I Have This Dream (1st demo/1999) : Written by Michael Jackson, David Foster and Carol Bayer Sager and recorded in April 1999 during the Invincible sessions. In November 1999, to celebrate Thriller as the best video ever, Michael graces the cover of TV Guide (issue dated December 4, 1999) with an exclusive photoshoot + an interview given recently in a New York hotel. In the interview Michael talks about his new album : “I have a couple of things planned. I think it’s going to be totally different from what I did before. There’s a song on the new album called “I Have This Dream.” It’s a millennium song about the world and the environment that I cowrote with Carole Bayer Sager and David Foster.” Remains unreleased.
I Have This Dream (2nd demo/2002) : The song was repurposed in 2002 into the topic of a contest held by AOL Instant Messenger. The contest members would write lyrics for the song, and the King of Pop would later record whichever would win. On August 29, 2002, a writer named Ric Kipp eventually won the whole contest. The 1999 instrumental provided for a 2002 contest held by AOL Instant Messenger and Tonos Entertainment leaked online on April 16, 2010. Remains unreleased.
I Have This Dream (3rd demo/2004-2006) : MJ worked on the song with John Barnes at Neverland in 2004. and the song became a charity single after Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and was co-written with Abdullah bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the second son of Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the king of Bahrain. Singers James Ingram, Ciara, Snoop Dogg, the O’Jays, R Kelly and Shirley Caesar recorded vocals in Los Angeles. In October 2005, Michael recorded parts with a orchestra in Metropolis Studios in Chiswick, London, but never completed his vocals and did not attend further sessions. John Barnes came to Bahrain in 2005/2006 to work on the song. Abdulla said he had spent $2.2m on “I Have This Dream” and cited it, among other songs, in his lawsuit against Jackson in 2008. The parties settled out of court. Played during a court hearing in London in 2008. 2 Seas Records initially announced the track as “From the Bottom of My Heart”. This title was later reused for a completely different track Jackson worked on a couple years later. Remains unreleased.
I Have This Dream (4th demo/2008) : Although there isn’t much info on this version’s production, Jackson tinkered with “I Have This Dream” in 2008 for the final time, now with Grammy Award nominated record producer K-R.O.K.
