Ebony coverstory at the Four Seasons Hotel in NYC.

Sitting on the sofa next to Michael Jackson, you quickly look past the enigmatic icon´s light, almost translucent skin and realize that this African-American legend is more than just skin deep. More than an entertainer, more than a singer or dancer, the grown-up father of three reveals a confident, controlled and mature man who has a lot of creativity left inside him.
Michael Joseph Jackson rocked the music world in December 1982, when he exploded on the pop scene with Thriller, the rich, rhythmic, infectious album that introduced many Whites to a talent that most Blacks had known for decades, and shattered nearly every industry record on the planet. The historic project was yet another, albeit giant, step in a musical career that began 18 years earlier, at age 6, with his brothers in the Jackson 5.
In his first U.S. magazine interview in a decade and on the 25th anniversary of Thriller, Jackson sat down with Ebony magazine for a rare, intimate and exclusive conversation about the creation of Thriller, the historic Motown 25 performance, being a father, the state of the music industry and the force behind his creativity.

Here is Michael Jackson, in his own words…

Q: How did it all start?

A: Motown was preparing to do this movie called The Wiz… and Quincy Jones happened to be the man who was doing the music. Now, I had heard of Quincy before. When I was in Indiana as a child, my father used to buy jazz albums, so I knew him as a jazz musician.
So after we had made this movie—we had gotten pretty close on the film, too; he helped me understand certain words, he was really father-like—I called him after the movie, out of complete sincerity—´cause I´m a shy person, ESPECIALLY then, I used to not even look at people when they were talking to me, I´m not joking—and I said, “I´m ready to do an album. Do you think… could you recommend anybody who would be interested in producing it with me or working with me?” He paused and said, “Why don´t you let ME do it?” I said to myself, “I don´t know why I didn´t think of that.” Probably because I was thinking that he was more my father, kind of jazzy. So after he said that, I said, “WOW, that would be great.” What´s great about working with Quincy, he let´s you do your thing. He doesn´t get in the way.

So the first thing I came to him with was from Off the Wall, our first album, and Rod Temperton came in the studio, and he came with this killer—he´s this little German guy from Wurms, Germany—he comes with this … “doop, dakka dakka doop, dakka dakka dakka doop”, this whole melody and chorus, Rock With You. I go, WOW! So when I heard that, I said, “OK, I really have to work now.” So every time Rod would present something, I would present something, and we´d form a little friendly competition. I love working like that. I used to read how Walt Disney used to, if they were working on Bambi or an animated show, they´d put a deer in the middle of the floor and make the animators kind of compete with different styles of drawing. Whoever had the most stylized effect that Walt liked, he would pick that. They would kind of compete, it was like a friendly thing, but it was competition, ´cause it breeds higher effort. So whenever Rod would bring something, I would bring something, then he would bring something, then I would bring something else. We created this wonderful thing.

Q: So, after Off the Wall, in the spring of ´82, you went back in the studio to work on Thriller.

A: After Off the Wall, we had all these No. 1 hits from it — “Don´t Stop ´Til You Get Enough,” “Rock With You,” “She´s Out of My Life,” “Workin´ Day and Night”—and we were nominated for a Grammy award, but I was just not happy with how the whole thing happened because I wanted to do much more, present much more, put more of my soul and heart in it.

Q: Was it a transition point for you?

A: A COMPLETE transition. Ever since I was a little boy, I would study composition. And it was Tchaikovsky that influenced me the most. If you take an album like Nutcracker Suite, every song is a killer, every one. So I said to myself, “Why can´t there be a pop album where every…”—people used to do an album where you´d get one good song, and the rest were like B-sides. They´d call them “album songs”— and I would say to myself, “Why can´t every one be like a hit song? Why can´t every song be so great that people would want to buy it if you could release it as a single?” So I always tried to strive for that. That was my purpose for the next album. That was the whole idea. I wanted to just put any one out that we wanted. I worked hard for it.

Q: So, the creative process, were you deliberate about that, or did it just kind of happen?

A: No, I was pretty deliberate. Even though it all came together some kind of way, consciously, it was created in this universe, but once the right chemistry gets in the room, magic has to happen. It has to. It´s like putting certain elements in one hemisphere and it produces this magic in the other. It´s science. And getting in there with some of the great people, it´s just wonderful.
Quincy calls me a nickname, “Smelly.” Smelly came from —and [Steven] Spielberg calls me that, too. Back then, especially back then — I say a few swear words now—but especially then, you couldn´t get me to swear. So I would say, ´That´s a “smelly” song.´ That would mean, ´It´s so great´ that you´re engrossed in it. So he would call me ´Smelly.´

But yeah, working with Quincy was such a wonderful thing. He lets you experiment, do your thing, and he´s genius enough to stay out of the way of the music, and if there´s an element to be added, he´ll add it. And he hears these little things. Like, for instance, in “Billie Jean,” I had come up with this piece of the bass lick, and the melody, and the whole composition. But in listening, he´ll add a nice riff…
We would work on a track and then we´d meet at his house, play what we worked on, and he would say, ´Smelly, let it talk to you.´ I´d go, ´OK.´ He´d say, ´If the song needs something, it´ll tell you. Let it talk to you.´ I´ve learned to do that. The key to being a wonderful writer is not to write. You just get out of the way. Leave room for God to walk in the room. And when I write something that I know is right, I get on my knees and say thank you. Thank you, Jehovah!

Q: When´s the last time you had that feeling?

A: Well, recently. I´m always writing. When you know it´s right, sometimes you feel like something´s coming, a gestation, almost like a pregnancy or something. You get emotional, and you start to feel something gestating and, magic, there it is! It´s an explosion of something that´s so beautiful, you go, WOW! There it is. That´s how it works through you. It´s a beautiful thing. It´s a universe of where you can go, with those 12 notes…

(He´s now listening to an early, writing version of Billie Jean playing on an iPhone…)

…What I do when I write is that I´ll do a raggedy, rough version just to hear the chorus, just to see how much I like the chorus. If it works for me that way when it´s raggedy, then I know it´ll work… Listen to that, that´s at home. Janet, Randy, me… Janet and I are going “Whoo, Whoo…Whoo, Whoo…” I do that, the same process with every song. It´s the melody, the melody is most important. If the melody can sell me, if I like the rough, then I´ll go to the next step. If it sounds good in my head, it´s usually good when I do it. The idea is to transcribe from what´s in your mentality onto tape.
If you take a song like “Billie Jean,” where the bass line is the prominent, dominant piece, the protagonist of the song, the main driving riff that you hear, getting the character of that riff to be just the way you want it to be, that takes a lot of time. Listen, you´re hearing four basses on there, doing four different personalities, and that´s what gives it the character. But it takes a lot of work.

Q: Another big moment was the Motown 25 performance…

A: I was at the studio editing Beat It, and for some reason I happened to be at Motown Studios doing it—I had long left the company. So they were getting ready to do something with the Motown anniversary, and Berry Gordy came by and asked me did I want to do the show, and I told him ´NO.´ I told him no. I said no because the Thriller thing, I was building and creating something I was planning to do, and he said, ´But it´s the anniversary…´ So this is what I said to him. I said, ´I will do it, but the only way I´ll do it is if you let me do one song that´s not a Motown song.´ He said, ´What is it?´ I said, ´Billie Jean´. He said, ´OK, fine.´ I said, ´You´ll really let me do “Billie Jean?” He said, ´Yeah.´

So I rehearsed and choreographed and dressed my brothers, and picked the songs, and picked the medley. And not only that, you have to work out all the camera angles.

I direct and edit everything I do. Every shot you see is my shot. Let me tell you why I have to do it that way. I have five, no, six cameras. When you´re performing—and I don´t care what kind of performance you are giving—if you don´t capture it properly, the people will never see it. It´s the most selfish medium in the world. You´re filming WHAT you want people to see, WHEN you want them to see it, HOW you want them to see it, what JUXTAPOSITION you want them to see. You´re creating the totality of the whole feeling of what´s being presented, in your angle and your shots. ´Cause I know what I want to see. I know what I want to go to the audience. I know what I want to come back. I know the emotion that I felt when I performed it, and I try to recapture that same emotion when I cut and edit and direct´.

Q: How long have you been creating all of those elements?

A: Since I was a little boy, with my brothers. My father used to say, ´Show ´em Michael, show ´em.´

Q: Did they ever get jealous of that?

A: They never showed it at the time, but it must have been hard, because I would never get spanked during rehearsals or practice. [Laughter] But afterwards was when I got in trouble. [Laughter]. It´s true, that´s when I would get it. My father would rehearse with a belt in his hand. You couldn´t mess up. My father was a genius when it comes to the way he taught us, staging, how to work an audience, anticipating what to do next, or never let the audience know if you are suffering, or if something´s going wrong. He was amazing like that.

Q: Is that where you think you got not just a lot of your business sense, but how to control the whole package?

A: Absolutely. My father, experience; but I learned a lot from my father. He had a group when he was a young person called the Falcons. They came over and they played music, all the time, so we always had music and dancing. It´s that cultural thing that Black people do. You clear out all the furniture, turn up the music…when company comes, everybody gets out in the middle of the floor, you gotta do something. I loved that.

Q: Do your kids do that now?

A: They do, but they get shy. But they do it for me, sometimes.

Q: Speaking of showmanship: MTV, they didn´t play Black folks. How hard was that for you?

A: They said they don´t play [Black artists]. It broke my heart, but at the same time it lit something. I was saying to myself, ´I have to do something where they… I just refuse to be ignored.´ So yeah, “Billie Jean,” they said, ´We won´t play it.´
But when they played it, it set the all-time record. Then they were asking me for EVERYTHING we had. They were knocking our door down. Then Prince came, it opened the door for Prince and all the other Black artists. It was 24-hour heavy metal, just a potpourri of crazy images…
They came to me so many times in the past and said, ´Michael, if it wasn´t for you, there would be no MTV.´ They told me that, over and over, personally. I guess they didn´t hear it at the time…but I´m sure they didn´t mean any pure malice [laughter].

Q: That really gave birth to the modern video age…

A: I used to look at MTV. My brother [Jackie], I´ll never forget, he´d say, ´Michael, you gotta see this channel. Oh, my God, it´s the best idea. They show music 24 hours a day… 24 Hours A Day!´ So I said, ´Let me see this.´ And I´m watching it, I´m seeing all this stuff going on and saying ´If only they could give this stuff some more entertainment value, more story, a little more dance, I´m sure people would love it more.´ So I said, when I do something, it´s gotta have a story—an opening, a middle and a closing—so you could follow a linear thread; there´s got to be a thread through it. So while you are watching the entertainment value of it, you´re wondering what is going to happen. So that´s when I started to experiment with Thriller, The Way You Make Me Feel and Bad and Smooth Criminal and directing and writing.

Q: What do you think about the state of music videos and music today?

A: [The industry], it´s at a crossroads. There´s a transformation going on. People are confused, what´s going to happen, how to distribute and sell music. I think the Internet kind of threw everybody for a real loop. ´Cause it´s so powerful, kids love it so much. The whole world is at their fingertips, on their lap. Anything they want to know, anyone they want to communicate with, any music, any movies… This thing, it just took everybody for a loop. Right now, all these Starbucks deals and Wal-Mart deals, direct to artist, I don´t know if that´s the answer. I think the answer is just phenomenal, great music. Just reaching the masses. I think people are still searching. There´s not a real musical revolution going on right now, either. But when it´s there, people will break a wall down to get to it. I mean, ´cause before Thriller, it was the same kind of thing. People were NOT buying music. It helped to bring everybody back into the stores. So, when it happens, it happens´.

Q: Who impresses you?

A: As far as artistry, I think Ne-Yo is doing wonderful. But he has a very Michael Jackson feel, too. But that´s what I like about him. I can tell that he´s a guy who understands writing.

Q: Do you work with these young artists?

A: Sure. I´ve always been the type where, I don´t care if it´s the mailman or the guy sweeping the floor. If it´s a great song, it´s a great song. Some of the most ingenious ideas come from everyday people, who just go, ´Why don´t you try this, or do this.´ It´ll be a wonderful idea, so you should just try it. Chris Brown is wonderful. Akon, he´s a wonderful artist.
I always want to do music that inspires or influences another generation. You want what you create to live, be it sculpture or painting or music. Like Michelangelo, he said, “I know the creator will go, but his work survives. That is why to escape death, I attempt to bind my soul to my work.” And that´s how I feel. I give my all to my work. I want it to just live.

Q: How does it feel to know you have changed history? Do you think about that a lot?

A: Yeah, I do, I really do. I´m very proud that we opened doors, that it helped tear down a lot. Going around the world, doing tours, in stadiums, you see the influence of the music. When you just look out over the stage, as far as the naked eye could see, you see people. And it´s a wonderful feeling, but it came with a lot of pain, a lot of pain.

Q: How so?

A: When you´re on top of your game, when you´re a pioneer, people come at you. It´s there, who´s at the top, you want to get at them.
But I feel grateful, all those record-breaking things, to the biggest albums, to those No. 1s, I still feel grateful. I´m a guy who used to sit in my living room and listen to my father play Ray Charles. My mother used to wake me up at 3 in the morning, ´Michael, he´s on TV, he´s on TV!´ I´d run to the TV and James Brown would be on TV. I said, ´That´s what I want to do.´

Q: Can we expect more of Michael Jackson?

A: I´m writing a lot of stuff right now. I´m in the studio, like, every day. I think, like, the rap thing that is happening now, when it first came out, I always felt that it was gonna take more of a melodic structure to make it more universal, ´cause not everybody speak English. [Laughter] And you are limited to your country. But when you can have a melody, and everybody can hum a melody, then that´s when it became France, The Middle East, everywhere! All over the world now ´cause they put that melodic, linear thread in there. You have to be able to hum it, from the farmer in Ireland to the lady who scrubs toilets in Harlem to anybody who can whistle to a child poppin´ their fingers. You have to be able to hum it.

Q: So, you´re almost 50 now. Do you think you´ll be doing this at 80?

A: The truth is, umm, no. Not the way James Brown did, or Jackie Wilson did, where they just ran it out, they killed themselves. In my opinion, I wish [Brown] could have slowed down and been more relaxed and enjoyed his hard work.

Q: Will you tour again?

A: I don´t care about long tours. But what I love about touring is that it sharpens ones craft beautifully. That´s what I love about Broadway, that´s why actors turn to Broadway, to sharpen their skills. It does do that. ´Cause it takes years to become a great entertainer. Years. You can´t just grab some guy out of obscurity and throw ´em out there and expect for this person to compete with that person. It´ll never work. And the audience knows it; they can see it. The way they gesture their hand, move their body, the way they do anything with the microphone, or the way they bow. They can see it right away.
Now Stevie Wonder, he´s a musical prophet. He´s another guy I have to credit. I used to say to myself, ´I want to write more.´ I used to watch [producers] Gamble and Huff, and Hal Davis and The Corporation write all those hits for the Jackson 5 and I really wanted to study the anatomy. What they used to do, they used to have us come in and sing after they did the track. I used to get upset ´cause I would want to see them make the track. So they would give me “ABC” after the track was done, or “I Want You Back” or “The Love You Save.” I wanted to experience it all.
So Stevie Wonder used to literally let me sit like a fly on the wall. I got to see Songs in the Key of Life get made, some of the most golden things. I would sit with Marvin Gaye and just…and these would be the people who would just come over to our house and hang out and play basketball with my brothers on the weekend. We always had these people around. So when you really can see the science, the anatomy and the structure of how it all works, it´s just so wonderful.

Q: So, you play on a world stage. How do you see the shape of the world today?

A: I´m very concerned about the plight of the international global warming phenomenon. I knew it was coming, but I wish they would have gotten people´s interest sooner. But it´s never too late. It´s been described as a runaway train; if we don´t stop it, we´ll never get it back. So we have to fix it, now. That´s what I was trying to do with “Earth Song,” “Heal the World,” “We Are the World,” writing those songs to open up people´s consciousness. I wish people would listen to every word.

Q: What do you think about the next presidential race? Hillary, Barack?

A: To tell you the truth, I don´t follow that stuff. We were raised to not…we don´t look to man to fix the problems of the world, we don´t. They can´t do it. That´s how I see it. It´s beyond us. Look, we don´t have control over the grounds, they can shake. We don´t have control over the seas, they can have tsunamis. We don´t have control over the skies, there are storms. We´re all in God´s hands. I think that man has to take that into consideration. I just wish they would do more for the babies and children, help them more. That would be great, wouldn´t it?

Q: Speaking of babies, as a father now, rewind back 25 years ago. What is the difference between that Michael and the Michael today?

A: That Michael is probably the same Michael here. I just wanted to get certain things accomplished first. But I always had this tug in the back of my head, the things I wanted to do, to raise children, have children. I´m enjoying it very much.

Q: What do you think about all the stuff that´s out there about you, all the things you read? How do you feel about that?

A: I don´t pay attention to that. In my opinion, it´s ignorance. It´s usually not based on fact. It´s based on, you know, myth. The guy who you don´t get to see. Every neighborhood has the guy who you don´t see, so you gossip about him. You see those stories about him, there´s the myth that he did this or he did that. People are crazy!

I´m just about wanting to do wonderful music.

But back to Motown 25, one of the things that touched me the most about doing that was, after I did the performance—I´ll never forget. There was Marvin Gaye in the wings, and the Temptations and Smokey Robinson and my brothers, they were hugging me and kissing me and holding me. Richard Pryor walked over to me and said [in a quiet voice], ´Now that was the greatest performance I´ve ever seen.´ That was my reward. These were people who, when I was a little boy in Indiana, I used to listen to Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and to have them bestow that kind of appreciation on me, I was just honored. Then the next day, Fred Astaire calls and said, ´I watched it last night, and I taped it, and I watched it again this morning. You´re a helluva mover. You put the audience on their ASS last night!´ So, later, when I saw Fred Astaire, he did this with his fingers [He makes a little moonwalk gesture with his two fingers on his outstretched palm].

I remember doing the performance so clearly, and I remembered that I was so upset with myself, ´cause it wasn´t what I wanted. I wanted it to be more. But not until I finished. It was a little child, a little Jewish child backstage with a little tuxedo on, he looked at me, and he said [in a stunned voice] ´Who taught you to move like that?´ [Laughter] And I said, ´I guess God… and rehearsal.´

Behind the scenes at Michael Jackson/Ebony Magazine cover shoot

Meanwhile, more than 200 readers from around the world have already written in over the past few days with questions about the shoot, the interview and the star. Here are a few of those questions, along with comments from the Ebony team — vice president and editorial director Bryan Monroe, creative director Cole and senior editor Joy Bennett — who were with him over those three days…

Q: Will Michael Jackson do another world tour? — Dusty in Dublin, Ireland

A. (Bryan Monroe) | Michael didn’t say specifically when or if he would tour, but was hesitant about taking on another global concert series. ” I don’t care about long tours,” he told us in the interview. He doesn’t want to grow old doing concert after concert, flying from one mega-stadium to the next. “Not the way James Brown did and or Jackie Wilson did,” he said in the article. “They just kept going, running, killing themselves. In my opinion, I wish [Brown] could have slowed down and relaxed and enjoyed his hard work.”

Q: Can he still dance as amazingly as he did before? — Gabriella in England

A. (Bryan Monroe) | For a man nearly 50, he was still incredibly limber. He showed of a few of his classic moves during the photo shoot – the leg twist/kick move in particular. Yes, he’s still got it.

Q: When is a new CD coming out? — K. Hall in Alabama

A. (Joy Bennett) | Not sure. Michael told us repeatedly that he was writing every day and recording in the studio. He also says that he thinks he’s got more blockbuster hits coming out (see the story for more on his writing process). Neither he nor his staff will confirm a date but we’ll be on the lookout for an early 2008 new release.

Q: Is he very shy in person? — Stacie in New York

A. (Joy Bennett) | No, surprisingly he was not very shy. He wasn’t shrouded, masked or gloved and he answered questions directly, and at great length.

Q: There has been talk about his skin color. Is he the whitest person to be on the cover of Ebony? — Mae in Southeast Asia

A. (Joy Bennett) | Not at all, the actor Carroll O’Connor was on Ebony’s cover as his character, Archie Bunker in June 1972. But make no mistake, despite his unusually light skin, he has said it is due to a skin condition called vitiligo, Michael is still 100 percent African American.

Q: I think America still has yet to grasp the influence and position Michael has internationally. You can ask a woman who grew up in a small community in Norway, and a woman who grew up in Africa, and they will know his name, and his music. I have some questions: Who decided on the clothing? Was it picked by the stylist, and approved by Michael Jackson beforehand? Why this particular museum? Was the location picked by Michael Jackson? — Annette in Norway

A: (Harriette Cole) | Michael wanted to be photographed in an artistic setting and the Brooklyn Museum gladly accommodated us all. We shot in the midst of ancient and contemporary history, and it was powerful to be in that space. Regarding the wardrobe, we worked with celebrity fashion stylist Phillip Bloch to develop concepts for wardrobe and then he and his team went shopping. We really wanted him to look elegant and timeless on the cover. We found a number of looks that would achieve that and presented them to Michael. He ultimately chose what he would be happy to wear–which turned out to be far more outfits than we had time to shoot! Michael Jackson was the perfect fit for everything we put on him. It was a lot of fun to work with someone who looks great in clothes, who knows how to move his body and who understands the camera. It was magic!

Q: Did most of the people who worked with Michael, during the interview or photo shoot feel intimated by him? How did he interact with the crew? — Samantha and Michele

A: (Harriette Cole) What I loved the most about working with Michael Jackson is how kind he was to everyone. He was gracious to the elevator operator, the guard and the executives in the museum. He made sure to thank each person who was in ear shot when the shoot was over. He was generous and kind. Did some people feel intimidated by him? I don’t know if that’s the right word. More, I think some people were mesmerized. Some were pinching themselves wondering if they actually were in the presence of the King of Pop.

Q: Michael looks healthier and happier than he’s been in years (not just in the photo shoot but in paparazzi pictures even). In your time spent with Michael, did you get a sense that he really wants to make a comeback and reinvent the music industry again? The world is awaiting his next move, but I get the feeling he doesn’t even realize how much he is missed in the music scene. — Robert

A: (Harriette Cole) Michael certainly seemed healthy and happy–and more, content. He had a peace about him that was palpable. He seemed comfortable in his own skin. Never mind, he’s got the body that any woman or man would die for! At 49 years old, he’s got a slim dancer’s body, evidence of consistent, disciplined exercise. So, could he make a comeback? He certainly seems strong enough. We also know that he is actively in the studio creating. He told us that he travels with a tape recorder so that whenever he gets the inspiration to make music he can capture it for later reflection. He also noted that many artists today are not reaching inside to create their own unique music. He thinks it’s breakthrough time. That certainly could include a Michael Jackson breakthrough–or should I say another one!

Q: Tell us about BLANKET! That little mysterious baby! How did you find the little boy? Was he a well-behaved kid? How are both father and son to each other? Do you get a real sense of how Michael is as a father to his children from what you’ve seen so far? — Melissa in Manila, Philippines

A: (Harriette Cole) | We didn’t meet Michael’s two other children. His daughter, Paris, is 9 and he has another son, Michael Joseph, 10. Blanket was incredibly well-behaved while he was in our company, which is saying a lot for a 5-year-old. He is obviously very close to his dad. They walked into the fitting holding hands and only separated when both of them became at ease. Michael’s parenting skills were to be commended. Without many words, with very subtle gestures he offered discipline, guidance and support. Michael also obviously wants Blanket to learn good manners, so when the Ebony team came into the room for the interview, Michael coached Blanket on the proper way to shake hands and say hello. Small things, but isn’t it the small things that show the measure of one’s true self?

Q: Are there plans for another Ebony/Jet/Michael Jackson collaboration in the near future? — Jamison

A. (Bryan Monroe) | As they say, “stay tuned.” We are planning one more cover, this time on our sister publication, Jet magazine, to come out in mid-December. It is a weekly magazine, so keep an eye out for it on your newsstand. We may even have some breaking news in it, too!

August 28, 2008 : Good Morning America

Aug. 28, 2008 — — He first became a star as a young boy, then endured superstardom, scandals and a legal prosecution, but as he turns 50, Michael Jackson told “Good Morning America” in an exclusive interview that he’s “having a wonderful time, just relaxing.”

Speaking by phone from his home in California, at times so softly he was barely audible, Jackson said he was listening to James Brown and preparing for his 50th birthday Friday, when he will “just have a little cake with my children and we’ll probably watch some cartoons” — before he gets right back to work.

Does turning 50 mean he now has an AARP card?

“Not that I know of!” Jackson said, laughing.

He said he still can do all his famous dance moves and “more.”

“I feel very wise and sage, but at the same time very young,” he said.

Reflecting back, Jackson said the happiest time in his life was probably when he was recording his hit solo albums “Thriller,” released in 1982, and “Off the Wall,” released in 1979. Those albums — which were accompanied by a string of hit singles and videos and corresponded with the 1983 debut of his signature dance, the “moonwalk” — propelled him to the height of his stardom.

“That meant very much to me and seemed to be received so beautifully by the public and the world,” he said. “I enjoyed it very much.”

Asked to pick a single song as his greatest achievement, Jackson went back to the same period.

“Oh boy, that’s a hard one,” he said, before singling out “We Are the World,” “Billie Jean” and “Thriller.”

But Jackson was not content to rest on his laurels, saying, “I am still looking forward to doing a lot of great things.”

He hopes to release new music and tour, though he doesn’t have dates set.

“I am writing all the time,” he said. “I love composing and the whole thing. But I am also raising my children and enjoying it and teaching them to ride bicycles and how to read. I love it.”

RECORDING DATE

I Have This Dream (1st demo/1999) : Written by Michael Jackson, David Foster and Carol Bayer Sager and recorded in April 1999 during the Invincible sessions. In November 1999, to celebrate Thriller as the best video ever, Michael graces the cover of TV Guide (issue dated December 4, 1999) with an exclusive photoshoot + an interview given recently in a New York hotel. In the interview Michael talks about his new album : “I have a couple of things planned. I think it’s going to be totally different from what I did before. There’s a song on the new album called “I Have This Dream.” It’s a millennium song about the world and the environment that I cowrote with Carole Bayer Sager and David Foster.” Remains unreleased.

I Have This Dream (2nd demo/2002) : The song was repurposed in 2002 into the topic of a contest held by AOL Instant Messenger. The contest members would write lyrics for the song, and the King of Pop would later record whichever would win. On August 29, 2002, a writer named Ric Kipp eventually won the whole contest. The 1999 instrumental provided for a 2002 contest held by AOL Instant Messenger and Tonos Entertainment leaked online on April 16, 2010. Remains unreleased.

I Have This Dream (3rd demo/2004-2006) : MJ worked on the song with John Barnes at Neverland in 2004. and the song became a charity single after Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and was co-written with Abdullah bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the second son of Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the king of Bahrain. Singers James Ingram, Ciara, Snoop Dogg, the O’Jays, R Kelly and Shirley Caesar recorded vocals in Los Angeles. In October 2005, Michael recorded parts with a orchestra in Metropolis Studios in Chiswick, London, but never completed his vocals and did not attend further sessions. John Barnes came to Bahrain in 2005/2006 to work on the song. Abdulla said he had spent $2.2m on “I Have This Dream” and cited it, among other songs, in his lawsuit against Jackson in 2008. The parties settled out of court. Played during a court hearing in London in 2008. 2 Seas Records initially announced the track as “From the Bottom of My Heart”. This title was later reused for a completely different track Jackson worked on a couple years later. Remains unreleased.

I Have This Dream (4th demo/2008) : Although there isn’t much info on this version’s production, Jackson tinkered with “I Have This Dream” in 2008 for the final time, now with Grammy Award nominated record producer K-R.O.K.
