January 31 : The Jackson 5 return to Gary for the first time to play two benefits concerts for for Mayor Richard Hatcher’s re-election campaign at Westside High School and they receive the key to the city. A ceremony is held outside their former home on 2300 Jackson Street which is renamed Jackson 5 Boulevard for the day. A sign is places on the lawn in front of the house : Welcome home Jackson 5, keepers of the dream. The event is filmed for a TV Special.
March 16 : Motown releases J5’s new single, “Never Can Say Goodbye” (it peaks at number 2 on the Hot 100 Billboard).
The Jackson 5 attend the Grammy Award Ceremony where ABC wins an award for Best Pop Song. The Grammy Awards posthumously honore Reverend King’s 1967 speech, “Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam”, as the Best Spoken Word Recording (it had been released during 1970). The Jackson 5 travele to Atlanta to present the award to the pastor’s widow, Correta Scott King.

May 5 : The Jackson family moves into a new house that they just purchased for 250 000 dollars at 4641 Hayvenhurst avenue in Encino, California. They call their new home Hayvenhurst. They share 6 rooms : Katherine/Joe, Jackie/Ronny Rancifer, Tito/Johnny Jackson, Jermaine/Marlon, Michael/Randy, LaToya/Janet) + a guest room for Jack Richardson (the group road manager since 1968).
Rebbie gives birth to a baby girl named Stacee Brown.

For his 5th grade, Michael joins Emerson Junior High, where his brothers are already enrolled. They only spend a few months at Emerson before receiving death threats, and Joseph decides to no longer send his sons to public schools. Michael and his brothers attend the Walton School in Panorama City. At this new school, Tito becomes friend with David Gest and introduces him to Michael. He and David become lifelong friends.

September 16 : “Goin’ Back To Indiana”, the Jackson 5 first TV Special is aired on ABC. The special includes the group performing their hits, acting in skits with guest Bill Cosby and the Smothers Brothers and footage of the celebration filmed in their hometown of Gary back in January.
September 24 : The Jackson 5 are on the cover of Life magazine with Katherine & Joe. The photoshoot took place at Hayvenhurst and feaatures Rebbie, LaToya & 5 years old Janet.

The Jackson 5 attend the NAACP Image Awards at the Hollywood Palladium, Hollywood. They are presetend with an award for Best Singing Group Of The Year.
November 23 : The single “Sugar Daddy” is released by Motown (number 10 on the Hot 100 Billboard).
December 9 : Motown releases the first greatest hits of the Jackson 5.
December : The Jackson 5 are on the cover of Right On!
December 23 : The Jackson 5 are dressed up as Santas with Mary Wilson and give out Christmas presents to underprivileged children at a Motown Christmas Party at the Pacific Town Club in Los Angeles.
December 24 : The Jackson 5 give a 45-minute charity concert at the Foundation for the Junior Blind in Los Angeles, in support of 1000 visually impaired children, of whom 400 attended the party after the show. The concert included, for the first time, some of the group’s Christmas songs. Following this event, Michael Jackson stated, “You know, that’s what Christmas really is… it’s giving.”
